cthulhusreign: This is one of the best gems I have ever played I can't like this enough!
Good news: There is a sequel that was successfully kickstarted. Bad news: It may take a couple years to be finished. Ought to be enough time to beat Hell Temple.

Kickstarter: La-mulana 2
Sorry for the delay, I've been really sick lately. I know unknown gems are very subjective, and I appreciate all the replies. I've looked through every game mentioned here. My wishlist is seriously bloated. Replies are in order of people who posted. Not sure if people actually care what I think of the recs, but I thought I'd show you I care. <3

dtgreene: Dragon Wars
Cool! At first I was hoping it had dragons in it, given the name. ;) Not sure if it's my cup of tea (dungeon crawler?) but I'll definitely keep it in mind. Thanks for the rec!
avatar
Tannath: Psychonauts, Beyond Good and Evil, Project Eden, Magrunner: Dark Pulse. Soul Gambler
Funnily enough, I do have Psychonauts and Beyond Good and Evil. I had briefly tried both of them, but kind of put them on the back burner. But I definitely want to give them another chance. Not too fond of shooters, but I looked into the other two. :) And I had been eyeing Soul Gambler for awhile, and after your recommendation and the super cheap sale on Steam, I bought it. :D Thanks for the recs!
avatar
Marioface5: Tri: Of Friendship and Madness
Wow, that game looks so trippy and pretty! Thanks for the rec!
avatar
PaterAlf: DROD

avatar
Licurg: Sacrifice!
lol I actually own Sacrifice and tried it out. I got my butt kicked playing on the side of Tim Curry's voice I think, and put it on the back burner. No fear though, I plan to return to it someday! Thanks for the rec!
avatar
Gengar78: Freddi Fish 2
Bit too kiddie for me, I think. ;) But thanks for the rec!
avatar

avatar
theslitherydeee: King of Dragon Pass
I do own this game and tried it, but I think I got a little lost/overwhelmed. It seems very in depth, with mythology and everything, and I was confused about gameplay. But I'm definitely going to give it another try sometime. :) Thanks for the rec!

avatar
Sabin_Stargem: LaMulana
Hmm...I'm not too fond of platformers per se, but so many people in this thread also reced it. Does it have a good story, is the gameplay somehow different than other platformers? Thanks for the rec, I'll keep my eye on it!

avatar
advancedhero: Miasmata
I'm definitely intruiged by the mapping system idea, never seen that before. Added it to my wishlist for a sale, thanks for the rec!

avatar
mrkgnao: Fantasy Wars
I think I got this game for free on some such website. Haven't really played it yet, but I love the idea of playing as something other than a human (or elf, or dwarf), and being able to play as a goblin sounds cool! I'm definitely upping this on my priority list. Thanks for the rec! :)

avatar
IronArcturus: Fire Fight and Urban Assault
I looked into them some, but since they're so hard to find I don't think I'll be able to check them out. But thanks for the recs!

avatar
Telika: Giant Citizen Kabuto, Men of War, Covert Action, the Swapper, Creeper World, Divine Divinity, Master of Magic, Eschalon, Blackwell, Geneforge, Ghost Master, Evil Genius
Woo, lots of recs! I had eyed Giant before, but with your rec I'm definitely adding it to my wishlist for a sale! I don't like realistic war games at all, so I'll skip Men of War. Covert Action looked cool with spies and it being Sid Meier's, and it was on sale for really cheap with Sid Meier's Pirates, so I bought them both. Creeper World doesn't really look like my kind of game. I've heard great things about Divine Divinity, so added to my wishlist for a sale. Master of Magic was already on my wishlist, so I'll definitely consider it even more when a sale comes along again. Looked into Eschalon, didn't seem my cup of tea. I've already played the Blackwell series and love it to death! Ghosts and the supernatural are a huge plus for me, loved Joey. <3 For Geneforge, you had me at "obedient creatures" and I quickly put it on my wishlist for a sale. I love controlling creatures! XD I've played Ghost Master and loved it, definitely underrated and awesome. I own Evil Genius thanks to a generous gifter, and it does look really cool. Definitely going to move it up on my priorities. Again, thanks for the recs! <3

avatar
Roxolani: Defender's Quest
I haven't played much of tower defense games, except maybe Unholy Heights?, but I liked the premise of a librarian (I work in a library), so I added it to my wishlist. Thanks for the rec!

avatar
awalterj: Bad Mojo
I've definitely been eyeing this game for awhile, but playing as a cockroach freaks me out a bit. But it's definitely on my wishlist, and I'll give it a chance next sale. Thanks for the rec!

avatar
drealmer7: Project Eden, Geneforge Saga, Pathologic, Inquisitor (wink), Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender, Spellforce series, Shadow Man, Spycraft: The Great Game
I don't think Project Eden would be my cup of tea. For Geneforge, you had me at "obedient creatures" and I quickly put it on my wishlist for a sale. I love controlling creatures! I do own Pathologic, I love dark psychological games, and I definitely need to play this sometime. Inquisitor...nudge understood. :P After I'm finished playing through a game I have to review, I will boot it up. <3 I had Rex in a bundle sale and give him away. Now I wish I would have given him a chance. :P I own the first Spellforce, one of many in my backlog, but I'll up it's priority. Shadow Man has been on my wishlist, just waiting for a sale. Love the voodoo aspect of it. Spycraft looks really cool, wishlisted it! Thanks again for all the recs (and the gifted game!)

Starkrun: AquaNox 1 and 2, Blood 2, The Chronicles of Riddick: Assault on Dark Athena and Escape from Butcher Bay, Duke Nukem: Manhattan project, Giants: Citizen Kabuto, Jade Empire, Painkiller, Slavezero, Sanitarium!!!!!, SHOGO, Two worlds 1 and 2, Unreal 2
Woo, lots of recs! Not much into shooters, although aquanox being under water is unique. Same with Blood. I loved Pitch Black, and I've wishlisted the Chronicles of Riddick for a sale, looks very cool. And even better than those movies? That's almost hard to believe, definitely have to get it sometime. Duke doesn't seem my cup of tea, but Giants looks pretty cool and I added it to my wishlist! Jade Empire is already on my wishlist. The painkiller premise sounds interesting, but I'm not too good at shooters. I added it to my wishlist, though. I got slavezero in a bundle and gave it away, just not my cup of tea. SANITARIUM! I love that game, so twisted and deep. It really is a gem! Shogo, cool premise, bad at shooters. I own Two Worlds, just haven't gotten around to play it, so I'll move it on up in my priorities. Unreal looks cool, but I don't think it's for me. Thanks for the recs!
Sorry to double post, it wouldn't fit on one. :P

avatar
JDelekto: Tetris
I do love me some Tetris. :P

avatar
drealmer7: SiN, Cannon Fodder, Signal Ops
Hadn't heard of SiN before, plot looks pretty cool, but I'm not very good at shooters. I don't much like war games, so Cannon Fodder is probably not my cup of tea. Signal Ops looks pretty cool, even with the shooter aspect. I like stealth, and seeing multiple perspectives sounds pretty unique. Added it to my wishlist for a sale. Thanks for the recs!

avatar
LordEbu: Quarantine, Spellcross
Cool! I'll keep my eyes open for them if they ever make it to GOG. Thanks for the recs!

avatar
thejimz: Horizon Shift, Lilly Looking Through, The Swapper is an absolute mind-blower.
Horizon Shfit is probably not my cup of tea, since I don't much like shooters. Lilly Looking Through looks pretty cool, added it to my wishlist for a sale. It makes me sad how far you're down, and you were always so nice and gave away games. <3)

avatar
RWarehall: Nox, Escape Goat
Nox looks funny, I put it on my wishlist for a sale! I had seen it mentioned before. I don't think I'd play Escape Goat, but it does look funny. I always applaud games that let you play as something other than human! Thanks for the recs!

Zombie Smashers X2: Punx and Skins (2005)

It's a gory street beat-em-up with an added RPG-flavor a la River City Ransom, with zombies, ninjas, vampires, skinheads, metalheads, nazis, pirates, robots, demons, government agents and punks to smash galore! Tons of humor too!
Besides the punches and various kicks, you can also use weapons dropped by enemies, such as garbage cans, katanas, tuna, uzis, hammers, pans, swords, hooks etc and knocked down enemies.
In addition it has one of the sweetest punk/ska/electronica soundtrack ;)

Vote for it on the gog wishlist: https://www.gog.com/wishlist/games/zombie_smashers_ii

That is definitely more like it!

jamotide: Anyone got some business sim unknown gems for me? Stuff like gamebiz
avatar
Bouchart: Capitalism Plus, which is sold here on Gog.
My thoughts exactly. I remember having been really impressed beyond expectations by the first one long ago (when it was already deemed old). I don't have the present one, but I can't imagine it being really different.

dtgreene: Dragon Wars
avatar
Fantasysci5: Cool! At first I was hoping it had dragons in it, given the name. ;) Not sure if it's my cup of tea (dungeon crawler?) but I'll definitely keep it in mind. Thanks for the rec!
Dragon Wars isn't a dungeon crawler. While there are dungeons, they tend to just be a single level and aren't really the focus of the game. (Ok, there is the occasional 2-level ruin, but one of the levels is outside anyway.) The game is non-linear with an overworld, an underworld, and many areas with a lot of events in them. Also, the focus is on exploration, not combat; enemies don't drop items, instead you find them. You start in a prison town, and there are multiple ways to escape (including one that is only possible on New Game+).

There actually are dragons, but they were added late in the game's development, and you never fight a full fledged dragon. (Well, there's one you can fight, but you are not *supposed* to, and will likely have your party wiped out before you get close enough to damage her if you try. Hint: If you get into that fight, you have forgotten something.) There are some smaller enemies who can breathe fire on your party as well, but that breath attack is easily survivable.
Another recommendation but console-based: aka Dark Messiah... but going back to PC Horror: [url=https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ecuAqHk6Hoo]White Day: A Labyrinth Named School, interesting korean game that is now abandonware; SCP Containment Breach, a little more known title that has very interesting mythos surrounding it.

I'd say a lot of the games on GOG qualify as unknown gems just because of their age.
You could argue that Monkey Island is an unknown gem to a lot of current gamers because they were still a twinkle in their dad's eye when it originally came out.
Yes, the remastered edition came out, but that would have been bought by people who knew the original version.
So, if you haven't played Monkey Island like the rest of us, do! And you will see why it's such a classic. :D
