Ten of 2016’s niftiest releases and a limited selection of wonders on sale now.

2016 had its rough spots, but surely we can all agree on one thing: it's been a delightful year for video games. To cap it off, we’re putting ten great releases from this year on sale, alongside bundles of classics and modern wonders in the Goodbuy 2016 Sale!

Obviously, the hardest part has been picking just ten games. Through a particularly scientific process that may or may not have included copious amounts of eggnog and missing teeth, we have whittled down the list of GOG.com’s 10 Good Buys of 2016 (in no particular order) to:

INSIDE
The horrific, twisted, and morbidly beautiful followup to LIMBO is one of the most memorable experiences of the year and a damn fine puzzle-platformer to boot.

Owlboy
A endearing piece of pixel-art that warmed your hearts with its quirky cast of characters and unique platforming mechanics, which let you carry around those you care about.

Starbound
Recently updated and chock-full of fun activities and adventuring opportunities, Starbound is one of our year's most promising InDev graduates.

Stardew Valley
Simple, addictive, and endless, the absolute indie hit of the year (developed by just ONE guy) made us all into accomplished farmers, explorers, harvesters, and lovers.

Grim Dawn
Some here say that isometric aRPGs have a new king and that he's wearing some stunning gear, yields devastating weapons, and murders things with just a few mouseclicks.

Obduction
A spiritual successor to Myst from the magicians behind the original series, this first-person adventure transported us to stunning worlds, where the familiar and the strange collide.

Darkest Dungeon
Brutal and unforgiving, this roguelike dragged us down to the depths of despair before giving us a glimpse of hope in the form of a well-timed critical hit. Then our team died. Again.

Day of the Tentacle Remastered
Tim Shaffer's offbeat point'n'click reminded us of the art of time-travel thanks to the tastefully updated presentation now enhancing its impeccable puzzle design and timeless humour.

The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Blood and Wine
Geralt's last hurrah was a dark, whimsical, and occasionally emotional adventure in the breathtaking region of Toussaint, the perfect farewell to our battle-hardened, award-winning hero.

Shadow Tactics: Blades of the Shogun
The game that single-handedly revived the stealth/tactical genre made popular by Commandos. The amazing Japanese setting and fine-tuned gameplay definitely played a role in that.

You can also round out your collection with a selection of classics and modern gems up to 90% off, including Neverwinter Nights 2, Homeworld Remastered, Rebel Galaxy, The Elder Scrolls: Morrowind, Grim Fandango Remastered, and Fallout 1 & 2, to name a few. Plus, scratch that sudden STAR WARS itch with bundles including Rogue Squadron 3D, Battlefront II, Shadows of the Empire, Galactic Battlegrounds, Knights of the Old Republic, and more.

Plus, for the first time ever, Blood and Wine, Hearts of Stone, and the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Expansion Pass for the The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt are 40% off! If you haven't upgraded to GOTY yet, this is the best way to leave the year on a high note.

The Goodbuy 2016 Sale might not be huge, but you’re guaranteed to find plenty of awesome games to add to your collection. The sale will last until December 28, 10:59 PM UTC.
Goodbye--Good-Buy

Ohohohoho you cheeky bastards, care for a little eggnog with that rum?

I nominate Stardew Valley as the most Adequately-Hyped Game of 2016, although I think it could stand a little more (evidently) We're doing game of the year awards here right? No? Oh, we doing s'mores? Close enough. Whatever, buy Stardew Valley for ten bones, you owe it to yourself (or to someone else, gifts are cool!).

So long as your down with retro homages to 2D farm/ marriage simulators, that is. If 3D grimdarkman face-shooters are your bag, well, you're not going to find that here--not until the multi-player patch anyways.

Point_Man: I was there for that sale as well. There were plenty of games that never went on sale that i was waiting to buy. A lot. A lot of them newer games which are on sale on Steam all the time. For example I was waiting to get Terraria for the past few months i think. Constantly on sale on Steam. I don't think it's been on sale here in a long time, if not since it's launch here.

I don't understand this bundle gimmick. It would probably get GOG a lot more sales if they just put everything on sale from day 1 like Steam does. It's obviously working for them since they decided to stay with that instead of going back to the way they used to do it. When they used to have a few new games added to the sale every day like GOG. There are plenty of people who can't check these websites every day to see if the game they want to buy is on sale that day.

The current way Steam does it is the best way. Put everything on sale day 1. No bundle gimmicks where you're forced to buy an almost an entire publisher's catalog to get the discount you'd get on Steam without the gimmick or need to buy an entire bundle of games.

RWarehall: Over half of all games went on sale in the Winter Sale, 964 unique titles/DLCs/upgrades etc. We have 1825 entries of which over 30 are free or TBA.

This doesn't count the games which went on sale in the Fall sale which some publishers may not have wanted another sale so soon.

But of all entries, counting this sale, of games which were in the catalog Jan 1st, only 16 individual entries did not appear on sale this year.

Just because Terraria hasn't been on sale since the spring, doesn't mean that games here aren't regularly on sale here.
What if i miss a sale? Every big Steam sale all games are on sale. So since i missed the sale on Terraria in March i will have to wait a whole year possibly until the next sale on it? That's kinda ridiculous. I'll wait because i can't afford to buy games outside of sales anymore, i just don't see how that helps GOG. I'm sure i'm not the only one that waits for sales and having to wait a year in between games going on sale will just drive people elsewhere.

I don't want to sound like i'm demanding these games go on sale. I just don't understand, the developers/publishers dictate what games go on sale don't they? So why are publishers/developers constantly discounting their games on Steam but not GOG? Is it GOG, or some of the devs/publishers just not caring enough about GOG to coordinate with GOG for these sales like they do with Steam.

Pretty sure Steam's contract forces games to go on sale during their big sales and GoG either doesn't wish to force this or doesn't have the same pull to accomplish that. The problem is Steam has essentially a monopoly on online retail. You may be right that some publishers don't bother to waste their time on all the smaller stores for every sale.

Either way, I pointed out how only 16 items out of 1825 line items, have failed to go on sale on GoG for all of this year. This is less than 1%. Not too shabby. Just think about the people who have waited almost 4 years for Arx Fatalis to go back on sale...
How many god damn sales are you going to have? Is this not the third or fourth one in a row?

Probably one more, likely the 29th or 30th...lol...

For the record we are at 4 now. Fall, Black Friday, Winter, and Goodbuy...

They did the same thing last year where we had 5 with the "Only on GoG - Thanksgiving/Black Friday sale" along with Fall, Winter, Holidays and New Year.

"The Sales will continue until ALL the games have been sold."

CEO, GOG
I'm waiting for the "Happy New Year -- Welcome to Oblivion Sale" :-P

221bBS: Sale would make more sense if it ended on the 31st ;)
avatar
RWarehall: But if they did that, it would get in the way of their likely upcoming New Year's Sale...
Naw, It can start on the 1st :D
1) Sales are too frequent now. Money burn out...
2) Arx Fatalis on Sale... WOW. And too late. Already have it... :-)
3) Too many awesome releases... see 1) ;-)

joppo: But there is such a distinction! Those groups of games where you can receive an additional discount for grabbing most or all games are called bundles, but those groups that are mere lists of games aimed at giving them visibility are called Collections. It has been like this at least in the last sale, especially with those "[Some youtuber]'s collection".

The problem is, GOG never mentioned this distinction anywhere. Collections and bundles are presented side by side so it gets very easy to mix them up as well.
And the even bigger problem is that they do not use these names consistently, like the two Nordic "bundles" with no additional discount during the last sale. ;)
Picked up and I'm playing Day of the Tentacle, and you'll have to forgive someone who knows shit about who owns rights to what, but has there ever been a thought given to remastering Maniac Mansion?

Doesn't Day of the Tentacle include Maniac Mansion?

It's in there somewhere but it's not remastered.

Ah. A pity. But that's good to know, I was thinking about maybe buying it. Either that or The Saboteur and I can't make up my mind.

I've only played the first 10 minutes of Saboteur but so far it's great.

And as for Maniac Mansion, the remastered thing doesn't bother me, having to go to Ed's room every time I want to play it does. :P I'd like a stand alone version of the game.
