ATOM RPG: Trudograd

Content locked behind dlc

The first game did it as well but not to this extend, but some good equipment is being locked behind "supporter" dlc, which is just another terrible trend in the gaming industry. Don't support this behaviour. One of the dlc outfits raises your persuation / barter skills, which are generally hard to raise since not many items buff these stats. Eurojank.

People have the wrong mindset.

Yes, the game takes inspiration from the Dooma, Wolf3Ds and other 90s fpa. Just because the hud looks Doom inspired doesn't mean that the game plays like Doom. The game was never meant to be just another Doom boomer fps, the developers always explained why the game has a low ammunition count and what their design principles are. Players should think of this game as a Hotline Miami in first person instead. You have to manage your limited resources in a world where precision and evasion are key. Also, finding at least a few secrets per level makes you able to play more gun heavy and I always had more ammo than needed and couldn't even pick up additional ammo. The game became really fun and engaging once I got the Doom mentality out of my head. I suggest you do the same and see the game as its own beast that doesn't need Doom and Duke to survive and be a great game!

Maid of Sker

Buyer beware...

This game is a solid horror title, easily a 3.5 - 4 stars, but the game has been abandoned on GOG. This is one of those titles without achievements and, more importantly, without any of the updates that the Steam and console versions have received. GOG's version is still 1.0, the release version. GOG should update their terms of service to prevent developers from scamming and abandoning GOG versions. This would also benefit CD Project. Being treated as a second class customer doesn't motivate me to buy products on this platform.

Cyberpunk 2077

2020 strikes again.

So don't expect a functional product. Wasteland 3, Baldur's original sin 3 and now CP2077. I quit the rpg genre because of these broken games and false promises. The hardware requirements are false advertising as well. Only rtx 30 series user have a somewhat pleasant experience. The game itself is just another derivative of Ubisoft's open-world formula for the casual masses. Refunded a request and will not buy any CDPR products in the future. I did not like the Witcher games anyways. They have already sold out to investors and it is just a matter of time until they become the next Ubisoft, Activision or EA. They are already eager to force you into using the Galaxy client for in-game rewards.

Gordian Quest

The game seems to be broken (?)

You know how the cards you hover over are pulled out of the deck a bit? When I hover over a card, it rapidly pulls them out and back into the deck which makes playing a card impossible. And if I am able to play or discard a card then the other cards will be pulled down which also makes picking them impossible. I didn't have this problem on Steam. I refunded it there because I saw that the game is also available on GOG. Requested a refund until the game leaves early access. The potential is there. But the execution? Not so much, yet.

Prodeus

For those who don't like long reviews...

This is the game for people who didn't like Doom's new direction. And it is available on GOG. Prodeus is basically the real Doom 3, or Doom mixed with the Brutal Doom mod. And it has a platform independent level editor, so people from every platform can play and upload new maps. The biggest issue is the performance. I was one of the playtesters and we submitted quite a few reports about the performance, so it's sad to see that it has made it into the early access launch. I hope that they'll be able to quickly fix it. People who are turned off from a bad launch rarely come back, which would hurt the game. Everything else is *chef kiss I'd give it 4 stars because of the performance, but I'll keep it at 5 in hope of a future performance update.

Othercide

Just my 2 cents

Since some reviews here are catastrophic. Yes, this game is very hard and punishing, but that's part of the genre. If you think that Xcom has "unfair" rng and you don't know about probability calculation, then you won't enjoy this game. Xcom's rng is in the favour of the player already. So, Othercide, it's a good game, maybe 10$ more than it should be. The game can be more repetitive than said other game or similar games in the genre. There are also roguelite aspects to this game, e.g. dying over and over again until you have accumulated enough status boosts to create and revive the units with stronger starting power. The problem with this mechanic is that the game simply doesn't have enough different maps and situations. You'll see the same few maps with similar layouts over and over again. The devs should add more randomization to the maps to remove some of the repetition. If you are still interested and reading: My main reason to write this review even though I own it on console is that certain reviews state that this game doesn't reward skill and that it's rng dependent, which isn't true. This game removes the hit percentages on skills in favour of hp costs and longer wait times. This means that you can't just click on the strongest skill in your arsenal and hope to hit. You will hit but you will lose HP. That's one of the twists in this game. The other twist is that you can (and should / must) create combos with your units and skills since the game is based on a time bar that shows who can act next. Think of Final Fantasy 6, 7, 8, 9. These combos (and high skill usage) can set you and / or the enemies back on the timeline and force you to wait longer until it's your turn again. That's where the "skill" lies. You can create combos through skill usage and positioning and some of these combos can instantly defeat everyone, including the hard bosses. One good setup and you can trigger one combo after the other. Give it a try!

Chernobylite

Buyer beware

The game is based on timed missions. You have 30 minutes to finish them. A deal breaker, there is enough stress and pressure in the real world. The rest of the game really has potential.

Age of Wonders: Planetfall

A great game with only a few drawbacks.

I am having quite some fun with Planetfall and I am not even a big 4x gamer, mostly rpg, tbs and fps, I think that speaks for the game's qualities. I think the setting, art style, music and character designs are well done and compared to many modern games finally very "gamey" again, means we have a colourful and unrealistic setting with dinosaurs with lasers instead of bleak grey environments with current or past gen weaponry and technology, proper sci-fi so to say. My problem as a non 4x veteran is the UI which feels cluttered and unnecessarily complicated, but then, other 4x are like this too or worse. Diplomacy is a bit flawed as well, the A.I changes its opinion on the fly and it might be possible to be attacked right after signing a peace treaty. And again, I read that many strategy games struggle with the diplomacy part. The AoW series caught my interest because of the mix between 4x and turn based strategy. I love the old and new Xcom series and tbs in general, so battles in this game are great fun to me. It works almost exactly like it does in X-com which helps players who have played this type of strategy games. I would say the game is well worth checking out. Give it a try even if you are not a 4X gamer, it is not as dry as Crusader Kings or other Paradox products. Oh, the store page did not list it but the game supports gamepads. No achievements on GOG though.

The Bureau: XCOM® Declassified™

People are a bit harsh...

Reading through reviews I was thinking that this game must be really bad and clunky. It is not. The wall hug mechanic is a bit out of date but manageable, still my biggest con. Other than that it is your typical 3rd person shooter from that era, or more from the end of that era, that delivers a good but cheesy alien story with cover based shooting, squad commands and a lot of flanking. A bit short though, played through the Steam version within 6-8 hours. A great part of the downvotes were old Xcom fans who expected another turn based strategy game, which we got after this game, so grab this game when it is on sale and have some cheesy b-movie fun for a weekend!
