Steam is better than that experience, but it's no panacea. As Mivas pointed out, it's pretty easy to get a crappy experience from Steam as well. I have quite a number of games on Steam at this point and for the most part it's pretty painless. But I've had a couple of frustratingly crappy experiences with Steam as well, similar to what Mivas posted. Just because Steam seems to be the more user-friendly of game clients doesn't make me love it. It does, however, give me some amusement as to how quickly people will accept a lesser of evils and call it good. ;)

Ah, I misunderstood you a bit. I see your point. My first bullet was about that the service is usually overpriced compared to prices at my country, either the last known or current. Common sense tells me that if game X used to be available a year ago here for price Y and now it's available unpatched on another service for Y+$5 or being sold in another country by that service for Y-$2, it's more expensive here.
You said it depends on where I'm and I said no because Steam blocks me from purchasing if I'm in different country than my card is tied to (personal experience).
I guess you meant if I was in Netherlands, I would have had an access to different resources (brick stores, games, and prices). If I lived in US, Steam games would have been a cheaper option for me. However I'm not, so I related it to real situation and real limitations.
As for your second part regarding games only available digitally, I admit I ain't probably in a position to answer in an informed manner. Too old to be boxed - I purchased two and they were in very raw, unstable state, so I avoid such games there and rather wait for GOG release. Only digital - I made one exception, Alan Wake, which was overpriced too compared to later GOG's. Meaning is that I don't really follow prices of these types of releases there.

If Steam is better for StingingVelvet than other similar services, good for him. It's not for me, as being a part of "people", and I wanted to say why. Not everyone has same experience.

No, I'm not a fan of DRM, but as far as I can tell, Steam has been (so far) superior to console gaming in one important aspect: It doesn't clutter the world with redundant hardware by pushing proprietary hardware down my throat.

You can still use Steam on your regular PC and not only that, they went out of their way to make it work on several OSes.

Steam is meh for me, but consoles need to die.

I bought Ghost Recon: Future Soldier on launch. It was a right mess, and even after update 1.7 I still had problems with this game. In the end I just picked up a copy for 12€ on the PS3 and played it there. I never boycotted Ubisoft because of their DRM, but I sure started because of their absolute horrible quality control.
I'll still pick up Rainbow Six: Patriots and Splinter Cell: Blacklist, but it sure won't be for PC. And I guess that's what they want as well. Porting games to PC seems like such a big hassle to them.

I have to admit that HOM&M 6 runs just fine performance wise though. But seeing as the game is a PC exclusive, the focus is a bit different. I guess the morale is to not buy anything from Ubisoft unless it's exclusive to PC. And yes, they really need to fix their update system. Updating has been this tedious since the 90's.

Origin titles are horrifying to backup and patch.

In some instances those Origin titles (like Spore) turn out to be deadware after all is said and done.

I never had any problems with Origin titles.
