Dying Light: The Following – Enhanced Edition

Annoying light

Parkour survival, that's it, the game has potential, but doesn't live up to what I expected, you 'll never live the power fantasy of mowing down hordes of enemies, even the most basic zombies can overwhelm you if you stay in one place, and they have the ability to zero in on your location even if you are using a cloak potion ofr camouflage, weapons break too often and ammo capacity is barely enough, the story ois nothing to write home about, you are just some dude that does whatever other people tell you like a good puppy, every time the game wants to increase the ifficulty it gives you vaseline vision and slows you down, and to top it all when it comes to boss battles the game takes away your cool gear and leaves you with a piss poor weapon (god forbid the player actually has fun) and the last boss is a QTE sequence,. And is bloated to hell and back, so many challenges and side quests that are not needed to finish the game, but a few grant you some items that are lifesavers for the main campaign (Zaid's flares and cloak potions), problem is, you won't know which of these quests are worth your time. And don't even bother with "quarantine zones" that serve as minidungeons but are an absolute waste of time. As for the DLC, only Hellraid is really interesting, creating a whole new minigame that is set on dark fantasy I started "the following", but quickly abandoned it adter they gave me a car that also requires maintenance Overall, the game has some cool ideas and mechanics, but it's commitment to being annoying at the best of times drags it down

Dicey Dungeons

The odds are against you

ever seen an enemy roll 2 6s on a row? yeah, not fun at all, as is usual with RNG games, the game is rigged against you, so why bother?

What a banger

Action adventure 2D platforming with RPG elements, you could say is a mix of Castlevania with Shadowrun,, maps are small, your arsenal is limited and your fists are your most trusted weapon, , but don't let the small scale deceive you, the game is very well crafted, the zones are packed full with secrets to find and characters to meet, and your interactions can have varying degrees of results on sidequests, there's a hacking minigame that is literally that, you hack into thinks and traverse the "cyberspace" gathering intel and resources while fighting security systems with twin stick shooting mechanics, these sections are rarely hard, and they all serve a mission purpose, if the game just wants you to read flavor text you won't have to suffer through a minigame like in Deus ex. The art style is gorgeos and the music doesn't lag behind, with really nice voice acting, Overall the game is fantastic, only encountered a bug and it solved by reloading a previous save file. can't recommend it hard enough to fans of the genre.

Deep Sky Derelicts

The idea is solid, but

Dungeon crawler and turn based combat rpg that uses cards as attacks and skills, the idea is to manage your energy and health to last as much as possible before you have to retreat to lick your wounds, The dungeon crawling is minimalistic since you move in a minimap until you find a point of interest, the combat van get challenging with a myriad of buffs and debuffs so you better pack a wide variety of skills, but it also can get repetitive. The presentation shines with 2d art with strong lines, but lacks contrast, with predominantly neutral and dark colors, the music is very nice and helps to easy the repetitiveness of the game. I was enjoying the game until I found out the character level cap is 10 and you cannot gain any more skill points; with 10 profession skills + 6 specialization skills that can go up to level 3, the game will leave you starved for skill points, and if you don't know this before playing you can get a pretty screwed up character with no respec option. I'm not the kind of man that replays a game, let alone a game that leaves you with a feeling of unfillment. I also found a couple of bugs and a crash on launch So yeah, I can see the greatness of the game, but the repetitiveness and the half baked characters will leave you wishing for a better version of the game.

Daymare: 1998

Better than expected

I played in 1990s mode normal difficulty since I belive that's the way devs intended most people to play the game. The game plays like RE4 or TEW, movement speed and changing weapons is slow, shooting is precise, and damage is inconsistent, sometimes a zombie needs a bullet to the head to die, sometimes it takes 4, the game really rewards you for taking your time and aiming carefully (except in boss fights), specially because opening you inventory/map/archives doesn't pause the game, this issue is exacerbated by probably the most controversial feature of the game: ammo magazines, this means you can preload up to 2 magazines (per weapon) of ammo to quickly realod in the middle of a fight, and if you run out of ammo (usually in boss fights) you will be screwed, can't blame new players turning down the game because of this as the first 2 guns you get use magazines, but if you stick with it long enough you'll find out shotguns and the magnun revolver don't suffer from this limitation. The most glaring issue with the game is the boss fights as the game does a poor job to communicate your objective, the worst is the second time you face chapter 5's boss, this time is chasing you down a corridor and you are supposed to lure it all the way to the end, stun it with an explosion and backtrack to repeat the process while you wait around for an elevator, this fight is very tricky because the window of opportunity to stun it is small, and if you fail a stun you'll get one shoted, I tried for an hour, always missing a stun at some póint and dying miserably, at some point the boss was stunned and still killed me as I tried to run past it, that kind of bs broke my sanity. Overall, the game is not bad, it runs well, and is remarkably bug free (in the fountain puzzle look at the engravings on the discs, not the subtitles, they don't match) but it could definetively use some improvements, more safe rooms, maybe a slightly larger inventory and a full rework of boss fights

Children of Zodiarcs

An interesting take on tactical comabt

TActical RPG with a heavy dose of RNG, The fame setting is some kind of anachronistic dustopia with fututirstic tech sprinkled in a preindustrial era, maybe, we never see the world at large so we can only assume. The story is not remarkable, mostly beacuse it feels like the story missions are just the first arch in the classical hero's journey, and the characters are not likable, sometimes annoyingly aggresive / if you are fighting alongside someone to save your lifes the very least you could do is show some respect). The presentation is nice, the art style doies a good job on depicting the slums and the music is fitting for the setting. The real powerhouse of the game is the combat, good old tacticcal combat , but your available skills are determinesd by cards you can equip, and each attack has a dice roll too that can modify the various effects of the cards, as you progress in levels you get fixed strat increments with card level ups and additional dice to roll, the system is good , but it suffers from randomitis, yuo can reroll some dice and is very of ten your rerolls land on the same side it already was (more like 3/4 instead of 1/6).. The game also requires a fair amount of grind, you may think autoleveling mobs tto your lñevel would be a good thing to not be underleveled, but for boss fights you wanna be outleveling the characters, because 9 vs 3 is not gonna end well when RBG is the driving force behind the combat. Overall, the game has interesting combat systems, with some bs baked in, but nothing that wwill frustrate you much , and you will probably find the half baked story and unlikable characters to be the worst parts of the game. I'd gladly welcome a second entry tto continue the story, open the world to include new vista and give the characters some actual development.

Chaos Reborn

I ran out of turns on the tutorial

I'm not the best tactical game player and that's why I like to take it slowly to make sure I got my units well positioned, specially since the summoner is pretty squishy and apparently enemies can summon uniits like the zerg, imagine my suprise when I ran out of turns during the second tutorial mission, which is a shame, definetively not for me.

Blasphemous

Absolute banger

Metroidvania meets soulslikes in a cathiolic fever dream, the pixel art is gorgeous with a heallthy dose of body horror, the music is a treat, you can really feel the spanish influence, the combat is fluid, fast paced and punishing (Isidora spanked me so much I fell in love with her), 90% of the boss design is amazing, I only found a few bugs related to movement impairment , but they could resolved by changing screens, and my only true criticism is the fact there are nio manual saves, I missed on the true ending by just killing the next to last boss before getting the final heart of the sword , and that sucks.

Apotheon

outstanding

Apotheon uses the tested for mula of metroidvanias and brings its own flavour, the art is striking and strong, although sometimes it might feel to uniform, the sound effects are crisp and the music is fitting with and epic journey, but where it shines the most is in its combat, there is a wide range of melee, ranged and ranged weapons , some more useful than others but you can get creative with your arsenal, the only downside is that there are too many weapons, scrolling through 15 slots to use the one you want is annoying at best, you can choose not to pick up a weapon to reduce this, but it doesn't work well all the time (oyu0ll be picking useless weapons while trying to pick up a really useful one. Overall, great game, tons of fun.

Alwa's Awakening

Better than expected

Baby metroidvania is better than it looks, don't let the retro aestethic fool you, this game is tough, and not so much on account of the enemies, but the platforming, as you progress through the game you unlock 3 spell that are almost exclusively tools to traverse the world and find its secrets, you will be using those spells in tandem to best the most tricky challenges and to top it allrun the majority of the game with only 3 hit points, if you lose them or get hit by an instakill trap you go back to the last checkpoint you activated, this is pretty punishing, specially in the last dungeon, this game gave me a run for my money and finished adn finished dying a little shy from 250 times, and honestly,, I had to activate quick respawn in the last dungeon because I couldn't handle it, one of the rooms took me like 20 attempts.
