The one that started it all...

Star Wars™: Dark Forces, the very first FPS ever to be set in the Star Wars® universe is DRM-free for Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com with a special 20% launch discount!

When Star Wars™: Dark Forces was first released in 1995, it quickly proved to be a revolutionary title not only because it provided the most immersive Star Wars® experience to date, but also because it was one of the very earliest first person shooters to introduce design elements such as realistic multi-story structures, the freedom of movement to jump and crouch, and a well written storyline complete with beautiful pre-rendered cutscenes. The story of Dark Forces covers the humble beginnings for Kyle Katarn, an Imperial officer turned Rebel operative, who would go on to become a master force wielder in the later Jedi Knight series of games and inspire countless stories taking place in the Star Wars™ Legends universe.

Star Wars™: Dark Forces is a unique opportunity to experience the game that shaped video gaming and the Star Wars™ franchise for years to come. Specially prepared and meticulously tested on Windows and Linux, now on GOG.com! The 20% launch discount will last for 72 hours until Friday, January 23, at 1:59 PM GMT.
Very nice, of course I have it DRM-free on Steam so I'll wait for a nice sale.
But very nice release.
Dark Forces 1 was a cool game, but will GOG be getting Dark Forces 2 as well?

There is a countdown that will end in 2 days in the main page. Maybe when it ends?

Oh, I just noticed that timer now. Yeah, that would be really cool if they could get Dark Forces 2. Or maybe Outlaws? :P
Will probably get it :) I remember well playing this on Mac OS when I was a child. The Mac version had better music quality
Thank you for releasing this excellent game.

This was my Doom, to me there is no greater first person shooter than Dark Forces. Again, thank you.

yyahoo: Ah, okay, still doesn't sound like good news for Mac users. I think I'd always rather have a technical problem to overcome rather than a legal one.

DukeNukemForever: Don't give up, at least for the sequels there will maybe a solution in the future ;-)

Hope: http://www.gog.com/forum/general/aspyr_on_gog

Edit: Unfortunately that's not a solution for the original Dark Forces, as it seems Aspyr also has no distribtion right for it. So Boxer is the way to go.
Oh, just to be clear, I'm not a Mac user. I was just curious (and initially a little confused) about the reasoning behind the lack of a Mac version.
Dear GOG and Disney,
Thank you thank you thank you thank you thank you!

Dark Forces is one of my all time favorite FPS games EVAR! I've still got my carefully preserved big box copy and strategy guide, I was in the mood the other day to install it but I just couldn't be arsed to mount the iso in DOSBox, I'm so glad this is here. Some of the player made levels are very good too, my favorite is TIE Defender Base, which y'all can find here:

Fun Fact: This game was actually censored in Germany, though they only changed some bits of text in order to make them sound "less violent". For example, any reference to Kyle Katarn's "blaster pistol" was turned into "tranquilizer gun".
Not that it helped the game. It was blacklisted in Germany for being "youth endangering" anyway.

phaolo: This is a great FPS game, but beware:

- it's hard! Explosions and certain long-range weapon can kill you fast.
I remember that on easy you got plenty of medkits and shields. Generally, I don't remember it as hard except on some levels. Or perhaps I did not mind going through a mission again. :-)
Re: lives, you'll get a vanilla stock of lives back if you ever run out during the campaign. This game's challenging and the level design's occasionally unfair (still can't get over Nar Shaddaa), but I think lives are rather easy to get and keep for the most part. Just be careful jumping around environments, because this FPS was one of the first with an emphasis on platforming and bottomless areas in maps. Not sure if Dark Forces was the first of its kind focused around clearing objectives beyond killing all enemies, but for a game of its age I was really impressed when I cleared it last year. Used Boxer to play the files I got from Steam...I'm assuming GOG's just emulating this with DOSBox, so problems like on Steam could be unlikely.

I played on medium, as usual.

Awesome! I was waiting for this one. :)

One more game from my steam library released on gog.
At this rate maybe I can free myself of steam once and for all!
Except for games from giveaways that is. ;)
Fuck yeah! While I love the Jedi Knight games, I like this just as much for being a straight-forward shooter in the SW universe. Mow down them Stormtroopers! ;)

Pssh. Silly Germans.
Good release, still have the original boxed game. Dark Forces is my favourite of the series followed by the original Jedi Knight, Mysteries of the Sith, which was surprising good; and Jedi Outcast. Jedi Academy I thought was garbage, too much emphasis on the Jedi's. Here's a great idea, let put the player against five jedi's and see what he does. Easy, just run past them all and exit the level...great design...

For those who do pickup Dark Forces, don't forget to search for the user made additional missions. Some of them are pretty good.
