Welcome to Battle of the Games: vote today and get 60% off tomorrow!

We have officially welcomed Summer (at least for the Northern Hemisphere ;-)) during the CDP RED Group Summer Conference just two weeks ago. And even though the temperatures outside haven’t quite reached their peak yet, GOG.com will be packing some serious heat for the next 17 days. We’ve already given away Worlds of Ultima 1 & 2 earlier today, but this Summer Promo is something much, much bigger.

For each day between June 19 and July 5, two games will battle one on one and you will decide which title wins. VOTE NOW! Each Round of the Battle begins at 1 PM GMT (9 AM EST) and ends after 24 hours. After each round, the winner of the popular vote will be discounted 60% and the runner-up 40%, for the following 24 hours. Bookmark the Battle of the Games page, check back every day, vote, and buy amazing games 60% off during our summer Battle of the Games!

Round 1: Myst: Masterpiece Edition vs The 7th Guest
The two best-selling PC adventure games in history. Period.

Back in the early 90’s trying to make a game that stood out in terms of graphics was an ordeal--the floppies could handle a few MB and the 3D renders or videos required a hundredfold more disk space. Only a madman would try to create a game for that new shiny rounded disk that required expensive hardware and was soon to become that-thing-that-didn’t-catch-up. However, Myst and The 7th Guest made a couple of million people buy a CD-ROM drive. How? Because those two games were, and still are, amazing. The epic adventure in the lost empire of the D’ni and the spine-chilling escape from the mansion of horrific riddles both took the hearts of gamers by storm.

Vote now for your favorite dreamlike (or nightmarish) adventure and buy the voting winner tomorrow 60% off, while you can pick up the runner-up 40% off. Be sure to tweet, share, Google+, or stand on the street corner and shout to the cars passing by to vote for your favorite pick.

Bouli: This competition is not very fair, and even maybe a bit disrespectful towards the 2 games. What if Amazon Kindle organized a contest about "who's the best, Victor Hugo or Shakespeare" ??
avatar
uchos: Then they'd be making a completely different contest ;)
If they where asking "What would you like to see on sale, 'Les Miserable" or 'Hamlet'?", would be a more appropriate similitude.

And by the way, the Amazon 'digital video game download' (or whatever is called) department actually does something like that quite often, letting people vote 1 (out of 4 or 5) game to go on sale next week.
Youre right, GOG doesn't ask to vote for the best game, but for the game that people want in promo. Maybe i'll vote in this case. For the game that i don't already own. :)

That's the spirit! ;)

TheEnigmaticT: Well, in any logical world, Shakespeare would win, then. :P
Sorry couldn't resist:

Vote 7th Guest! Myst goes on sale all the time anyway.
while I'm not interested in either of these two games, it's fun idea for a sale :)
Myst is no game.
I have them both already so there is no financial gain for me either way. So of course I voted for The 7th Guest!

I really like this whole concept and am anxious to see all 17 matchups. Perahps once it is all over they should pick the top 5 by number of total votes (so even a "losing" game can be in it) and have one last Battle Royale for Best Game on GOG. Then mark them down in order of ranking:

5th Place - 20% Off
4th Place - 40% Off
3rd Place - 60% Off
2nd Place - 80% Off
1st Place - 100% Off

AndyBuzz: I don't have a single doubt that the selection of games will be great. I suggested simply to have same priced "opponents" to keep the focus on which game people prefer, rather than what will be more profitable.
In any case I have full confidence that you know your stuff better than I do and I'm eagerly awaiting the rest of the Battles! :D
Still wouldn't be fair.

If one of the games has been in promos more often (or more recently), people who already got it during those past promos won't vote for it if they are interested in the alternative even if they think the game that has been in promos more often is the better one.

Anyways, I voted for Myst on principle. I think it's the better game.

Dude, I read Shakespeare (Taming of the Shrewd) and let me tell you, Victor Hugo is more relevant in contemporary society by a landslide.

What a novel concept and a good idea. A little interactive fun to welcome summer and, I'm sure, a few new games for my shelf.

In this contest I don't lose. I liked 7th Guest better and I already own a copy. I would love to see it win the popular vote, however I do not yet own Myst so if I were to buy it it would be better to do so at a higher discount rate. Win, win.

Can't wait to see tomorrows prize fighters.

mqstout: How about not showing the poll results until the next day? Keep up the suspense.
This!

Also, vote for the 7th Guest :)

I don't think the aim is total fairness. I don't think theoretical fairness could even exist in such a concept. It's an interactive promo that gets customers involved and excited and it's an excellent idea.
In the end I think most people will vote based on the same reasoning as you and have fun in the process.

Forsooth!
What vileness shall drip from thy tongue which supposes what relevancy applies to that of another.
Wouldst not the honor of bestowing that title belong to those whom partake in their own society?
For if ones value is to be measured by relevance then I shall hold in value that whose words are more coherant to mine ears.
Damn you myst lovers, I own it already vote 7th guest, you know you want to.

It's funny cause I actually raised a debate.
I wouldn't mind if you left up the previous winners and final scores throughout the contest... we need some good things to argue over anyway ;)
