The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky, a traditional jRPG masterpiece with 50+ hours of breathtaking storytelling is available 15% off on GOG.com. That's $16.99 for the first week!

The Orbal Revolution changed the Kingdom of Liberl. Innovations created with the use of the mystical "orbal energy" advanced the civilization by centuries in just 50 years. Now gleaming airships take to the skies, the night is lit with orbal-powered lanterns, and communication is easier than ever with telephones. However, breakneck pace of change brings many risks. With the emergence of high-powered guns and potent magic the kingdom has become a powder keg. This is where the Bracer Guild steps in, an efficient and esteemed force acting as police and negotiators. And here is where your story begins…

The first proper JRPG in GOG.com's catalog is a true gem, a title acclaimed for its novel-like multi-faceted characters, drama-packed story, and detailed lore. Follow Estelle and Joshua, children of the greatest hero of a bygone era, on a quest to find their father and uncover a plot threatening to destabilize an already volatile world. The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is a rare game that creates a vast fantasy world and populates it with monsters and men you will care about. The game adds an original twist to the turn-based combat system, features highly customisable gear, and tops it all off with surprising accessibility even for genre-newbies.

Discover the secrets and dangers of Zemuria with your band of vagabonds in The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky 15% off for the first week. That's $16.99 until Tuesday, August 5, at 3:59PM GMT.

AttObl: Aw yeah! Feena is one of the best characters in Ys!
I really liked Feena a lot, though the English voice they chose for her was WAY too girly/childish, in my opinion. I chose to ignore the voice they used and just stick with the one in my head. Mahaha~ XD

I've played Ys Book I & II from start to finish at least eight times, in different incarnations. First on TurboGrafx, then as Ys Eternal. Even as we speak I have the Steam versions of Ys I & II loaded on both my home computer AND my work computer! lol~

CharlesGrey: You might want to be more specific -- what exactly did you like or dislike about those games? Also, which FF game(s) did you try?

Kunovski: I've played FF I, VII and VIII... don't know, mostly those random encounters, but also the overall story and stuff around, couldn't really get into it... but Chrono Trigger was just great and I played through it quite quickly :)
FFVII is still one of my all-time favourite games. Partly nostalgia, I'll admit, since it was the first big JRPG I've played. If they ever re-release it on GOG I'd probably buy it, even though I already bought several copies on PC and PSX and finished it several times. :x

But I'll agree about the old-school random encounters. Major turn off for me nowadays, and one of the reasons why I stopped playing JRPGs. However, apparently this game doesn't really have random encounters. And according to some fellow GOGers, it also comes without several other typical ( potentially annoying ) JRPG aspects. Otherwise I probably wouldn't be interested either, but this seems to be a fairly unique and modern take on the genre.
I see a lot of people worrying about gamepad support...

Thing is, even if gamepads are not supported by the game, you can always use programs like (costs 10 bucks), [url=https://github.com/Ryochan7/antimicro]Antimicro (open-source), or the likes.
They allow you to emulate keyboard and mouse with a gamepad.
It seems The Legend of Heroes: Trails in the Sky is second only to Divinity: Original Sin as a top seller

The game doesn't have random encounters. All enemies are visible on the field as you approach them. Run into them before they spot you and you get a preemptive strike. Allow them to touch you from behind gets them a preemptive strike. Later in the game you'll get an item that marks monsters as red dots on the map and makes them visible from far away. Afterwards, you can also get an item that makes monsters ignore your presence.

As far as story goes...the story takes its time to pick up the pace. It's not very epic early on...you're simply a mercenary/police officer hybrid who does jobs for people and deals with thieves, kidnappers and arsonists. Eventually you'll start seeing the overlying plot as more and more puzzle pieces start falling into place. The final chapter really picks up pace and the ending...hooboy.

The characters seem a bit cliché at first, but they're also quite lovable. And there's amazing attention to detail. Every NPC has a name and a personality and many have their own ministory going on in the background. (their dialogue changes after every plot event)

The combat is basic at first, but becomes more strategic later on. Grinding isn't necessary since the experience is scaled. All in all, the game doesn't have many console RPG pitfalls and the only hurdle about it is the fact that the plot takes a little while to pick up.

Just in case im seeing my experience with the game with rose tinted glasses.
Haha. No worries. If I decide to buy it, it will be because I want to try it based on multiple information, including yours. ;)

genkicolleen: I've changed my avatar to Feena from Ys Book I & Book II in honor of this new Falcom release... and due to my excitement over getting Trails in the Sky! :D

I wholeheartedly approve of this :D
It is really refreshing seeing such support for this game ,it is really worth it.

Well... what counts as a pitfall? A slow-building plot is no bar for me, but the things I don't like about JRPGs include much of what genre fans love (or at least accept) about them... so a triumph for you may be a deathblow for me. That doesn't make them bad, just not to my taste. As you might imagine, it is sometimes difficult for me to parse useful information from JRPG reviews. :p

This is definitely going on my list of future buys when/if I actually have any money whatsoever.
Could anyone of the buyers post here the file information that is missing in the wiki page. And comment on anything else that that could be wrong/missing?
I was holding off purchasing the PSP version because I knew the game was coming to PC with enhanced features, but I did not expect a GOG release! Wow!

I'm going to do something I usually don't do and wait for the game to go back full price before purchasing it. More JRPG please! :)
Seems like I'd be missing out on all the first day hooplah if I didn't buy. So. Bought! Thanks, all involved.

zaine-h: The game supports controllers, but there have been some reported issues with the 360 controller in the Steam forums.
I haven't tried it myself though so I don't know how well it works.

Jonathanimal: thank you. didn't see controller options in the menu. but i'm at work and don't have a controller here anyways. and my break is about over. ah well.
The controller configuration options aren't in the game's menu. There is a separate configuration utility provided that handles keyboard/mouse/controller rebinding and advanced graphics options.
