You get a lightsaber!

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, in which you master weapons of the Jedi and face the very real temptations of the dark side, is now available for Windows, DRM-free on GOG.com with a 20% launch discount.

Dark Forces revolutionised the early days of first person shooting. Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II improved on the experience in almost every imaginable regard, as the series once again established a significant milestone in 3D action gaming. If the words "You get a lightsaber" weren't enough to get you hyped about this title back in the day, then the truly-3D environments and models, RPG elements, and unprecedented freedom of movement complemented by a varied arsenal of weapons and Force powers would have done it.

Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II is a must-play for gamers looking to experience or relive gaming history, and the GOG.com treatment now makes this easier than ever. At the end of the day, it's a game that allows you to discover the Force entirely on your own - to walk the light path of a Jedi hero, or to unlock the sheer destructive power of the dark side - and that is just plain awesome.

Get your lightsaber and master the Force in Star Wars™ Jedi Knight: Dark Forces II, available now, DRM-free on GOG.com. The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours, until Friday, January 30 at 1:59 PM GMT.

xxxIndyxxx: Is that in the so called advanced display tab because my game is missing that tab....
Yes, it is. Are you sure you don't have access to it? Should be bottom center in the display options. Seeing as this is hard-coded part of the game it seems odd that it wouldn't exist for some.

IronArcturus: Well is there a way to force the game to run in a window? I'd rather not have to hard boot my computer over and over again.
Can you run the game's JK.exe from the game's directory itself or it crashes as well?

I only get this option when I add the "-displayconfig" parameter.

GOG's version of JK.exe only shows a black screen and it crashes the computer. I'm trying to find patches for this program to make it work, but so far I haven't had any luck. I just wish I could get the game to run in a window, or to run at all. :-/

I still suggest that you send a ticket to support.

Add -displayconfig as a parameter to the existing shortcut, or create a new one if it doesn't work.

madth3: In Dark Forces Kyle Katarn is a free agent working for the rebels (for money) that helps them stop some plans of the Empire.
In this game we find out that Kyle has a past we did not know about.

There.

Treasure: So, to summarize, the plot is "rogue mercenary type who works for the rebels(for money)" (in the 1st game-btw, normally wouldn't the Empire be able to pay him more-seeing as they're an Empire and all..I guess they were just cheapskates :P) and in the 2nd game we have an "unexpected" change with Kyle finding out about a hidden (possibly family related) past and eventually becoming a Jedi knight (and no, that wasn't much of a spoiler, since the Jedi Knight part is in the very title of the game). Not much of a plot, but still good to know before I start the game (if I buy it that is...) Thanks a lot both of you, madth3 and TinyE!
Gametime is just after the films so it's Imperial remnant vs new republic(with kyle being an ex stormtrooper), so the who has more money thing not a big deal. Imo the main storyline for df2(and 3/outcast) are much better than those for the kotor games and kotor, shall we say, borrowed heavyly from df2 for its main storyline. But this is an fps with rpg elements rather than an rpg(lite) so to a certain extnent it's apples and oranges.

I will add that in the jedi knight trilogy you ar much more the main character rather than a random person and this especially shows when it comes to jedi powers. Also this is much more 'star wars' than the kotor games as it has fewer degrees of seperation, you can even eveedrop on stormtrooper conversations.

P.S. I only played 2 and 3 and you can certainly skip 1 if you want

P.P.S. If I remember correctly there's a quicksave button(might be f10)

tinyE: Didn't you see 'Clerks'? The Empire was busy giving all their money to independent contractors in order to finish the 2nd Death Star on time. You think the average Storm Trooper knows how to install a toilet!? All they know is wearing white and blasting stuff.
Nar, there will be no funding for a second Death Star

The Empire actually rejected the petition to fund a second Death Star.

But hey, seems like there are still people in the Government with a sense of humor

F4LL0UT: Anyway, I wonder if GOG were aware that CD2 included different audio tracks than CD1 and made sure that CD2's music is played after you defeat Maw.
Yes... although I'll always welcome a user-side confirmation ;)

Thank you very much for this reply! And wow, that's one amazing love for detail you've shown with this release, then! In my wildest dreams I didn't think you'd think of it (it really is a detail that few people are aware of and even fewer will notice while playing the game).

Anyway, will try to confirm this, it may take a few weeks or months before I play that game this far, though.

Also: I just played the first mission and I must congratulate you. The game is in a really magnificent state. In my wildest dreams I didn't expect it to run so perfectly fine after that dreadful Steam release a few years ago. I don't quite understand why you used screenshots in software mode, though, if the game runs perfectly fine in hardware mode (at least on my machine).

Could you tell me which settings you use for Dark Forces 2? I'm still having trouble trying to get it to run on Win7. I keep getting a black screen.

Frankly I didn't have to do anything, the game ran perfectly out of the box. Running Windows 7 x64 with a GeForce GTX 560 Ti here. Two monitors, desktop resolution on the main one is 1920x1080. I uninstalled GeForce Experience a while ago which helped with tons of games, including really old ones - if you have that one installed, get rid of it ASAP. Don't know what else i could tell you.

Edit: Do you mean in-game or does the game instantly result in a black screen before you see anything (intro, main menu)? If you get a black screen in-game (when you're on the first level, I mean) turning hardware mode on (or off if it's already on) in the graphics options may do something.

I don't have anything called "GeForce Experience" installed. I only have an nVidia GT220 with the latest drivers. I've never had a GOG game give me a black screen crash before. Right now I have no way of playing the game. I'm wondering why Dark Forces 2 isn't working at all. :-/
