The one that started it all...

Star Wars™: Dark Forces, the very first FPS ever to be set in the Star Wars® universe is DRM-free for Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com with a special 20% launch discount!

When Star Wars™: Dark Forces was first released in 1995, it quickly proved to be a revolutionary title not only because it provided the most immersive Star Wars® experience to date, but also because it was one of the very earliest first person shooters to introduce design elements such as realistic multi-story structures, the freedom of movement to jump and crouch, and a well written storyline complete with beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes. The story of Dark Forces covers the humble beginnings for Kyle Katarn, an Imperial officer turned Rebel operative, who would go on to become a master force wielder in the later Jedi Knight series of games and inspire countless stories taking place in the Star Wars™ Legends universe.

Star Wars™: Dark Forces is a unique opportunity to experience the game that shaped video gaming and the Star Wars™ franchise for years to come. Specially prepared and meticulously tested on Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com! The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours until Friday, January 23, at 1:59 PM GMT.
thanks gog, on my wishlist already will get it asap!

really hope that the next wave will bring us dark forces 2 (please with the add-on and not add-on separately like on steam).

InfraSuperman: Hopefully, this cleared things up.
Great info, thanks a lot! I knew about Germany having censored versions of games, but didn't know about the whole system that is in place.

InfraSuperman: [snip]
Very interesting. Thanks for taking the time to explain all of that! +1

EDIT: Also, I find the censor-friendly alias for Wolfenstein ("dog rock", instead of "wolf stone") to be hilarious. =D

Whatever. All you folks should address your complaints via internet email to LucasArts3@aol.com.

(That was a very cute section of the manual. :)

opeter2: And how do you like these old pixel graphics? The max. resolution is 320x400 and not 640x480, if I remember correctly ...
Most of the games I have played in my life were made in the 80s and 90s, these kind of graphics make me feel comfortable and safe :)

shadowknight2814: Also, reminder about the DarkXL project for upgraded graphics, though I don't think you can finish the game in the current build: http://xlengine.com/downloads/
Ninja'ed me on this, you!

Seriously though, I really hope Lucius manages to finish that engine. I now have 3 of the four games that he lists as it is supposed to work with (others being Blood from GOG here and the free Daggerfall download from Bethesda).
I'm having a few problems with the controls. Is there anyway to customise the keys?
They are all over the place.
I've tried playing with the joystick (Logitech Extreme 3D Pro) but it just has me spinning round in circles.

There should be a shortcut called "Settings" in the game's program shortcuts. It will allow you to customize your keys there.

Thank you, it's a shame that there isn't an option to have view up and down on the mouse.

^Agreed. Awkward default setup, but I'm slowly making it work without any remapping so far.

Masochists, ho! =P Seriously, the original layout is just painful. Why subject yourself to such torture? Plus, using the mouse for only turning/shooting is almost a must. I never quite got why these old games tried to give us mouse-move by default. What an awful decision.

I pretty much changed everything I could with the controls, and I can easily run rings around stormtroopers, which is kind of a must in later levels if you want to survive on medium or hard difficulty.

Agreed. I'm using the mouse for turning and shooting, wasd for moving, space for jumping, and E for nudging/activating. Works good for me.

Point taken. :) I'm a stubborn bastard, but you and tinyE already have me convinced.

Ditto. I also have R and F assigned to look up and down respectively, as that can come in very handy when trying to blast foes on different elevation levels. If only I could reassign the recenter button, which is stuck on numpad 5, I'd be golden... Unfortunately every time I try to do DOSBOX's internal key config it crashes the game. I'll live though. ;)
never played the first, but loved the second - will be sure to pick this up at some point in time
