Visual Novels have arrived on GOG.com! Our first selection includes acclaimed games, revered for their intricate artwork and stimulating stories, up to 66% off until May 29, 1pm UTC.

Higurashi When They Cry Chapters 1-5 (25% off): Spawning a popular anime and manga series, Higurashi is a "sound novel", where meticulously designed audio plays a crucial part in these unique stories. Chapters 1-5 are available today, with Chapter 6 slated for release in the near future.

One thing that really pisses me off about this. Whenever Tuesday and Thursday come around, all of us hoping for Skyrim or BioShock or something are going to have to settle for one of these things being that day's release.

I must prepare myself for disappointment.

Sakura Dungeon is the only thing in that series worth playing. And I wouldn't mind seeing Loren here, though some of the other WW games I don't think would be a good fit.

tibs210: As a fan of the visual novel genre I just want to say a thank you to GOG for implementing it. Granted, like a lot of game genres their's a lot, and I do mean A LOT of trash out their, and even more crappy H-VN games, but their's some damn fine stories out their too. It's a genre that's always been a guilty pleasure of mine, and I look forward to seeing more of these titles come to the platform.

That being said, I do have a request. It's not for a game, but for three tags specifically for this new (to this platform) genre. Would you kindly add the following genre tags:
1) Non-Kinetic = This is the type of visual novel that actually has some gameplay, whether it be just picking A or B, or something more deeper. This can be anything from the current "Sunrider Academy" or something like Danganronpa.
2) Kinetic = This is the opposite of the Non-Kinetic genre. These are purely linear, and don't have any gameplay at all bar the button press to continue the story. This is personally a genre I don't play, and as such don't have many examples that immediatly come to mind. I think "eden*" would be such a game.
3) H-Game = This is just straight up porn. It could either be Kinetic or Non-Kinetic, but the acual purpose is just for masterbation, whether it panders to the male or female audience. It's less interested in telling an interesting story, and more intent on delivering fan-service, and often include over-the-top sexual content. This sub-genre is way too big, and is often what people think of when people think of VNs, often giving the genre a bad name.
Problem with the last Tag is that there are also VNs with H-content which actually also tell very good stories (F/SN, Grisaia, Ayakashibito, and many more), you'd have to Split it into 2 Tags to avoid confusion

"Let's sell it, someone's gonna like it" is what brought shovelware to Steam. And that's the main reason I don't support Steam anymore, it's even more important than DRM for me.

People need to be exposed to some good visual novels without all of the blatant low-effort pornography garbage that flooded Steam VN library.

Bad games or very average games cannot be stopped from arriving, i've seen some latest games arrive that had pretty average reviews elsewhere.

Trying to get a very large number of games might include some games that will be 'meh'
they have to be carefull not to become a Steam cause Steam is pretty meh , if you exclude all the AAA games and big titles and licences, you have a lot of meh, and tons of shovel ware at Steam.

lol, i was typing about the same regarding Steam shovelware ............ , but i'm a slow typer so ....
i agree with it, Steam at least 45% shovelware ... like i said: if Steam did not had the AAA games and the classic games it would be Steam Shovel....

Regarding the "Let's sell it, someone's gonna like it" which GOG did not like at first, all the talk about niche ....
seems a form of niche is okay when it sells .....
Anyway .... i fear this addition might slow down the arrival of good old games the few that arrived are 3d or fpp so basically nothing arrived for me :D
Nightlong seems to be on an old abadonedgames site, seems it works .... gonna play the game to see how well it works.... or i could wait till summersale at shovel steam uh at Steam i mean and maybe i can get a few dozen casualgames which will be hard cause i already own 1200 ( retail and digital only together) games :D
but i can always look :D

I don't usually try to get a game on, but I'd be very happy if GoG would carry We Know the Devil. It's currently available solely via a website version or Steam. I'd love to have an offline version with DRM.

Children, even if drawn, should not be naked in a game, visual novel, or any other kind of media. One of the "game" trailers gives me the impression that some of the girls are naked. None of the girls look legal and some of them look very far from legal.

Glad to see some VNs hitting here. Always good to see more DRM free products on other storefronts. I kind of figured most people wouldn't be into them given GOGs community, but those kinds of things happen. I'm hoping to see some more higher quality, non-spakin-it focused ones here as time goes on, as well (not implying that what was gotten is that, I'm just saying more in addendum). We sort of already do with things like The Silver Case but I'd definitely like to see others.

Come on mangaGamer! PLEASE BRING OVER DA CAPO AND EF SERIES! and....... Go! Go! Nippon!..... I got a soft spot for that one.... ^_^

That's a valid point in most cases (visual novel are somewaht like clicker games in the gameplay department, click to advance to a new chunk of text). Besides everyone's entitled to their own opinion.

Personaly I prefer storydriven games and visual novels boil down to: story + artwork and music.

I'm not sure if it's sensible to be against an option though. If you don't like them, you can igrone them.

This is probably a bad example, but let's try it notheless.
I don't like Facebook and don't use it because your posts are stored as sellable information on it and can easily be sold to the highest bidder if the owner chooses to sell it.
Obviously I'm not going to use the option to log into GOG via Facebook.
But if other people want to have that option I don't see why not. It's their choice to use it and has nothing to do with me.

So we can agree to disagree.

P.S. I'm not trying to bash your opinion, I'm just adding a point to a piece of it.

Still it's a first big relese of visual novels on GOG.
I'd give it some time (and new releases) before drawing a finite conclusion.

There is also the two Stein Gate games, especially as, at least the first one, not sure about 0, is already DRM-free.
