muntdefems: So right now, regarding alternatives: here's one, and here's another one. :)
Those are great alternatives indeed :)
The following games all use DOSBox so they won't need any client to launch after installation:

Alien Rampage
Bubble Ghost
Central Intelligence
Chamber of the Sci-Mutant Priestess
Chaos Control
Daemonsgate
Drakkhen
ELF
Eternam
The Great Escape
Hostage: Rescue Mission
King's Table - The Legend of Ragnarok
Last Rites
Marco Polo
Mystical
Prophecy I - The Viking Child
Pushover
Sleepwalker
Spiritual Warfare and Wisdom Tree Collection
Tunnel B1*
Where Time Stood Still

*Tunnel B1 also comes with its Playstation 1 version, which also doesn't require the Steam client after installation.

All of the games were tested on Windows 10 and can be obtained for the low, low price of a single buck from Fanatical:

Is the game the full CD version with audio tracks or did they change the sound to compressed formats for the digital release like some other games did?

Looks like the real deal.

Nice. The soundtrack of this game alone is worth far more than the asked price. In case someone doesn't know: The soundtrack from Tunnel B1 is from Chris Hülsbeck who has been famous for his music since the times of the C64 and Amiga.
The Steam sale is going on so I decided to attempt to genre-rize the list.

Here is a spreadsheet of the categories defined by genre of the games. I finished 5 sections so far - Dosbox games, DRM-Free game codes, patchable games, Paradox development and Sega Emulator games.

Danmaku Unlimited 3 runs without the client.
All games work without Steam. Tested on Windows 8.1

Adelantado Trilogy Book 1
Adelantado Trilogy Book 2
Island Tribe
Island Tribe 4
Northern Tale 2
Roads of Rome
Roads of Rome 2
Viking Saga Cursed Ring
Viking Saga New World
More Linux games that worked out of the box without the client:

· Al Emmo and the Lost Dutchman's Mine
· Circa Infinity
· OVIVO
· POSTAL Redux
· SquareCells (already confirmed for Windows)
· The Last NightMary - A Lenda do Cabeça de Cuia (already confirmed for Windows)

And finally one (also already confirmed for Windows) that needed the steam_appid.txt trick in order to work on Linux:

· CrossCells
Overgrowth runs without Steam client.

Tested with latest stable release of Wine in Linux Mint 18.3.

Good to know, thanks. :)

Why didn't you test the native Linux version though?

It has one? Most games have only a Windows version so that's why I had the Steam.exe open and going down the list. I'll test that version as well. I'm willing to wager that the developer makes all his games client-free as the prequel to this game: Lugaru is also on this list but just the Linux version.

Dude, the supported OSs are indicated on the game page (see attached screencap). :P

Thanks! Yeah, I guess it'll work too. Even without the Lugaru considerations, it'd be pretty odd that a game needed the Steam client on one OS, but not on another.

It takes too many clicks to get to the store page from the library. Especially, when you're moving around files in your computer at the same time. Haha.

The Linux version is 52gb vs 20gb for the Windows version. What's going on here? I have no idea.

Anyway, yes it's really odd but there is a case. I bought Megabyte Punch thinking it could run on Windows back when I only ran Windows. On the list it says it's client free on Linux but apparently the Windows version is unable to start without Steam.
