Bonjour et bienvenue sur GOG.com!

We're happy to announce that the site is now available in the native tongue of Molière, ‎Jean-Jacques Rousseau, Honoré de Balzac, Jules Verne, and René Goscinny! Here, at GOG.com we're always trying to make DRM-free entertainment more accesible to gamers around the world. For your convenience we'll be rolling out support for different language versions of our service, and we're starting with French - right now! On top of main page translation, french-speaking support representative is waiting to help you with your game-related problems and answer your questions.

All this is nice, of course, but we know what is the most important part for you: the games! We've already had about 240 titles playable in French in our DRM-free catalog. With today's launch we're rolling out another 30 French versions of titles such as Heroes of Might and Magic 3 Complete, Prince of Persia: Warrior Within, or Darkstone for a nice 270+ French-speaking games total. You can get some of them with a nice discount in our special promo, aptly named "Vive la France", that lasts until Tuesday, November 11, at 4:59AM GMT.

But that's not all. As french cuisine dictates, no meal is complete without something small and sweet for dessert! For the next 24 hours (that is until Saturday, November 8, at 7:59AM GMT), we're giving away a dear French-made classic, Little Big Adventure for FREE a game that's seeing its 20th anniversary! Remember to sign-up for your free copy and celebrate the event with us, and play one of the many memorable oldies coming from France.

Have a nice day, everyone!
Very nice initiative and thx for the free game!

Trilarion: I used to make many giveaways. They were pretty simple. A single "I'm in" would usually be sufficient. Now I wonder if I would post them in the English general forum, member who do not visit it might feel unfairly treated. But duplicating the threads might just be too much work. How and in particular where would you now do giveaways?
I would keep them in the english general forum, since this will still have the highest number of active members and there is nothing against others checking here, since "giveaway" and "I'm in" are quite easy to understand. Even people not good at English should be able to participate :D

Niggles: Im actually quite surprised French came before German version.if anything it feels like there are many more german users of the site? :)
Why surprised? It goes both ways: if there are way more Germans on the site right now, it means France is an untapped market.

Trilarion: It might be that German users are a bit more anglophone than French ones. Or GOG found a a french speaking community manager first. It may just be coincidence but surely only a matter of time before spanish and german sections will appear here.

I have to admit I support this move now. Although I still feel there is a risk of fragmentation and although I will stay with the english edition just because I prefer a bigger community.

You can always just add a line or something that states "French posters welcome!" to your giveaway. Basically something to indicate that everyone's welcome :)

Please don't take this as me telling you what to do with your giveaways :)

hedwards: I think this is a bad idea. I don't object to them doing it eventually, but they haven't even finished any of the other projects they've started and now they want to go and add localization for the site?

More customers would be nice, but I think they mostly need to finish a few of the things they start so that they don't have the constant drain of cash flow to things that aren't yet bringing in any money.

Trilarion: I wonder which specific projects you mean. Linux support? Finally there. Galaxy client? Almost there? Top classics like Grim Fandango? Within reach. Newer AAA games? Depends on the goodwill of third parties.

I wonder which projects you mean that would directly increase the profit?
Clearly I mean the DRM-free pizza initiative, they've been talking about that one for how long, and it's not even in beta yet.

Yes, but I think Germans are probably more willing to use English than French users are.

gamesfreak64: true, i also know that if you compare the number of other languages to german, the germans are the ones that
seem to be able to learn dutch and other languages faster then the others.
The average dutch seems to speak many languages aswell.

I knew a few germans and they found dutch easier to learn cause it resembles our dutch language a lot..
I am very bad in talking german, bad in writing german, but i can understand almost all of it
,german dialects i cant follow , but also dialect english speaking like the dartplayers do is quite difficult to follow , they talk very fast, a true english auctionering is usually very good to follow cause they speak and pronounce all words very clear.

So i guess the germans adjust more easily.
That said , according to our national anthem were kinda related to them.
I'm not sure about the Dutch, but a part of that probably has something to do with the decades of cultural shame that came from the atrocities committed during WWII. One of the reasons why countries like the US avoid learning other languages is pride, if pride is socially unacceptable, then that's one less reason to resist learning other languages. But, I'm guessing another one is where Germany is located physically, there's several other languages just on the other side of the border, and I think it's probably a larger number than is surrounding France or the Netherlands.

There's also the detail of success breeding success in the US we're not much exposed to people that successfully learn multiple languages. So, we tend to have a bad attitude towards our possibilities. I wouldn't be surprised if that were the case in France to some extent.

I was wondering if other people had issues with the recent free game promotions. I never received anything related to AvP, and I figured I made a mistake somehow, but now I realise I didn't get LBA (and yes I clicked on the related promo during the 24h period).
I am not 'desperately' needing those but I am curious to know if there was some known issues with those promotions (like using Opera for instance).

Hey, thanks to you both, but it was really more of a feedback more than anything else. I think I will notify support with that anyway because the chances I made a mistake twice one the same kind of ebsite feature are a bit thin I think.
Hello, is it possible to change the language back to English? I am living in France but I am not French, and I don't understand the language very well.

Thanks

Go to the main GOG store page and on the bottom right you'll see the option to select the language, next to the Currency selection.

Sounds like a good idea - I'll do that. Only why should people send me french placards? :)
Good news. Which makes me think: if you end up making different keyboard configurations according to language, don't assume that all French-speakers have an AZERTY keyboard. In Quebec there's a sizable population of french-speakers and they use QWERTY keyboards. That's were friggin' Assassins' Creed is made, so it's pretty infuriating when a game pretends you don't exist and switches your keyboard to AZERTY if you change the voices to French.
For me, GOG is set to English, but I see both English and French in certain places. Is this normal? I certainly hope it isn't otherwise as they add more languages I'll just be seeing pages of translated text.

For example, on today's D&D promo page I have at the top of the page:

If you are using regional currency and this page is showing prices in dollars, don't worry. The prices in your regional currency will show in checkout. Sorry for the inconvenience.

Si vous souhaitez payer en EUR, mais que cette page vous montre uniquement les prix en dollars, pas d'inquiétude : Les prix en EUR apparaîtront sur la page de confirmation d'achat. Veuillez nous excuser pour ce désagrément.

I came here to say this exact thing. Can't there be some button to switch between languages? I don't want to be forced to see french all over, it's annoying.

Hopefully someone from GOG will take act of this matter and see to it that the french lines disappear from the English website.
