So this affected all the retail copies did it? I don't actually remember the last time I even bothered to fire up my copy. Only played it once or twice mind -- and I really wonder why I even bought it =/

DarrkPhoenix: I hope I'm not the only one who isn't the least bit surprised by this. While this sucks for those whose copies of Gears of War have stopped working, I'm personally cheering as this will serve as a major example to the masses as to why games that contain DRM should be avoided. It also makes the "no DRM" selling point for GOG all the more poignant.

I wish you were the only one who wasn't surprised by this, but unfortunately a lot of us have been waiting for this exact thing to happen someday.
My favorite part of that Ars Technica article:
"Those who pirated the game, as usual, continue to play with no issues."
I would never advocate piracy personally, especially when it looks like Epic and MS are doing a fine job of that on their own with boneheaded moves like this.

Yes I have the retail copy of the game. And yes, I am getting the same error. Thank you Micro$ucks.

You bought it because it was the first game released with the new Unreal3 engine, the successor to a long line of succesfull PC game engines. Then you found out it was a shitty console port, that felt like playing the kind of table hockey where the players can only slide along predefined grooves. So you stopped playing it. Actually, substitute "me" for "you", but it sounds familiar, no? ;-)

My thoughts exactly. While this is without a doubt a pretty lousy situation for owners of GoW it will further the point of DRMs dysfunctionality and coupled with the overall negatively posed majority hopefully help prevent draconian DRM ideas. And may be sooner or later DRM overall will go the way of StarForce.
They are making free pro-piracy advertising, and that's good. You use DRM? Sooner or later you should go bankrupt because you deserve it, imho.

Nobody deserves to go bankrupt. Microsoft, EA, Sega, and many other teams all publish great, great games. Sure, it may suck when they put DRM in, but they have to at least try to keep people from illegally downloading their games.
That's the reason why I cancelled my order of Fallout 3 when I heard it was infected with Securom.
Prior to buying a game simple check here if something is wrong with the merchandise

As has been mentioned before when you buy a game infected with DRM you don't buy it, leasing is what comes closest. Another party than you controls the when, how and even if you're playing a game.

Hahah. Nope. I got because it 50% off at AsoBitCity and I wanted to spend a lot of money to make the cost of the journey worth while =) I think I also picked up Call of Duty 4 at the same time, whatever else I bought I only picked up Gears due to the low price, it looked fun to start with but meh. I am loving the DRM message though. It's lots of fun =P

Obviously, Epic didn't MEAN for this to happen and claim to be working on it. Nevertheless, is this the first time our worst DRM dreams actually came true? A DRM'd game someone legally purchased just magically gets kill-switch'd?
That's pretty creepy.

Y2K it strikes sooner or later :p
I presume Hitler would approve of what Epic did.
but nevertheless. PC game industry will suffer from this incident. Even less games may appear on our machines because of that. Companies will see that it really is pointless to have DRM but will give up PC platform completely thinking that it is not worth trouble.
and that would be bad.
