djranis: isnt 8 hours very long, i mean 8 hours takes 8 hours of a day
I'd like to point out that I have never actually played a game for 8 hours strait, nor would I ever want to. The question was "could you play". Also let me say that I have nothing against someone who likes to play games for 8 strait hours; god bless, go to it, just stand on the other side of the room if you will because I can't imagine you smell too good.

Though I never met anyone who's played that long, I doubt they'd smell they've only sat down for a quarter of a day, not very smelly activity and office worker pretty much do the same every day.
Just banishing an American stereotype here :)

Very True...but office workers get up to use the bathroom every once in a while.

lol
I played Fallout: New Vegas just the other day for over 8 hours. It used to happen fairly often back in the 90's, not so much these last couple of years.
I've been playing Golden Sun: Dark Dawn for at least eight hours straight. I've played every game in the Mega Man Legends series for that long, and I know I can and have been able to get eight consecutive hours of Pokemon in. Ten years ago I literally played 20 hours of Lunar Legend straight through and beat the game in one sitting, because my aunt's house was a REALLY boring place to drop a kid off for the weekend.

MMOs tend to lend themselves to that sort of marathon gaming, but I like to stay away from multiplayer in general. I play games so I don't have to socialize. Multiplayer defeats the whole purpose there. I could play New Super Mario Bros. Wii with my brother for that long, though, provided we don't kill each other for failing miserably at co-op.

Nobody should ever actually play anything for eight hours straight, though. At the very least use a handheld so you can get up and walk around. Sitting still for that long's actually pretty bad for you.

MrFunkyFunk: Too many for my own good! :P

Not easy when you get older (I get tired a lot quicker / responsabilities / etc) but it's hard to resist a good game when you have a lot of fun.
So true! :)

To bad we can't ctrl-z it all and do it like we used to! :P

No seriously, I'm glad I don't do it like I used to. Just have to have a balance... :]
Baldurs Gate and Fallout series, easily.

WoW too, if I still played it =)

lol what if someone was jumping on the wii fit for last 8 hours, i am sure you can smell something wrong there ( plus it would be wrong for someone to love their wii fit so much)

Zookie: What game could you play for 8 hours straight?
There are lots of games I could play for 8 hours straight:

Starcraft
Dota
Diablo 2
Counter Strike
Imperialism
Civilization series
Oblivion and Morrowind
Indiana Jones and the Fate of Atlantis
The Dig
Zelda 2
Super Mario Brothers 2 or 3
Final Fantasy 1/4/5/6
Half Life
Unreal Tournament/UT2k4
Ultima Online
World of Warcraft
Sanitarium

If it's engaging, it's not hard for me to sit and play that long (when I have the time that is).
And two follow up questions

What game should you play for 8 hours straight?
The classics. There is nothing better than setting a full day aside, with or without friends, to sit down and really absorb a title from top to bottom.
What game have you play for 8 hours straight?
Sheesh... Well...

- Diablo 2 (running ladder I've done 16+ hour runs every day for 3-4 days straight. I lost girlfriends, jobs, and passing grades to this game).
- Starcraft (LAN with friends, it's way easy to do)
- DotA (IMO just a brilliant game concept, executed beautifully, and currently being bastardized by cash grabs)
- Sanitarium (sucked in, I beat this game two days after I downloaded it)
- Counter Strike (used to play competitively, not abnormal to break 10-12 hours in a day).
- Zelda 2: When I was a kid, my brothers and I would get a choice between a birthday party with friends, or a 24-hour NES marathon. Needless to say, we never had friends around for birthdays.

I'm sure there have been more.
At this point in my life if I play for an hour straight that's a real achievement. I don't expect I'll play any game for 8 hours straight in the foreseeable future.

However I did do that when I was younger. My longest gaming session is 17 hours on Heroes of Might & Magic 3. I'm pretty sure I passed 8 hours straight on Warcraft 2 and City of Heroes (may it rest in peace, or, better, get resurrected). There's a chance it happened with some other games, but I don't remember any other specific ones.
I think I did that with skyrim and might and magic: world of xeen.
I find it pretty easy to sink 8 straight hours in Eve Online if you're not careful...

What game have you play for 8 hours straight?
WOW (old WOW, not currently)
Warhammer Online
DDO
The Secret World (currently)

Seeing a pattern? Yeah...

Oh yeah, Assassins Creed 3, that one deserves it for sure, Naval Missions, mmm.... gimme more!
I've played many games for longer than 8 hours, but two games I've played far longer than any other game. These are Guild Wars and World of Warcraft. Warcraft 3 gets a mention as well, but that's only at LAN parties.
