It seems no one mentioned that Arcanum: Of Steamworks and Magick Obscura can be played without Steam. I might be wrong about it, but my friend recently mentioned that he was able to copy the game files to his internet-free (and Steam-free as well) notebook and play. :)
I remember playing Puzzle Quest: Challenge of the Warlords client-free before (and it's indeed on the list), but somehow I can't launch it without the client anymore these days. Wonder what happened.

It might have been updated. Try to downgrade to an older version.

I play the game in offline mode these days since 2019, and it hasn't seen any news of updates for years. Maybe it's something about my system. Maybe someone else who owns this game can confirm it.

pedrovay2003: Okay, we're all updated again. Sorry for the delay, I've been sick lately. :/

As for the Half-Life thing, I don't know anything about Xash3D; can someone with more knowledge shed some light? Is it an official thing, or does it even matter? Should it be added to the wiki anyway? Thanks for any input in advance!

vidsgame: As far as I know, it's an engine claiming to have several advantages over the original Half-Life engine.

Here's the ModDB page: https://www.moddb.com/engines/xash3d-engine

I have tested it and can confirm that it does work and Half-Life works just fine without Steam. It's an unofficial mod as far I as I could tell and it does indeed allow you to play Half-Life without the client. However, I think Jonathan? and I have tested but I'm unable to speak for anyone else who has tested it.

As far as I know, it seems it's the only way to get the original Half-Life running without Steam.

Edit: Took out the Github page, as it appears that version is Android only.
SmartSteamEmu is the cleanest way unless you have the pre-SDL2 ver of Steam Half-Life which can run offline using a switch similiar to how the HL2 engine games can.
OK, long post alert...

1. Grim Fandango Remastered also works in Windows (it's already marked as DRM-Free for Linux but ? for Windows).

2. Given their popularity, is it worth adding a link to Doom Classic and Heretic + Hexen games in the DOSBox section pointing towards the most popular source-port GZDoom? This is by far how most people play them today and it adds a native Linux & Mac method. Currently it looks like you can't play them under Linux at all which is misleading.

3. I don't know if it's worth creating a separate section for this but there are a lot of ScummVM compatible games either missing or are marked as ? for one platform but not another, that I think you can safely add as DRM-Free for both Windows & Linux simply because ScummVM accesses the data files directly completely bypassing any included .EXE's (including any potential Steamworks / CEG). Eg:-

- Big Thinkers First Grade
- Big Thinkers Kindergarten
- Fatty Bear's Birthday Surprise
- Freddi Fish 1: The Case of the Missing Kelp Seeds
- Freddi Fish 2: The Case of the Haunted Schoolhouse
- Freddi Fish 3: The Case of the Stolen Conch Shell
- Freddi Fish 4: The Case of the Hogfish Rustlers of Briny Gulch
- Freddi Fish 5: The Case of the Creature of Coral Cove
- I Have No Mouse And I Must Scream
- Indiana Jones & The Last Crusade
- Indiana Jones & The Fate of Atlantis
- Inherit the Earth: Quest for the Orb
- King's Quest Collection
- Leisure Suit Larry 1, 2, 3, 5, 6 & 7
- Let's Explore the Airport with Buzzy
- Let's Explore the Farm with Buzzy
- Let's Explore the Jungle with Buzzy
- Loom
- Myst: Masterpiece Edition
- Pajama Sam 1: No Need to Hide When It's Dark Outside
- Pajama Sam 2: Thunder and Lightning Aren't so Frightening
- Pajama Sam 3: You Are What You Eat From Your Head to Your Feet
- Pajama Sam's Lost & Found
- Phantasmagoria
- Phantasmagoria 2
- Police Quest Collection
- Putt-Putt & Fatty Bear's Activity Pack
- Putt-Putt and Pep's Balloon-O-Rama
- Putt-Putt and Pep's Dog on a Stick
- Putt-Putt Enters the Race
- Putt-Putt Goes to the Moon
- Putt-Putt Joins the Circus
- Putt-Putt Joins the Parade
- Putt-Putt Saves the Zoo
- Putt-Putt Travels Through Time
- Return To Zork
- Rex Nebular and the Cosmic Gender Bender
- Riven: The Sequel to Myst
- Sam & Max Hit The Road
- Space Quest Collection
- SPY Fox 1: Dry Cereal
- SPY Fox 2: Some Assembly Required
- SPY Fox 3: Operation Ozone
- SPY Fox in Cheese Chase
- SPY Fox in Hold the Mustard
- Starship Titanic
- The Dig
- The Journeyman Project 1 Pegasus Prime
- Toonstruck
- Zak McKracken and the Alien Mindbenders
- Zork: Grand Inquisitor
- Zork Nemesis: The Forbidden Lands

All these games on Steam should play DRM-Free under both Windows & Linux under ScummVM. The list of actual data-files required per game can be found here:-
https://wiki.scummvm.org/index.php/Datafiles
https://www.scummvm.org/compatibility/

Some of these games are already listed but misleading. Eg, Kings & Space Quest Collections are under "DOSBox" section as "Windows but n/a for Linux". However, if they run under ScummVM for Linux (without WINE) then they clearly are Linux compatible (which is something you've already done for Leisure Suit Larry 1-7 games in the general section).

The games you mentioned here seem to be using DOSBox on Steam, so keeping them separate from games using ScummVM (like Humongous Entertainment games) would be a good idea.

Of course for those who don't know, it might be worth mentioning which games can be run on ScummVM too, like with an asterisk, "ScummVM" text, or something.

Also in some rare cases there are OS specific issues with some games and ScummVM, so assuming that all games that run flawlessly under one OS will run as smoothly under another OS can be misleading, although in most cases that's how it goes.
Vikings - Wolves of Midgard will run perfectly fine without the Steam client, provided you use the Steam_appid.txt trick (404590). Tested on Windows 10.

Take a look at the list and you might realize that you are wrong. Might be different in case you only consider AAA games to be popular although even some of those don't use DRM.
Joe Dever's Lone Wolf HD Remastered will run perfectly fine without the Steam client, provided you use the Steam_appid.txt trick (279440). Tested on Windows 10.

Confirmed DRM-Free:-

- Shadwen (Windows). Both 32 & 64 bit versions work. Currently listed under steam_appid.txt trick for Linux however the latest Windows build didn't seem to have nor need that file.

Refused to start no matter what (all three threw up error messages, and even the steam_appid.txt trick doesn't work):-

- Escape Goat 2 (Windows)
- Penumbra Overture (Windows)
- Penumbra Black Plague Gold Edition (Windows)

^ The Penumbra's were surprising as Amnesia & SOMA games by same dev are all DRM-Free, but they repeatedly threw up an "Application load error 5:0000065434".
One Finger Death Punch 2 will run perfectly fine without the Steam client, provided you use the Steam_appid.txt trick (980300). Tested on Windows 10.

Thank you so much for this, almighty cat. I constantly nagged the devs on Steam and recently even on discord if they are planning a DRM-free release since I have been told that it does not run without Steam ... completely forget to ask the guy that told me to try the appid trick. :)
Warhammer 40000 Legacy of Dorn: Herald of Oblivion runs Steam-free out of the box.

WinXP-32.
