MichiGen: I have been using GOG Downloader only to download my DRM-Free games and just found out that I cannot download the games which I have bought a couple of days ago with it. Not a good decision in my opinion, having to download each file separately in a web browser is a huge step back - will check how it is possible to download the game backup via GOG Galaxy though...

EDIT: I do not see such option in GOG Galaxy, what a shame.
I guess that this would be mainly to force users to use GOG Galaxy more, but this is not the correct way how to do it. If I do not want to use another game client like STEAM / Battle.net / Origin / Uplay / EPIC / ... than I will simply not use it. The main reason why I have bought over 800 games on GOG till today is the reason that they are DRM-Free and I can download and backup their installers easily. And the big part of the DRM-Free functionality just took a hit now since you just made the option to download the files much more inconvenient. If at least the functionality to download all the goodies and game installer files would be available in GOG Galaxy...

DBDigital: I am not a fan of the Galaxy client, but you CAN do downloads/backups. If you go to your library, click on a game, then under "backups and goodies" that is how you can backup/download the installers. Personally though, I would rather use something like Xtreme Download Manager, it is open source (link a couple of posts up), hooks into browsers if you want via addons, and is faster than the Galaxy client. At least for me (not to mention I have the ability to pause/resume if needed too). You might want to give that a try. Yes it does require a couple of more clicks in the library to get all the extra goodies, but I seem to get all the functionality otherwise I had with GOG downloader (and a few additional perks).

If they dump the stand alone DRM-FREE installers, then I will go somewhere else. Otherwise, with XMD this is do-able. While I wish they would have been better at communicating this with us, and giving us options. We CAN still download the stand alone installers so the core of GOG is still here thankfully. The biggest problems I had is the the Galaxy client is a lot slower at downloading, and I need the ability to slow down download speeds since I don't have a ton of bandwidth to throw at large games and pause/restart downloads if needed. The GOG Downloader was perfect for this, and light weight. It is missed.
Many thanks for your help DBDigital. Apparently there is some room for improvement with my observation skills, found it :-) . I will give GOG Galaxy a chance now.

This is a major disappointment.

Galaxy doesn't fit the need, because I don't install games on my internet machine, only on my in-house LAN. So it's offline only.

Which is something of a problem because I have no idea when there's a game updated what exactly changed. Changelog doesn't really help. Take Train Valley, which says it's been updated, but the changelog says the last change was on 1 AUG 2019. I'm left with downloading EVERYTHING, then using a file sync program to figure out whether I should overwrite the old content or if it's just duplicate files with a new date.

It's a serious PITA downloading everything every time one of the games gets an update. I'd guess GOG is looking at an uptick in downloads from people like me who have no real way of accomplishing what the downloader did -- skip anything that's the most recent version. If the change was to the Mac version, and that information didn't get into the changelog, for example, it would just run the checksums and be done, rather than downloading the whole installer.

But hey, if they don't mind a lot of wasted money serving files we may or may not need, GOG's house, GOG's rules, amirite?

I am a bit confused. GOG Downloader also did not show what had been updated - you still needed to look at the website and follow the "What did just update" thread (if you did not want to use GOGrepo or similar tools.

Another BS from GOG after dropping the regional pricing.
When the regional pricing thing happened, I wrote that gradually abandoning downloader and slowly going for a client-only solution would come next, and people mocked me. Enjoy your Steam 2 in the foreseeable future, people.

Just found out GOG Downloader was gone when I bought a new game tonight (I have been here from the beginning and own a lot of GOG games.) I feared this day would come. GOG DL was simple, easy, solid. I never had a problem. I do not play games on the same system I download them to. I will NEVER install the Galaxy client. I am so sad to see this. GOG is not what it used to be in many ways. Sorry to see that.

Just wanted to post my POV here in the hopes that GOG will take note and think about it going forward. For some of us, a simple, clean downloader is required. GOG Downloader fit that bill perfectly.

Oh no!
First steam came up with their new ugly and bugged UI with forced ads in my libary page and now gog shuts down the way I used to download my games from here. :(

Just wanted to download some of my games with the good old downloader that I always used but unfortunately that doesn't work anymore. What a pity. It was a very useful tool, much more useful than Galaxy.

But by now GOG has a long history of making the wrong steps and I stopped caring or recommending GOG years ago.
lgogdownloader on GNU/Linux still works.
32 pages already , clearly more people want this downloader than got staff thought , pls bring it back.

Someone needs to create a wishlist item "be more transparent".

32 pages don't mean a lot. It only means that this is a controverse topic. If you count those who participate here you will see that it is often the same people telling the same things. Don't get me wrong, I would love to have to Downloader back but a thread with many people arguing back and forth if GOG did the right decision probably won't cut it. Even the wishlist entry which meanwhile has gotten quite a lot of votes is by far not enough for GOG to reconsider. Just remember back then when they introduced the integrated Galaxy installers - THAT was an echo that was impossible to ignore. All GOG is seeing right now is that they offended quite a few people and some of them might stop buying because of this. Unfortunately I don't think that GOG actually cares about those few lost sales.

It may be 32 pages for you two...for me it's "only" 13 pages so far.
