Some people might not like the look of vanilla Quake 3 Arena so lets change that!

Let's start with the base of the game

To get the best out of the game with updated security and alt-tab function with higher resolution support you will want to download this and follow instructions from the site. http://ioquake3.org/get-it/

HD Icons & font plus miscellaneous bug fixes. ( Thanks to ZerTerO on moddb )

This modder has made updated fonts and other things to modernize Quake 3 at higher resolutions. Link will have provided instructions to install. http://www.moddb.com/mods/high-quality-quake/downloads

HD Texture pack from ioquake team

The guys over at ioquake have an HD texture pack to spruce the game up and make it look up to date to the Quake Live counterpart. Instructions are provided in the link. http://ioquake3.org/extras/replacement_content/

Field of view change ( FOV )

Here is a command line for adjusting the FOV in Quake 3 + Team Arena expansion, This might not work for ioquake but for the vanilla game it works. Type or copy into the command line in game "/cg_fov 120" Change digits to choose FOV you desire.

Low memory error fix ( ONLY USE IF YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM )

Mods or other changes take memory and sometimes you might get this error of low memory so the easy way to fix this is typing this into the command line in game "seta com_hunkmegs 96"

Stuck Fire and mouse responsiveness fix ( ONLY USE IF YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM )

if you experience stuck firing and mouse feels odd when aiming type this into the games command line in game "\in_mouse -1" Use this for Quake 3 & Team Arena expansion.

Texture slider reset fix ( ONLY USE IF YOU HAVE THIS PROBLEM )

This is a very rare problem but if you have it well here is the fix, Copy this into the games in game command line "r_picmip 0" and "r_texturemode GL_LINEAR_MIPMAP_LINEAR" This can be applied to Team Arena as well if it has the problem.

Anyone got any comments on what ioQuake (http://ioquake3.org) is like? Does it work with the GOG version? Does it automatically do most of the stuff listed here?

This version of the game GOG has does not need IO quake at all pretty much our version if it uses it or not does all that the fix on that site does. The only thing you will have to use, Using GOG's or the modded version from the site will be what I posted above.

Just get the game and do those little things and you will be on your way to blowing shit up! :)

Edit: I have an IOQuake moded version from a CD Version I own and they have both identical flaws out the box and do the exact same thing from testing, So my thoughts are that it is using IO to run. If I can get a GOG Staff to confirm this that would be great!

Yeah I just tried ioQuake out a bit and I won't bother with it. The settings in the q3config file don't seem work for ioquake, meaning you need to put everything in via the ingame console. The guy who made this seems to think that changing the field of view is cheating...

ioQuake uses it's own config file. It may be possible to rename the vanilla config file, but there might be unforseen consequences.

Do you know what the config file ioQuake uses is called? Where it's located?

I think it's in %APPDATA%\Quake3\, but I'm sitting in front of a Linux system, so I can't check. If it's not there, you could try to search for quake in your user directory.
Gracias! I'm running the Steam version of Quake III Arena, but will be buying the GOG version this week. I appreciate the heads-up on these cool little upgrades.
Does the custom widescreen resolution still break the intro video and cutscenes?

Yes it does there is no known fix for that yet... I am currently trying to program a fix to stack intro and other videos over the resolution fix to prevent it from going black screen.

Hope you manage to fix it then. The cutscenes aren't much, really, what with just introducing the characters for each Tier, but it'd still be nice to get them.

I read it was something to do with the video player not knowing what to do with 4:3 videos in a non 4:3 resolution. I wonder what would happen if the videos being played were changed to match the custom resolution aspect ratio, whether they be stretched or pillarboxed or something?

DreamedArtist: HD TEXTURES

Now if you want to make the game look a little bit more up to date you can download this HD Texture pack here

http://ioquake3.org/extras/replacement_content/

extract and put into the baseq3 folder inside the quake 3 game folder.
No screenshots? Oh okay.

DreamedArtist: HD RESOLUTION
This auto fixes the resolution for Team arena as well so no need to worry

http://blog.obelisk.ro/2010/09/widescreen-resolution-quake-3-ioquake3.html

Extract it then put the program in the main folder of the game and click to launch it then it will ask you for the resolution then it will create a desktop shortcut of the game to run in that resolution. works on XP,7,8,8.1,10
(I'm from ioquake3.org)

You absolutely don't need to download this executable to get an "HD" resolution with Quake 3. You can just use these commands:
http://wiki.ioquake3.org/Players_Guide#HD.2FHigh_Resolutions

They'll work best in ioquake3, but you can use them with id's quake 3 executable. Which as far as I know gog is not distributing.

Someone else asked about the config file location with ioquake3, the answer to that question is here.

The best way to play Quake 3: Arena is with ioquake3, it will be easiest to just get your CD key & pak0.pk3 out of the gog/id version and copy them into an ioquake3 installation. You'll get all of the improvements, bug fixes, and be more secure with ioquake3 than with id software's quake 3 binary that hasn't been updated in over a decade.

No updates, we still need an x-plat launcher/updater as I outlined here: http://community.ioquake.org/t/need-a-new-project-for-ioquake/487/5?u=timedoctor
