You get a lightsaber!

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, in which you master weapons of the Jedi and face the very real temptations of the dark side, is now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Dark Forces revolutionised the early days of first person shooting. Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II improved on the experience in almost every imaginable regard, as the series once again established a significant milestone in 3D action gaming. If the words "You get a lightsaber" weren't enough to get you hyped about this title back in the day, then the truly-3D environments and models, RPG elements, and unprecedented freedom of movement complemented by a varied arsenal of weapons and Force powers would have done it.

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a must-play for gamers looking to experience or relive gaming history, and the GOG.com treatment now makes this easier than ever. At the end of the day, it's a game that allows you to discover the Force entirely on your own - to walk the light path of a Jedi hero, or to unlock the sheer destructive power of the dark side - and that is just plain awesome.

Get your lightsaber and master the Force in Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours, until Friday, January 30 at 1:59 PM GMT.

Treasure: I'm thinking about getting this game-seems more interesting than the first one! So, two questions:
1) Most important: Can I save anytime during the game or there are checkpoints or I can only save at the start of a level? (I prefer being able to save anytime...)
You can save anywhere, from what I see.

avatar
Treasure: And a bonus question regarding the 1st game: I read somewhere (or saw in a youtube video, can't remember...) that in the 1st game one can only save at the beginning of each level. Is that correct?

Thanks in advance for your help. :-)
Yes, that's correct. The first game doesn't feature any kind of mid-level saving. If you lose all your lives in one stage, you'll need to restart the level.

Great! I prefer not to lose progress in case I have to leave the game (or lose my lives or anything else), so being able to save anytime is a big plus! (And the lack of this feature is a big minus regarding the 1st game) And especially considering the fact the levels of this game seem to be quite big!
Regarding my second question, I suppose since both games are basically shooters/action games (and shooters aren't known for having complex plots...), I'll just make up a possible previous plot or read the wikipedia article. No big deal...
I'll need to do some more thinking before I commit myself (I don't like taking rushed decisions...) but anyways, thanks a lot for your help, Grargar!

How dare you?!
The plot is amazingly complex.
The empire is up to no good and you have to stop them and.. well that's pretty much it really.

Well maybe from the point of view of this game but if you look at the entire series with Kyle, he starts off as a rogue mercenary type and ends up as a Jedi Knight (sorry about the spoiler but the game is really old so that's your own fault for not knowing :P) and so that makes DF 2 a pretty large chunk of character transition. Oh it's not quite Kafka, but it merits mention. :D

In Dark Forces Kyle Katarn is a free agent working for the rebels (for money) that helps them stop some plans of the Empire.
In this game we find out that Kyle has a past we did not know about.

There.

I was just talking about the first one since he/she seemed to be thinking about skipping it.
The second one does have a bit more of a plot, but I was trying not to spoil it.

So, to summarize, the plot is "rogue mercenary type who works for the rebels(for money)" (in the 1st game-btw, normally wouldn't the Empire be able to pay him more-seeing as they're an Empire and all..I guess they were just cheapskates :P) and in the 2nd game we have an "unexpected" change with Kyle finding out about a hidden (possibly family related) past and eventually becoming a Jedi knight (and no, that wasn't much of a spoiler, since the Jedi Knight part is in the very title of the game). Not much of a plot, but still good to know before I start the game (if I buy it that is...) Thanks a lot both of you, madth3 and TinyE!

Well, I consider that Dark Forces has a plot. It was one of the things that I loved about that game (Unlike Doom, Heretic, etc)
:)

It's just that the plot is limited to one big adventure, it doesn't have backstory for the characters and it has no consecuences in the following games.

Oh, Kyle knew about his past but he's a mysterious guy so he did not told anyone.

I did not got Dark Forces as I played it a lot back in the day and I'm afraid it might feel too old but this one I bought. And so should you.

Lovely to know this release functions way better than Steam's, which I got in a bundle a while ago. People can't not debate whether Jedi Knight or Jedi Outcast's better, so having the option to play both adequately (if on different services) helps a lot.

Didn't you see 'Clerks'? The Empire was busy giving all their money to independent contractors in order to finish the 2nd Death Star on time. You think the average Storm Trooper knows how to install a toilet!? All they know is wearing white and blasting stuff.

Assuming they can actually hit it in the first place.
OK. Tryed to install the JKE mod. But to work, you need to apply the Unofficial patch.

But if you do that, the JK.EXE gets corrupted. So make a backup copy if you try the modification.

* * *

Anyway, I found on the STEAM forum a post:
http://forums.steampowered.com/forums/showthread.php?t=1873332

Tryed the steps, that are written in the last two posts, but nothing worked so far.
It seem like that GOG patched the JK.EXE ... somehow, so the mods got unusable.

I tryed to make a "mod", then "Mods", "MOD" and also "Mod" folder in the JK installation folder, the default is
C:\GOG Games\Star Wars Jedi Knight - Dark Forces 2

Moved the JKE.gob file into that folder.

And the last thing I did was to try to run it with a shortcut made out of JK.EXE with following launch option:
-path MOD

... Well, it doesn't work. Yet.

I've get an ERROR: Could not load level message.

* * *

Hope to find a solution in the future.

* * *

Well at least the music and menus/videos in fullscreen are working.

Absolutely unbelievable!

Thanks guy, will definitely pick this up :o

This last two weeks are unbelievable - full of awe, exactly like when you released System Shock 2 :)
