Socratatus: All I want is to be able to name my character in the game. I don`t care about all that `authentication crap`. That`s why I get a GOG game. I don`t want some kind of disguised DRM. I don`t go online, I just want to name my character. That`s it.

Why am I even responding to you, it`s not like you even know. I`ve seen people like you try and tell me what you `think` is happening, then a month later it turns out they can do what i`m asking and people like you just slink away. i`ll remember your name for just when they do impement custom naming for people without GOG Galaxy.
I don't really understand the hostility in your post. The 'Explorer' bit is there to allow a DRM free version. Sure, it's possible to put a box in the game asking the player to set a name. That's not what they did though, because the game's designed to take names from player profiles on Steam / Galaxy / PSN.

Sorry that's not the answer you're looking for, but they had to use something for the online account authentication for the multiplayer aspects. They chose to use 3rd party authentication for that.

If it really bothers you that much, the default string "Explorer" is coded somewhere in the game files. Find it and change it.

styggron: Ok tried the new patch. No good. Still the same problem. Crash on launch. Yes I met the requirements i7, nvidia updates, SSE4.1 etc etc been through all that before.

I'll wait 2 more weeks so will d/l whatever patch is current then and give it one last go and hopefully it will start.

Glad to see that for most people, it is now either working, or working better.

ShamefulManny: Did you try to verify you game (under "more-manage installation-verify / repair" in galaxy) after downloading the patch? When I first tried to play again after downloading the patch it crashed (for the first time for me), but after verifying it started fine again.
I don't use galaxy. I only, and will only ever use direct downloads.
Almost 2 weeks now and still can't get the game to start. (Yes I meet the specs, yes I did updates etc etc) just crashes to desktop.,

Not sure if I just want to just put it "on the shelf" and come back to it in 6-8 months or a year or start the refund process. :( I've only got a tiny bit more time to decide on this now.

I know this may be extreme, I often format my hard drive and do fresh install of windows. It does wonders for your performance, and clears up a lot problems like this one. If you haven't done it in a while it's worth a shot.

You might be hurting yourself by not using Galaxy. You could still install the game manually then import it into galaxy and do the repair/check to make sure nothing differs from the download.

You could try to delete the contents of the "No Man's Sky\Binaries\SETTINGS" and "No Man's Sky\GAMEDATA\SHADERCACHE" if they are even populated yet (backup'em before just to be sure).

They might have gotten rid of the Visual C++ runtimes I can't see a dependency anymore. But the game uses XInput9 so you might download one of the old DirectX client web redistributables and try installing them.

And should you find the dump file (.dmp/.mdmp) via Application Eventlog (Event Viewer) on your disk you could post it so one of us or me could take a look at it (no warranties dumps sometimes have clear info but often they do not except for real experts).

Btw as a paying customer why not try contacting Hello Games support directly? http://www.no-mans-sky.com/support/

Thanks everyone.
No way I'm formatting my hard drive for NMS in the hope it might work. From everything I have seen I am probably highly unlikely to play it for more than an hour due to lack of content and repetitive content.

Also waaay ahead of you, I always clear the data from the users/appdata directory before installing a new version :)

As for Galaxy sorry. No way.....EVER. It doesn't say anywhere Galaxy is required to run the game if it did I would have have never pre ordered it. For me I want manual direct downloads. I do appreciate your point regarding galaxy but Galaxy is not for me and never will be. Especially just for 1 title. :)

Like I said, I only have 2 options. I have 1 day or two left to put in for refund or I'll just let it sit there and revisit it in maybe 8 months or 12 months when it will probably have more content.

Contacting Hello Games is not an option because soon GoG's guarantee will run out.

I really appreciate people pitching in with options for helping. Thank you all for those suggestions :)

Who told you to format your drive? NEVER format your drive for cases like this. Ignore whoever told you that crap.
It's a few posts above, they were only trying to be helpful, I still appreciate the effort they made to render assistance :)

Ah, I see now. I guess he meant well. A friend of mine got into the really bad habit of reformatting his drive for every little thing that went wrong on his pc, including his games. It got to the point that he was causing himself a lot of stress. The only time I would ever advised reformatting is if you got a Trojan Virus that you couldn`t get rid of with normal anti-virus.

Reformatting should only happen every year or so and only if you personally need a fresh pc.

Trying to figure out what`s wrong with your game\pc, but don`t really have enough info to go on.

I had that problem when I bought the game on steam. Not sure what your specs are, BUT... If you have a program called Raptr running, Kill it, then launch the game. It solved my problem (of course I had already gotten a refund from steam, so I went the GoG route instead... No problems until just now (patch 1.07) I crash about an hour into play, which sucks because I was farming the crap out of a huge Emeril Column.... All lost.....
Thank you for the suggestions, no I don't have raptr. I removed a stack of processes just in case to no avail. I saw GoG has a 1.07 patch. I will try that as my last attempt and then I shall just shelve the game for 6-8 months before trying again. As I mentioned there is not enough content to keep me playing from what I see, way too repetitive so I'll just sit tight with this.

From the source:

I've kept these reddit links bookmarked just in case i run into problems when i run the game, they might have something to help?

That second link was specific to getting less pop-in and better performance after the latest patch (1.09).

Thank you for those I shall look. For me the game does not even start. Just crashes (yes I meet the spec and have open GL update etc) :)
