Only played SH2 before this. I would rate this game EXTREMELY high as a horror game. Only negatives are the visuals being poor enough that it's sometimes easy to miss vital items occasionally (watch your characters head move towards items for clues) and the controls and camera are frustrating. I.e. they don't enhance the hooror, they're sometimes just plain annoying. However, the story, themes and setting more than make up for this. Fantastic game.
Poor level design. Hit boxes are a joke. Visuals are too 'busy' to keep up (not just combat, but in general. Game overstays it's welcome by a long way. However, the moment to moment combat is a lot of fun. If you fall into it, you'll love it. But for me, it's too much. No need to be open world and dozens of weapons and upgrades. So... fun, but too much.
Tag to include would be 'platformer'. No thanks, not what I signed up for. The FPS elements are good, but not great. The creativity and worldbuilding is a highlight, so too the soundtrack. But it starts out as a Hexen like (sort of) FPS and slowly descends into frustrating platforming. Level design is sometimes not intuitive. I gave up after getting a fair way through. Essentially, it was a chore.
If you have accessibility issues like me and you NEED to be able to turn a game down - difficulty wise- then this game is NOT for you. Shame, it's pretty good, interesting setting and mechanics, but I can't get through it. If you're used to this type of game, you should be ok.
