Good to see you back though, discussions about the proper way to dispose of a dead body ain't the same without you.

And then it keeps asking you for the disc over and over until it's rendered useless. And when you want to install it again, you have to google for CD-key because you've lost yours the last time you were moving. But yeah, PC-gaming, complete freedom, you cannot do precisely the same stuff as you could do with CD or DVD verions of your games with the Steam version. Well except, you know, you can, unless Steam comes with a version incompatible with the DVD one - which it does very rarely and it's, in fact, a problem of distributor and the version of the game they have provided.

I never understood how people can lose a CD. I mean, it's a big shiny piece of plastic, how on earth do you lose that? I can understand people losing things like Nintendo DS cartridges, those are small and you carry them around, but a CD is something you store in a plastic case or a cardboard box. Do people los their other things like that as well?

No, it's a big FLAT piece of plastic that easily slides under anything in the house. I lose them all the time under furniture.

They're easily enough lost. Especially if you regularly move or aren't very well organized. If you don't have a very large collection and have all the discs in one place, and obsessively put the discs back when you're done, you might not have a problem. Otherwise, it can be a real PITA at times.

Losing CD is not an issue, losing the manual, losing the case, or just shuffling CDs and thus losing access to CD-keys is. I have moved quite often in my life, and having to organize large stocks of CDs that I do have is highly irritating. And then there are probles like harddrive failures and similar that Steam cloud saves have pretty much resolved for me - so it's both more convenient and yet it doesn't remove any of the freedoms you have, as CDs, for the most part, contained some sort of copy-protection that could prevent you from playing your game anyway.

Not to mention, freedom is an ability to choose. Condemning one choice in favour of another does not reflect the wish to increase freedom, but to impede it.

Of all the things I've lost I miss my mind the most.

I've wondered about the losing CDs part and realized it can happen, but this part is what really gets me. I'm probably OCD when it comes to keeping games clean, but I get shocked when I see how some people treat their CDs. Letting them skid across the floor, leave them out in hot cars on the dash, or letting gunk and boogers get all over them. Do people not care about keeping their stuff in decent shape? I know if kids are playing the games that they don't know better a lot of the time, and accidents do happen. However people acting like they couldn't care less about the things the buy somewhat blows my mind.

I'm not singling you out TinyE, so don't feel bad. This was just a general observation I've had over the years from seeing other people's game collections when visiting them.
