I agree with that. It's basically a gimmick for selling (which kind of became the main gimmick after it's initial more 'old games' focus). And yes, dropping it would probably hurt them with the userbase that comes here for DRM-free. In a way I guess for me that'dve been preferable even as I vastly prefer they'd have all their focus on getting us games that simply weren't available anymore than the games I can already get elsewhere (not saying they're doing that less now).

That's why *I* come here, the classic games that either don't run well or aren't available elsewhere. I'd still do that even if there was some form of DRM on them :) But yeah, the no-DRM ones would probably drop like flies in that case.

Too bad that GOG's competition has taken a hint from that too and become more and more active offering older classics too. How many times have we heard here that it doesn't make sense to buy the D&D RPGs (which were once the crown jewels of GOG) here as you can get them all cheaper in Steam and GamersGate? Or System Shock 2 going to Steam as well, or all the Thief and Tomb Raider games there too...? They even have many PC classics that GOG doesn't, like from LucasArts.

I think especially Valve has tried to expand to old classics too because EA and Ubisoft are more and more competing with the new games. So Steam expands where it still can, that is older classics.

And even without that, I think GOG realized that old games may be a drying well, hence they tried to expand to also newer games. With DRM, they haven't made a similar move. As said, GOG decides what moves make sense to them.

That particular case is down to Atari and whoever publishes those games though I think, they put them on GG a long time ago already and Steam later (failed a couple of times with the license crap). And to be honest, I don't think it'd be that much of an issue, if they bothered to actually drop the price/offer the package here on GOG but I imagine GOG is the one who prefers not to do that in this case since they probably sell well to people who prefer to buy here or simply aren't aware of the better deals elsewhere on these titles.

It's like having a discussion about politics with members of the Tea Party on the podium. As much fun as it is, it is ultimately a waste of time.

Luckily, the GOG forums are not what the majority of gamers think and while the ignorant are often the most vocal, they are also, ultimately, the most insignificant. (Sadly unlike the Tea party). But while I will play Stratoshock,AC or ME 3 (the Multi-player is highly addictive. Damn). They can sit here and wallow in their priggish superiority complex.

Yes, It's a little known fact that DRM using data usually download themselves much faster than DRM-free ones... DRM-free bits are bigger.

If I had the same game on hellbound steam or origin, it would've been downloaded hours ago. Most of DRM Free stores except for GOG and maybe Humble Store have godawful download speeds. And that's a known fact.

And this as absolutely nothing to do with being DRM-free or not, but instead as everything to do with... maybe... you know... that indies publishers/stores don't have as much money as Valve and are not able to afford as big data centers.

Complaining that smaller digital distributors don't have Steam bandwidth is like complaining that Indy devs don't hire Hollywood celebrities to do their games voice over.

Just so you know, DRM Free games are being sold on steam too. I just wanted to say, if I had to choose between buying an indie game on Steam or anywhere else, I would choose steam all the time. The game will be DRM free most likely anyway, but I will not have to download a 3 GB game for 6-8 hours.

So with DRM Free games, buying on steam is usually better for me.

I get terrible download speeds at my workplace with Steam, around 0 kbps. GOG Downloader client gives at least several megabytes per second from the same corporate network.

That has nothing to do with GOG being DRM-free though, but probably more Steam service being region-locked and having regional pricing, for which reason they have probably blocked people from using proxy servers when they use the Steam client.

Well, that's true. Downloading games on GOG is always super fast for me too. Same for humble store most of the times.

But most less known shops have horrible speeds, and it's really keeping me away from buying a game that isn't avaible on steam (or GOG) from them.

I don't care about speed, I care about being able to pause and stability and GOG does a great job with both. Where I live I'm constantly suffering power outages and loss of signal and regardless of what happens the GOG download picks up where it left off. I'm guessing STeam probably does this too but I've never tried them.

GamersGate has a deal of DRM free games. And I've usually got a speed comparable to Steam when downloading from them. The biggest gripe I have with GG would be the hassle of having to rename the .exe after downloading if I wanted to backup the installer.

But no, GG isn't exclusively DRM free. I for instance have a key key to activate DLC for Duke Forever on Steam.

Personally I'm okay with Steam. Yes it's a single point of failure. If they decide to shut down my account I'd be really cross. But they do patch most games (a few seem to insist on using their own updaters, Spiral Knights and Driver San Franssico (through uPlay) spring to mind).

At least Steam provides patches. I've bought games from GamersGate, from Direct2Drive and from Impulse where I'd have to track down a specially made patch for that digital distribution service to install it. Most recently got Blood Bowl Chaos Edition on Steam after finding out that to play online I needed to patch my Legendary Edition, but there exists no patch for the Gamestop download version. So yes while I realise Steam can be a risk losing my games. As long as it exists I don't have to chase around looking for patches. And no more trouble having to burn CDs with patches so next time I want to play the game I won't have to hope the original download sites still exist.

Oh, that too. Sadly, most "indie" stores I checked do not support resuming paused downloads...

Wait....renaming launch to setup.exe is considered Cracking? I was not aware that using a rename command was actually cracking. Guess I should turn myself in to the police, just through the last week I've "cracked" several files during midterms when our Mac OS X users, who cannot find drivers for the Ricoh printers we have, have copied their document to a USB flash drive to get it printed at a dedicated machine setup for that express purpose. Sadly many don't get it saved as a .docx file when saving in word so I've had to "crack" it to get it to open properly.
DAMN THAT MAC OS X FORCING WINDOWS USERS TO RESORT TO CRACKING TO READ THEIR DOCUMENTS! ;-)
