Fair enough and I respect and admire your responsibility and integrity. My only complaint is that it might be a little harsh to lable someone who loses stuff as being irresponsible or as 'taking things for granted'. The fact is, shit vanishes. I'm not talking about large objects or expensive objects but things like socks or pens and I would imagine even the most responsible person in the world is guilty of possessing the odd sock or two.

I don't want to care. I have to if I want to bundle my CDs and my CD keys properly. I don't if I just have the game on Steam.

Yeah, I'll admit that I wasn't that good with keeping my stuff organized when I was younger, but I really don't have a problem with that now. Vita and other handheld games are kept safe in the small portable cases I bought and the vita games in the carrying case I bought for the vita (with the boxes kept on the self). PS2 games as well as Wii, Xbox games on the shelves and the disks in their respective cases.

Steam itself is kind of convenient with having games all in one place (but need to log in to access them first unless you're in offline mode...so there's that). GOG, Humble Bundle, Gamersgate, and a few other services operate the same way (sort of), you have a game shelf (or library) but you can have your games on both those websites (provided that they don't take down the game) and on your computer's hard drive and/or external backup, but even then it's still wise to back each and every one of them up just in case.

That can happen with any form of DRM, Steam really isn't that different.

I'm not entirely Anti-Steam. I just avoid these topics most of the time because of the disagreements and arguments that go on in them.

It's nothing surprising for me. If having a CD is a form of "snobism" or "elitism" today, why not go full elite and buy a vinyl? If I were to buy a physical music disc, it would be definitely a vinyl.

btw. DJ's who are not using analog media sources can be easily replaced with software :P DJ without a vinyl is not a DJ, is a fucking pussy. Anybody can mix digital music ;P

It's not really a question of "elitism" more a question of lack of choice; if you want a lossless digital copy of a song you usually have the choice between buying a CD and making one yourself or....nothing. (Unless you count torrenting an illegal copy as being a possibility)

Most people don't seek for loseless, so yes, it's rather elitism :P But I don't say it in a negative way. It's nothing bad to be elite from time to time ;-)

Sorry to burst your bubble, but 99% of the DJs out there you see scratching vinyl's are just using them for that, making scratch effects on an already digital track and as a sort of analogue rewind/fast-forward mechanism; the music isn't actually being played off of it, despite what they want you to think.

Yeah, this is probably why those DJ's have tons of labels on their vinyls to mark their samples.

A real DJ will always use vinyls. Pussies use mp3s. This is how you distinguish a good music club from a dump, by the way.

I go to music clubs to hear DJs who can do something I can't. If I want to hear some mp3s, I launch spotify.
So yeah, when I see a "dj" who uses a blank vinyl, I leave. I don't go outside to listen to pre-recorded CD music.

I realize that this is not a thread intentionally about gog.com or drm-free but why post "This is why people love Steam" here? That seems almost intentional to start a war to me. If a person wants to sing the praises of steam you could do that on the steam forum. Why should some people act upset that the users who like to use gog.com to get their games might not like this thread and voice their opinion about it? That's like getting upset at users of an Austrian economics web site for telling a communist to fuck off when he posts pro-communist comments there. Not that speech should ever be banned and these things can be discussed civilly, but what should one expect when disagreements happen?

Since the topic has gone somewhat to how awesome auto-patching and auto-updates are, I disagree with that. A new patch or update is not always for the better. Right now there are two options: you can install a base game and then track down and patch (official and unofficial) and mod everything that you want manually yourself, leaving out some things you don't want or you can rely on auto-patching to patch everything, even things you'd rather not change. This to me would be like either doing all my yard work and cleaning my house myself just the way I want it or else being able to subscribe to a service that does all of that for me regularly, but they do everything the way they want to do it, re-arranging my furniture and cutting my grass the way they want to.

I understand if people do not want to do their own yard work or clean their house or apartment, but I don't like option 2. I prefer option 3: I do what work I can and hire someone to do the other things the way I want them to be done if I don't have the time or can't do it myself. For games this would be modding and patching. After spending quite some time recently reading mod descriptions and read me files for Morrowind to keep mods from conflicting, I would like to be able to pay not only for creating a mod from an idea I have, but also to install and tweak just the way I want the game without conflicts or compatibility problems. For example, instead of replacing all body types in Fallout 3/New Vegas with a different body type I could go into the appropriate folder and edit each file individually so there are many different body types in the world, not just one. I would do a bad job though and it would take me awhile. If I could hire someone who has done that a lot they would do it much quicker and still do a better job than I could. I would like a game store to offer that kind of service or be able to legally hire someone to do it (I'm not a big fan of gift economies since I feel it creates a master-slave relationship, but whatevs).

Hell, mods aren't free (freedom) and open either though. Some modders want to tweak other mods they didn't make and they get yelled at and threatened to not be able to host mods by other modders. They might say go ahead and do it for your own personal use but don't upload the edited mod anywhere. Torrents will help keep the PC open though :) Don't have to worry about being allowed to host a mod or a mod host site going down and all the mods with it, like the Japanese Loda site or Megaupload.

Because annoying 2 hour installations with 7 patches are a thing of the past due to Steam, for the most part, which is a big reason people love Steam. I already admitted I wasn't thinking of the typical GOG Steam war, but the thread title is accurate and not trolling.

Fine, that's reasonable and I would agree that 2 hours of 7 different automatic patches before playing is annoying. I personally wouldn't really care to use Steam for anything other than multi-player but if they got rid of the DRM crap while keeping quality control I might actually try it and like it. That's not what the thread is about though so I'll let it drop.
