The one that started it all...

Star Wars™: Dark Forces, the very first FPS ever to be set in the Star Wars® universe is DRM-free for Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com with a special 20% launch discount!

When Star Wars™: Dark Forces was first released in 1995, it quickly proved to be a revolutionary title not only because it provided the most immersive Star Wars® experience to date, but also because it was one of the very earliest first person shooters to introduce design elements such as realistic multi-story structures, the freedom of movement to jump and crouch, and a well written storyline complete with beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes. The story of Dark Forces covers the humble beginnings for Kyle Katarn, an Imperial officer turned Rebel operative, who would go on to become a master force wielder in the later Jedi Knight series of games and inspire countless stories taking place in the Star Wars™ Legends universe.

Star Wars™: Dark Forces is a unique opportunity to experience the game that shaped video gaming and the Star Wars™ franchise for years to come. Specially prepared and meticulously tested on Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com! The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours until Friday, January 23, at 1:59 PM GMT.

Elmofongo: PLEASE TELL ME THIS VERSION IS FIXED UP UNLIKE THE STEAM VERSION!!!?

The Steam Versions problems:

1. At the mission select menu there is a 1 minute delay when it starts. Like you click on the level you want yet nothing happens only less than a minute later the action occurs.

2. Color problems. Are they fixed? In the Steam Version when I alt tab the game to windowed mod the colors get messed up and though it goes back to normal when I alt tab back there is still some color glitches on the interface things like the numbers on the health looks like rainbows.

3. I do not know whether this is vestage of this game being a DOSBox game but the framerate feels lower than usual. How so well I watched Ancient DOS Games review of it and in the review the game looked like ran at a much better framerate.

Also lastly and this is the only thing the Steam version got right is that the game comes with its keybindings already with the standard WASD+Mouselook controls. Does this version come built like that already?

Johnmourby: To my fellow FPS fans, Buy this game! This is one of the best shooters from the early nineties. Plus it has great 8-bit(ish) renditions of the classic Star Wars tunes. Be sure to try out Dark Forces II when it comes here too.

Elmofongo: I bought it on Steam long ago a week before GOG lucasarts reveal timer began :P
All those issues you listed, well, they did not occur while testing the game so unless you have some strange configuration everything should run like butter :D
Ooooooh, the first FPS I ever played... I think this one will have a nice place in my library :)

The thing is on Steam I just played this version right out of the box I did not tinker with it. Just installed and played.

I am hoping this GOG version does not have the issues I listed when I install it and play right out of the box.

Grargar: Legally complicated, but technically easily surmountable, I guess?

Ah, okay, still doesn't sound like good news for Mac users. I think I'd always rather have a technical problem to overcome rather than a legal one.

I haven't seen the Steam version, but DOSBOX, being an emulator, has some strange quirks on some individual machines. But we will gladly help you resolve any issues you might encounter: ourselves, we have tried to make everything we can to deliver you a playable and fun game ;)

Have not purchased it yet. And this game is just 1 dollar away from me purchasing it. I have $3.40 on my card right now And this is $4.79. So close yet so far.

Cannot wait to get paid next month.
I loved this game back in the day.
I played it enough that I don't know if I would be playing it again sometime...

What I just now said to Judas,

We will just have to wait for other customers reports on it.
This is a great FPS game, but beware:
- you cannot save during each of those long levels :O
- you have limited lives for all the campaign.
- it's hard! Explosions and certain long-range weapon can kill you fast.
- some pits or long falls are insta-death.

But the satisfaction to fight the empire face to face is worth it! :D

If I remember correctly there was a floppy version and a CD-ROM version, The CD version had speech--does the GOG version have speech?
I was really looking forward to this one, unfortunately, I need some time to not buy things and recover funds. Besides classes are starting back up taking up a lot of time. Oh well, maybe closer to spring break or something like that.
Ah, Dark Forces, one of the best old FPSs, the only problem to me is the impossibility to save during missions. Hope the rest of the series soon follows (and GOG manage to have a solution for the soundtrack of Jedi Knight, which is CD-audio)
It's not Jedi Knight, but hopefully, that one will be next.

Anyway, congratulations on some neat new releases!

Don't give up, at least for the sequels there will maybe a solution in the future ;-)

Reason: http://www.aspyr.com/categories/star-wars
Hope: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/aspyr_on_gog

Edit: Unfortunately that's not a solution for the original Dark Forces, as it seems Aspyr also has no distribtion right for it. So Boxer is the way to go.
