Calik: Have you tried this step from the first post?

If the remake claims that your file "is not a proper QFG1 Save", open that file with WinRAR or equivalent and extract the file contained within, adding to it the .sav extension. The file should then be recognizes. Thank to jimmi.s.hansen for this.

It might be the same error.
I tried WinRar and 7Zip, but neither could find anything inside my .sav file. I don't know if it matters, but they couldn't find anything in the Paladin one either.

Also, the Paladin file imports fine, so it's clearly something to do with my file.
You could try some of these programs;

Hi everyone. I have a problem. Because I like to install Games on a different partition then the OS, my Quest for Glory Folder is on the G:\ drive. This means that all of the ways how to import your character from the first post are invalid. The files do not exist anywhere on the system. Furthermore the character editors all don't work anymore, because it's 64 bit OS (Win 7) and I get an error. Compatibility mode doesn't help either for those Char creators.
I would like to import my character from the first game, though. Ideas?

Assuming you've exported the file as "C:\glory1.sav", the file should be in the game's directory, since it's not a UAC controlled folder. If you've installed the game in
"G:\Games\Quest for Glory Pack\" then the file should be "G:\Games\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 1\EGA\glory1.sav" for the original, or "G:\Games\Quest for Glory Pack\Quest for Glory 1\VGA\glory1.sav" for the VGA remake. The game's "C:\" always corresponds to the game's install folder.
Hi JMich and thanks for the reply. The file was unfortunately not in this folder. (Was the first place I looked before posting). I also tried to give it more unconventonial names and let the search function search for it.
In the end I gave up, uninstalled everything and reinstalled it on C:\ with the default path. That way I could retrieve the file. Obviously these instructions only work when installing it the default path on Win 7.

JMich: 4. I am using ScummVM to play the games, and I can't locate the exports at neither of the 2 above mentioned folders
I don't have that much experience with ScummVM so I'd like some confirmation or clarification for the following.
By default, ScummVM is mounting its own directory as "C:\", so if you export the character as "C:\glory1.sav" the file will be located at "C:\Program Files (x86)\ScummVM" or "C:\Users\<username>\AppData\Local\Program Files (x86)\ScummVM", depending on whether UAC is off or on. If the file is at the first location, then you should be able to import it without problems, if it's at the second one, copy it to either the game's directory or to ScummVM.
Verification of the above is needed
Close, but no cigar...

Quoted from ScummVM:
"Characters saved inside ScummVM are shown automatically. Chartacter files saved in the original interpreter need to be put inside ScummVM's saved games directory and a prefix needs to be added depending on which game it was saved in: 'qfg1-' for Quest for Glory 1, 'qfg2-' for Quest for Glory 2...[etc] Example: qfg2-thief.sav"

I don't know if characters created in ScummVM can be imported into the original interpreter, though, I'd need to do a bit of testing first.

I did try to make this FAQ as broad as possible, especially after the nth post about importing. As to why your file wasn't in the game's directory, I've truly no idea. Glad to see you got it working after all, and hope the rest of the games don't give you the same headaches.

Nice to see someone who can help with ScummVM, assuming you find the time, try to import a character, and I will update the FAQ as needed. And where exactly is the file saved? ScummVM\Saved Games or something else?

Sure thing. I mean, most people install default anyway and getting hundreds of questions, this is the best solution anyway. Maybe you want to add it, that this probably only works with that path. I don't think that the rest of the games will be such a problem now. Thanks again for your advice and time. :)
For any that's Not so Tech Savy, Just Hit the Window BUTTON.
2) RIght above it a little Search bar appears
3) In the search Bar type glory1
4) If it doesn't appear right away then click "see MORE RESULTS"
5) it will give five different places to search Click on MY COMPUTER and wait.
6) If its on your PC it WILL appear. When it does just drag it on your desktop then copy it into the directory that JMICH stated, If you using the remake it may be different than the GOG one

Worked great for me.

Thank you so much! By step two, I was rocking back into Trial by Fire, a game I haven't played since I was a kid. I always loved that this series allowed characters to be carried over into the sequels! Thanks again for the simple and easy to follow instructions. Cheers!

In the original game, you were not given a pool of 50 points to add if you imported. In the remake, you will be given a 25 point pool.

There are a bunch of other little tidbits about importing that are generally not considered for people who play normally, but I'll announce them as a list, anyway:

- Fighters will always start with a Broadsword, Shield, and Chainmail Armor, regardless of whether they didn't have them at the end of the last game.

- Magic Users (or any class with points in the Magic skill) will have all the spells they completed the last game with. If you didn't find/buy one or more of the following spells, they will be given to you at the beginning at entry level skill: Open, Trigger, Zap, Calm, Flame Dart, Detect, and Fetch.

- Thieves (or characters with points in Thief skills) will retain a Lock Pick if they finished the last game with it. If you didn't have a Thieves' Toolkit, they will get one for this adventure. The Thieves' Guild License can also be carried but serves no purpose in this game.

- All classes retain the same number of Daggers they finished the last game with. The only exception is for Magic Users or Thieves that ended the last game with zero Daggers, in which case they'll begin with one.

- If your character had Chainmail Armor, regardless of class, they will keep it. This is even true for Magic Users and Thieves.

- If your character had one or more potions of Undead Unguent when they finished the last game, they will carry those to this game.

- As for money, imported Heroes will have all their Silver Coins converted to Gold Coins (rounded down), and will have 140 Gold Coins added (in case you're wondering, that's 50 for rescuing Elsa, 30 for the Brigand Warlock, and 60 for the Brigand Leader, which you did at the end of the game all in one fell
swoop).

- Regardless of anything else, all Heroes will start with five Food Rations and a Full Waterskin.

SPECIAL NOTES ON MONEY TRANSFER:

If you play the QfG1 EGA version: Both your golds and silvers are imported into QfG2, either the EGA original or the VGA remake. Thus, if you defeat Baba Yaga with 100 gold and 100 silver, you will gain then equivalent of 140 gold for the offered rewards for "defeating" both the Brigand Warlock and Leader, as well as returning Elsa to her father. This means you will start either version of QfG2 with 250 gold coins.

However, if you play the QfG1 VGA version and import your character into the QfG2 VGA remake: GOLD DOES NOT COUNT. At all. If you have 10,000 golds from exploiting the mushroom glitch and no silvers, you will start QfG2 remake version with 220 gold. That is the reward you receive from defeating Baba Yaga and the Brigands.

Sorry I don't know the tech. stuff. I bought the quest for glory pack and played the first went to the second quest game and it asked for directory. I am at a complete loss as to what the hell I am supposed to do. I don't know how to open the first quest for glory game without it starting up. Also I don't know what the directory that opens up in qfg2 means,so many abbreviations too little understanding of what this stuff means. Can anyone explain what I can do to import character from qfg1 to qfg2 in easy to understand language?

If you've saved a character in the first game, you should be able to right-click the icon and select one of the options to view the files in the folder. Find your .sav that you created, and copy and paste it into QFG2's folder. You should see it in the list of files when importing.

I did save my character from first but I don't know what you are referring to when you say :right click" on I see (in qfg2) a list of files(?) and a change directory to the right of that and when I open up qfg1 i can go back to saved games to play or change directory but I have no idea what that means. Sorry to be such a numbskull but I don't know these things.
