Alright, So Quake 3 Arena has hit GOG!, This list here will make you run the game run with whatever resolution monitor you have and fix small bugs that you might come across.

Ioquake base
http://ioquake3.org/get-it/ Download and install the main thing then do the update install and after that drag those into the main quake 3 folder. makes the game able to alt tab and updates engine and fixes small bugs

HD RESOLUTION
This auto fixes the resolution for Team arena as well so no need to worry

http://blog.obelisk.ro/2010/09/widescreen-resolution-quake-3-ioquake3.html

Extract it then put the program in the main folder of the game and click to launch it then it will ask you for the resolution then it will create a desktop shortcut of the game to run in that resolution. works on XP,7,8,8.1,10

HD FONT AND ICONS + BUG FIXES ( Give ZerTerO thanks on moddb for this! )

http://www.moddb.com/mods/high-quality-quake/downloads/hqq-high-quality-quake-v34

Follow what he says and this will pretty much fix a lot of bugs, Glitches and add hd resolutions for everything that is font related and icons.

HD TEXTURES

Now if you want to make the game look a little bit more up to date you can download this HD Texture pack here

http://ioquake3.org/extras/replacement_content/

extract and put into the baseq3 folder inside the quake 3 game folder.

FOV + TEAM ARENA

And for FOV copy paste this command line /cg_fov 100
Copy this for team arena as well, Choose what type of FOV that suits you!

SMALL FIXES

LOW MEMORY FIX

Open your q3config.cfg file in both /pathtoquake3/baseq3 and /pathtoquake3/rq3/ and look for the line "seta com_hunkmegs" and changes its value to 96 or above, then save the file.

MOUSE + TEAM ARENA MOUSE FIX

Now from what I have experienced Quake 3 has a problem which your shooting will get stuck on auto fire or just wont shoot at all.. Now here is a simple easy fix for this problem

In game go command line and copy paste this \in_mouse -1 and reset the game after putting that command in and you should have the mouse problem fixed!

For team arena you will have to put this fix into the CFG file inside the baseq3 folder look for the \in_mouse "1" and put a - in front the 1 and save changes and this should fix the mouse issue in Team arena

This will fix any mouse bugs when shooting in game, For all versions of windows past XP up to 10

TEXTURE DETAIL SLIDER RESET FIX ( rare problem not all have this )
Applies to team arena as well

r_picmip 0
r_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR

Do the same with these in the in game command line, This should fix the graphics options sliders and others things to stop resetting when you shut the game off.

AND FOR CHARACTER SKINS AND MAPS ! ENJOY

http://pl.ws.q3df.org/models
Download any character you like and put it into the baseq3 and mission pack if you play team arena and enjoy new character bots.

Map
http://lvlworld.com/

do the same thing like the character skins

Anyone got any comments on what ioQuake (http://ioquake3.org) is like? Does it work with the GOG version? Does it automatically do most of the stuff listed here?

This version of the game GOG has does not need IO quake at all pretty much our version if it uses it or not does all that the fix on that site does. The only thing you will have to use, Using GOG's or the modded version from the site will be what I posted above.

Just get the game and do those little things and you will be on your way to blowing shit up! :)

Edit: I have an IOQuake moded version from a CD Version I own and they have both identical flaws out the box and do the exact same thing from testing, So my thoughts are that it is using IO to run. If I can get a GOG Staff to confirm this that would be great!

Yeah I just tried ioQuake out a bit and I won't bother with it. The settings in the q3config file don't seem work for ioquake, meaning you need to put everything in via the ingame console. The guy who made this seems to think that changing the field of view is cheating...

ioQuake uses it's own config file. It may be possible to rename the vanilla config file, but there might be unforseen consequences.

Do you know what the config file ioQuake uses is called? Where it's located?

I think it's in %APPDATA%\Quake3\, but I'm sitting in front of a Linux system, so I can't check. If it's not there, you could try to search for quake in your user directory.
Gracias! I'm running the Steam version of Quake III Arena, but will be buying the GOG version this week. I appreciate the heads-up on these cool little upgrades.
Does the custom widescreen resolution still break the intro video and cutscenes?

Yes it does there is no known fix for that yet... I am currently trying to program a fix to stack intro and other videos over the resolution fix to prevent it from going black screen.

Hope you manage to fix it then. The cutscenes aren't much, really, what with just introducing the characters for each Tier, but it'd still be nice to get them.

I read it was something to do with the video player not knowing what to do with 4:3 videos in a non 4:3 resolution. I wonder what would happen if the videos being played were changed to match the custom resolution aspect ratio, whether they be stretched or pillarboxed or something?

(I'm from ioquake3.org)

You absolutely don't need to download this executable to get an "HD" resolution with Quake 3. You can just use these commands:
http://wiki.ioquake3.org/Players_Guide#HD.2FHigh_Resolutions

They'll work best in ioquake3, but you can use them with id's quake 3 executable. Which as far as I know gog is not distributing.

Someone else asked about the config file location with ioquake3, the answer to that question is here.

The best way to play Quake 3: Arena is with ioquake3, it will be easiest to just get your CD key & pak0.pk3 out of the gog/id version and copy them into an ioquake3 installation. You'll get all of the improvements, bug fixes, and be more secure with ioquake3 than with id software's quake 3 binary that hasn't been updated in over a decade.

No updates, we still need an x-plat launcher/updater as I outlined here: http://community.ioquake.org/t/need-a-new-project-for-ioquake/487/5?u=timedoctor
