The one that started it all...

Star Wars™: Dark Forces, the very first FPS ever to be set in the Star Wars® universe is DRM-free for Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com with a special 20% launch discount!

When Star Wars™: Dark Forces was first released in 1995, it quickly proved to be a revolutionary title not only because it provided the most immersive Star Wars® experience to date, but also because it was one of the very earliest first person shooters to introduce design elements such as realistic multi-story structures, the freedom of movement to jump and crouch, and a well written storyline complete with beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes. The story of Dark Forces covers the humble beginnings for Kyle Katarn, an Imperial officer turned Rebel operative, who would go on to become a master force wielder in the later Jedi Knight series of games and inspire countless stories taking place in the Star Wars™ Legends universe.

Star Wars™: Dark Forces is a unique opportunity to experience the game that shaped video gaming and the Star Wars™ franchise for years to come. Specially prepared and meticulously tested on Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com! The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours until Friday, January 23, at 1:59 PM GMT.

JudasIscariot: All those issues you listed, well, they did not occur while testing the game so unless you have some strange configuration everything should run like butter :D
Your butter runs? I keep mine in the fridge...

Of course. If the fridge wasn't running, the butter would be. Goddamn lazy out-of-shape butter getting the fridge to do its running for it. Are you saying Dark Forces should run like my fridge?

Yes and you should catch it once it starts running :P

Besides, my earlier phrasing was shorthand for "running as smooth as butter" :P

I know, I'm just messing with you Judas ;-)

It's cool just know that I like to mess back :P

Of course, that's what makes it fun :-)

In my defense, I'll say that I'm the son of a language teacher. We tend to be a certain degree of grammar nazi due to our upbringing ;-)

Then you'd hate talking to me IRL as I tend to butcher the English language a bit when I get pissed or enthused about something :D
Awesome! Here's hoping that GOG will add the Jedi Knight games up shortly. I am missing my second Jedi Knight disc and have them all on steam, but I will gladly buy them again here.

InfraSuperman: Fun Fact: This game was actually censored in Germany, though they only changed some bits of text in order to make them sound "less violent". For example, any reference to Kyle Katarn's "blaster pistol" was turned into "tranquilizer gun".
Not that it helped the game. It was blacklisted in Germany for being "youth endangering" anyway.
Tranquilizer gun, LOL. When you say blacklisted, was it not available for sale even with the edits?
Instabought :)

Someplace I have a boxed copy of this - now I'll never have to dig it out :)

madth3: I remember that on easy you got plenty of medkits and shields. Generally, I don't remember it as hard except on some levels[..]
avatar
phaolo: Well, obviously on easy it's.. easier! :P
I played on medium, as usual.
On Hard setting the last few missions are extremely difficult, especially fighting against the Trandoshans and Dark Troopers. I'm planning a Dark Forces -> Jedi Knight + MotS -> Jedi Outcast -> Jedi Academy marathon to challenge my inner Jedi skills :)

phaolo: This is a great FPS game, but beware:
- you cannot save during each of those long levels :O
- you have limited lives for all the campaign.
- it's hard! Explosions and certain long-range weapon can kill you fast.
- some pits or long falls are insta-death.

But the satisfaction to fight the empire face to face is worth it! :D
Yes, despite being an old game, it somehow manages you to not simply act as Kyle Katarn, but be Kyle Katarn. The levels are extremely well designed and immersive. You feel there's a purpose to all, not just mind-less shooting. The missions are varied, long and create a great sense of acomplishment upon completion. Also it's hard as hell, on the "high" difficulty, especially on the last 4-5 missions.

And the third insta-bought of the releases has been completed!

A huge thank-you to Disney and LucasArts for being willing to put their wares up here, and GOG for doing its part in making it happen!

Depressingly, the creators were quoted as saying it was "just a Doom clone". It wasn't, it REALLY wasn't... Mutch too intelligently designed to be just a Doom clone.

Also, reminder about the DarkXL project for upgraded graphics, though I don't think you can finish the game in the current build: http://xlengine.com/downloads/

I don't dare imagine playing it on hard.. O_o'
