Welcome to Battle of the Games: vote today and get 60% off tomorrow!

We have officially welcomed Summer (at least for the Northern Hemisphere ;-)) during the CDP RED Group Summer Conference just two weeks ago. And even though the temperatures outside haven’t quite reached their peak yet, GOG.com will be packing some serious heat for the next 17 days. We’ve already given away Worlds of Ultima 1 & 2 earlier today, but this Summer Promo is something much, much bigger.

For each day between June 19 and July 5, two games will battle one on one and you will decide which title wins. VOTE NOW! Each Round of the Battle begins at 1 PM GMT (9 AM EST) and ends after 24 hours. After each round, the winner of the popular vote will be discounted 60% and the runner-up 40%, for the following 24 hours. Bookmark the Battle of the Games page, check back every day, vote, and buy amazing games 60% off during our summer Battle of the Games!

Round 1: Myst: Masterpiece Edition vs The 7th Guest
The two best-selling PC adventure games in history. Period.

Back in the early 90’s trying to make a game that stood out in terms of graphics was an ordeal--the floppies could handle a few MB and the 3D renders or videos required a hundredfold more disk space. Only a madman would try to create a game for that new shiny rounded disk that required expensive hardware and was soon to become that-thing-that-didn’t-catch-up. However, Myst and The 7th Guest made a couple of million people buy a CD-ROM drive. How? Because those two games were, and still are, amazing. The epic adventure in the lost empire of the D’ni and the spine-chilling escape from the mansion of horrific riddles both took the hearts of gamers by storm.

Vote now for your favorite dreamlike (or nightmarish) adventure and buy the voting winner tomorrow 60% off, while you can pick up the runner-up 40% off. Be sure to tweet, share, Google+, or stand on the street corner and shout to the cars passing by to vote for your favorite pick.
My vote is for Myst and it's winning for now :)

billy13: So the difference is a dollar ?

I may be cheap, but I'm not that cheap. Don't believe in bandwagons, either.
Some people can use that dollar to buy something else. It's not just about being "that cheap" for some. ;)

KillingMachine: I was just wondering the other day if we'd get a "Staycation" this summer. The "Battle of the Games" is interesting, but I can see myself probably only picking up winning games I'm interested in at the 60% and 40% split. If it were 60% and 50% I would have been more likely to go ahead and grab something on the losing side. Can't help but think of how disappointing it'll be if something I've been waiting for a good sale on will pop up and then lose.
So because of a dollar difference you'd not buy a game on sale? Unless you're like me where every dollar counts, I can't see why it'd matter so much. :\

Telika: Yes and my point is that following such logic just defeats the point of these actions. Which should be a selection between the most wanted of two games. If it was a calculation of the biggest profit, the GoG staff can do it themselves and skip to the result.

(Also, vote 7th Guest. but for better reasons than that.)
Well obviously not every voter will vote for such reasons. Some will vote for their favorite title so they or others can buy it, and some will vote for the underdog to give it some love(Via them or others buying it, etc.). Some will also vote to get a better deal for both games.

Is that so wrong to want to save money & use such calculations to vote a certain way and try to get a better deal? Is it also wrong to ASK(not force or demand) others to do so who might also want to get a better deal on one/both games? I don't think so, and I think it goes in line with the OP post.....we are being asked to vote which game gets the bigger discount, for WHATEVER reason, after all. In the end, you vote for(and possibly advocate) your reasoning behind your vote, and we do so for ours....sound fair?

This seems a bit odd.

The titling suggests we should vote for the one we like better (no contest here for the start).

But the effect it has suggests we should possibly vote for the one we haven't played already.

Hmm....

you should vote for the one that you want to get the bigger discount on. not that it matters much...

Whelp, time to get my 2000 "friends" on GOG and voting for 7th Guest. 0.o

(I kid, I kid....we all know I don't have THAT MANY "friends".)
The problem is, even though most/more people own Myst they are still voting more it. Are people voting for the game they want discounted or for their favorite? Because the latter is utterly pointless.

Some examples: People own both games(On GOG or physical media) and want to get a good deal on one of them so they can buy copies to give as gifts, or they own one or both games but they want more people to become interested in/playing the games so they vote for the one they want people to buy/play more.
Voted for 7th guest... Little bit sad that myst is winning :(

Well, the last case makes no sense in relation to Myst. It's hardly an anonymous, obscure niche title. It's one of the most famous, biggest selling games in PC history. It's not some hidden gem that no-one's heard of.

Still, I don't think everyone has played it......plus new gamers are born all the time. Some might want the newest crop of gamers to get into the games.
I don't have any interest in these two games, but I like this idea. It's a neat concept. I've always been a sucker for tournaments.

Edit: Voted for 7th Guest based on a post earlier in this thread saying which option would have more savings overall.

cich: Dudes and Dudesses,
Myst has been in various promos already. It's one of the best selling adventures games ever. You'll get it eventually if you really want it and it's worth even the $5.99 price tag.
Please, let's give a chance to relatively fresh on gog.com, 7th Guest.
Sincerely yours,
cich
Oh, this, so much... Too bad Myst is going to win :(

Yeah, I guess - to each their own. It just seems like a torturous and tenuous motivation to apply to a vote that is essentially about which game is going to be discounted slightly more.

But then I'm wasting time arguing about such a vote, so who am I to judge :)
Damn 7th guest isn't going to win, to make over 2200 votes in a little over 2 hours is just not going to happen. Oh well enjoy your discount myst fans, amazing so many people don't have it yet considering it has been on the site a lot longer than 7th guest

Well as I said above to another poster, to some a dollar saved is a dollar they can put towards something else. ;) They might want a GOG copy of a game here for themselves or others(Like to give in a contest or as a straight gift.), or they might want others to be able to buy such games for as cheap as possible.
