Riven

Love the Myst series of games

I've been playing the Myst series of games ever since they first came out years ago. I love puzzle games, and this one gives you plenty to do. The visuals and game play of this updated version of Riven are great. I've been playing for over 4 hours and still have a long ways to go before completing the game. Compared to the original version of Riven, this version is far superior.

Stellaris

I'm liking it

Been playing this for a few hours now. I'm not a expert at this type of strategy game by any means, but the tutorials are making the learning curve a bit easier to endure. So far I'm having fun learning how the game mechanics work and exploring new worlds. There is a lot of detail and some decent story line elements to this game that make it engaging. I should also mention that I've purchased several of the DLC's, so your take on this may vary depending on which DLC's you have installed. Some of the DLC's add a lot to the game (some good, some not so good). I did some research into the game and the various DLC's before buying this, so you may want to do that too. Overall, though, I'm having a great time.

ENDLESS™ Space 2

Game is promising, but...

I arraived at my first interstellar battle with the battle screen displaying "Loading..." at the bottom, and that's where it sat. I ended up terminating the program after sitting and waiting for several minutes. So disappointing! The rest of the game up to that point was interesting and fun to play. I guess I'll have to try again and see if my next battle freezes or not. I'm playing this on a Dell Alienware gaming laptop with 32GB RAM and NVIDIA RTX 3080 GPU, so my laptop should have ample resources for this game to work correctly.

Fallout 4 - High Resolution Texture Pack

Are the graphics really enhanced?

If you compare the screenshots that GOG has for the base game to the screenshots for the DLC, they look absolutely identical. That suggests one of three things to me: 1. They used screenshots from the new DLC on the store page for the base game. (not very likely) 2. They were lazy and just reused the screenshots of the base game when they set up the store page for the DLC. (more likely) 3. There truly is no difference between the graphics in the base game and the graphics in the DLC. In which case, why does it add over 50GB of files to the game??? I'm hoping option 2 is the correct one. If it is, they should update the sample screenshots on the DLC store page so that we can see the differences before bothering to add 50GB of (possibly useless) files to our systems. By the way, I'm basing this entirely on what I see on the store pages. I don't own either the base game or the DLC (although I'm considering buying the base game).

Trap Shrine

Not what I expected

I didn't realize that this was a "male-on-male" novel where the "female" characters are actually male cross-dressers. Not my type of visual novel at all!! It has been uninstalled and will never see the light of day on my laptop again. I guess I'll be more careful next time. (If I could have given it a negative star raiting I would.)

Silence

Great point-and-click graphic novel

I bought this game a couple days ago in spite of the negative reviews, and I'm glad I did. The story drew me in and I felt like I really got to know the characters and could sympathize with their different outlooks on life. The artwork in the game is very polished and a joy to look at. I finished the game after about seven and a half hours of play. The only down side I can think of is that some of the tasks that have to be performed to progress in the story aren't always easy to figure out. I had to refer to a walkthru to get past one particular point in the story, but that was the only time. The rest of it I was able to figure out without any help. If you can persevere through to the end I believe it will be well worth the time spent. At least I thought so. If point-and-click games aren't your thing, then maybe you'll disagree with me. But if you're anything like me and enjoy a good story, this game is a good buy for the money. I got the game on sale and feel I got a great deal for my money.

Baldur's Gate Enhanced Edition Official Soundtrack

Not entirely happy

The music was great (especially the FLAC format) but the marketing is a bit deceptive. Maybe I was just being naive, but when it says "to play this item you also need Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition" I just assumed that maybe it would upgrade the in-game music sound track. However, it doesn't appear to do that at all. (I guess my first clue should have been the fact that there are no FLAC or MP3 files in the BG:EE game directory to begin with.) So all this download is good for, as far as I can see, is for playing the BG music on an MP3 player or something similar. It doesn't appear to add anything to the game itself. So I'm not sure why the description on GOG's website says you need BG:EE in order to play this. You do not. If you just want the music to play on your own outside of the game, then by all means get this. It souds great. But if you are looking for an enhanced music experience in game, this is not going to do that. I guess I'm not going to bother buying the soundtrack for BG2:EE after finding this out. Oh well, live and learn.

Baldur's Gate: Enhanced Edition

Great makeover of a great classic

I hesitated on buying the enhanced edition of Baldur's Gate for some time because of the number of vehement negative reviews. However, there were also many good reviews, and so I finally decided to give it a try while it was on sale. I can tell you, I was not disappointed! This is more than just the original game with some mods built into it. I own the original (with the mods) and I feel that BG1:EE is a much better experience. First of all, the revamped full scrren support for high resolution monitors in my opion beats the full screen mod of the original game. The graphics have been polished up a bit and look great. The few changes to the user interface are nice. I haven't run into any issues after playing for several hours. The one feature I particularly like is the option to change the font size. The equivalent mod in the original game was a bit clunky, and when I had the font large enough to read on my high def scrren, it didn't fit too well in the dialog box, and didn't look all the great. In the enhanced edition, you have moch more control of the font size directly from the options screen, and the larger font size is formatted perfectly in the dialog box. I have no regrets in purchasing BG1:EE. If anyone else is hesitating because of all the bad reviews, you might want to consider giving it a try, especially while it is still on sale. (I also bought BG2:EE and PST:EE while I was at it. Love them all!)
