Radiolaria: Might there be something wrong with the cloud saves? I guess there is no way for you to know if you haven't had a similar problem!

ZyloxDragon: That is weird. I haven't imported a character thru the GOG versions of the game, but I do remember having an export character not having the .sav extension in one of the games. Was never sure if I just mistyped it, or if the export didn't add it.

With most microsoft file systems, If you use c: rather than c:\ it will whatever the current working directory is. Try exporting again as c:\glory3.sav, maybe that's what's happening?
Thanks! I tried that too now, but still no joy I'm afraid. The game claims I've created the .sav file for exporting the character, but it just can't be found (I've tried searching all of c: for it + the game directory). Really odd!

Will settle for exporting the QFG2 character -- he's also a Paladin, at least :-)

I wonder if it got virtualized, either in %LOCALAPPDATA%\VirtualStore or on C.

I'd also try naming the savegame something unique, then running a file search.

Thanks! I tried different savegave names and the file search without success. What do you mean by it becoming virtualized? I've never heard of that :-)

Starting in Windows Vista, and as far as I know continuing in all subsequent Windows (Windows 7, Windows 8, Windows 8.1, Windows 10), certain filesystem paths have special rules. Prior to Windows Vista, it was common practice for everyone to run everything as Administrator, so many programs developed the bad habit of writing their user-specific data (like your save games, or your exported characters) to paths that they should not have used, such as C:\Windows or the game's install directory. When Windows Vista made it much harder to run programs as Administrator, these programs would have been unable to save their data to the Administrator-only paths. Microsoft knew they had no hope of getting all the relevant programs to be updated to write to user-specific paths ("C:\Users\Me\My Documents\My Games\<game name>"), due both to the number of affected games and that some of those games had been abandoned by their creators, who may in turn have gone out of business. This gave Microsoft three choices:
- Do nothing. Blame the games. Insist that games be updated or abandoned. Users would not take this well.
- Do nothing. Tell users to run everything as Administrator, like they had always done before. This would work, but contradicted Microsoft's goal of having uses run things as Administrator only for a good reason related to actually administering the system, like installing a program.
- Find a way to let the games keep working, without giving them Administrator. Microsoft went this route, and the specific way they picked was that, if a non-Administrator program writes to one of these specially picked paths, the system claims to do what was requested, but silently redirects the write to a different path that the user can actually access. Attempts to read back the data are likewise redirected, so from the game's perspective, it looks like the files were put in the install directory, just like they always had been. However, when you run Windows Explorer, the system sees that Explorer is exempt from filesystem virtualization, so you only see things in the install path that are actually there. You don't see the files that were redirected. For those, you need to go look in the Virtual Store where they were sent. That's why MarkusRamikin suggested that path, and suggested trying Windows' file search feature.

Thanks for taking the time to explain. That does make sense, but unfortunately I'm still unable to find the relevant savegames even after running several file searches in Explorer. The searches found other .sav files, but not the QFG3 ones. I know something must have gone wrong somewhere, but I'm not sure what.

Anyway, I'm replaying QFG4 with my Shapeir hero now! :-)
Okay. I believe the problem I have is an old one - I cannot import my character from Shadows of Darkness to Dragon Fire, because it says the file is "too long". I seem to remember it has something to do with the character's stats being too high. Can anyone let me know what stats would be low enough for Dragon Fire to import the hero, and if there's a working exported character editor to fix this?

EDIT: nevermind, I found the character editor that fixes the error. The saga continues.

Thanks for bearing with me - I posted this as its own topic but then realized it belonged here .... and I don't know how to delete it. I'm hoping to get some responses.

QFG3 is not recognizing my paladin status. I am importing the correct file - I even replayed the end of QFG2 to be sure I was promoted (I was) and saved a new import file with an easier, more obvious name, just to be sure.

Upon import, it says I have been successful .... then that I have been recognized as a fighter and if that's not correct I can choose a different class. However, I am certain that is going to affect gameplay - that I'll be "going for" paladin instead of already being one.

This is the first time I have played as anything other than a thief, so I cannot be sure of that. There is, apparently, a paladin import bug, and have been directed to a variety of patches, which I have attempted to apply. None of them solved the problem. I don't know if that is because they don't....or (more likely) I am not applying the patches correctly.

I've also tried adding the patches - including the fan-made one, but either that doesn't solve the problem OR I am not adding those files correctly. The patches included those at [http://www.sierrahelp.com/Patches-Updates/Patches-Updates-Games/QuestForGloryUpdates.html?fbclid=IwAR3J0BTKyaU5fdPSS9t7VBGLgCXIhDicOK8W8VhDlSY1_KBW6g3lx2dq-M0] and the other was the fan-created patch mentioned elsewhere in this forum. https://www.gog.com/forum/quest_for_glory_series/qfg3_unofficial_patch_12a/page1

I'd really like to dig into this game, but I am totally stuck.

Just click Paladin. This series can easily mess up export files (your Experience points are a common culprit, particularly going into Dragon Fire) and that's why you're allowed to correct the game's assumption on your class. The latest fan patch fixes any bugs that come from this system (and none of them are related to your problem anyway)

So stop overthinking it and just click Paladin.
I just finished playing QFG1 VGA and did the whole save import file with the C:glory1.sav but cant find the file anywhere, Ive read many topics on forums for help but nothing seems to work. I just cant find the file, obviously if I can find the file, I'd be good to go. I really want to import My character for all 5 games.

How did you play the game? Did you play it on a PC or Mac? Did you play it using GOG Galaxy or using ScummVM? Any additional information that you can provide that would help us to help you find the file?
Hey guys look here.
