Outlaws + A Handful of Missions: Remaster is now available for pre-order on GOG!

From the masters at Nightdive Studios comes another remaster of a timeless classic. This time, it’s the legendary Outlaws + A Handful of Missions, the western FPS that defined a genre.

Pre-order now!
Mod it then
Hello there!

Where is the german Audio? The original game has german audio. Do we get it too?

KainXVIII: Free for the original game owners, right?
avatar
SENSHOCK: Why would it be?
if they gave you every game they remastered for free they wouldn't be in business.
They literally gave me free versions of remastered Doom 1+2 and Heretic+Hexen, but i guess its just MS/Bethesda is not that stingy as Disney.

I'm not seeing the price here justified. But on a sale sometimes sure.
Then again I bought the original already.....

Can't check myself right now but according to GOGdb the classic version has/always had an offline installer for the English localisation only:
https://www.gogdb.org/product/1425302464#downloads

Probably the same for the remaster.

There's a GOG-patch for turning the international English version into the German one (audio+text) available here:

toma85: If you already own the classic Outlaws version there will be two FREE options to run the game on modern systems.

First option: You can use DREAMM.
https://dreamm.aarongiles.com/

With DREAMM you can also run the game on Linux or Mac. DREAMM also supports other LucasArts classics like Dark Forces, Shadows of the Empire or Jedi Knight.

Second option: Future versions (2.0, Nov 2025) of The Force Engine will support Outlaws.
https://theforceengine.github.io/

These are the alternatives to KEXification, AI-upscaled visuals and the price upgrade to 27€.
You don't even need ports. Just got my CD version working on Windows 10. All you need is:

1) Install the game. The 16-bit installer is a problem, but can be circumvented with this:
https://www.gog.com/forum/general/running_16bits_programs_on_64bits_windows

2) Get the D3D update for the game to make D3D show up as an option in the config tool:
https://community.pcgamingwiki.com/files/file/494-outlaws-d3d-update/

3) Use dgVoodoo to run the game in whatever graphics you like

4) Set sound in the config to use DirectSound instead of Aureal A3D Interactive (you'll get a DLL error otherwise).

5) Play the game. The only fault is the usual problem of not being able to control the volume of the CD music.

Haven't tested the GOG version yet, but I assume it works out of the box without the need to fiddle with it like the CD version?

I have mixed feelings about this trend of remasters that increase the price x10 and tend to eliminate previous versions for purchase alone.

I'd prefer both versions to be released simultaneously.
I own (and love) the original... but ~€27,- for this update seem a bit steep.
Great. Another «remaster» from ND that looks exactly like the original, with blurry videos and a $40 price tag. No thanks.

JomVanFliet: Bare-bones 1:1 remasters, sure, there's an argument, but when there's new content added/introduced on top of the remaster (new episodes, new enemies, new weapons, new mechanics, etc.) it seems only fair for the developers responsible to be compensated accordingly?
Heretic + HeXen (which I sneakingly linked in my post) received a remaster just two weeks ago. It costs 15 bucks, offers two new episodes, a remixed soundtrack and more stuff and is offered for free to owners of the original. Meanwhile, Outlaws costs 30 bucks (x5 the price of the original), offers no new content (just higher resolution/frame rates, achievements, gamepad support and some behind-the-scenes stuff), and is not offered for free (hell, there isn't even a discount for owners of the original). I wasn't going to buy it to begin with, but the price proposition is not good.

Somehow I bet that the Force Engine will be able to run the original Outlaws at around the same time this remaster gets released.

Just had a look. I’d say the remaster is mostly aimed at people who never owned or played it before — so, mainly new buyers. Originally, Outlaws was released in 1997. According to an inflation calculator, £24 today is equivalent to about £12.10 back then. So, comparatively, I don’t think that’s a bad price at all.

Isn't the original still here?

Though I'd expect a suspicious decrease in the frequency and height of the discounts it used to receive :P
Even with good games, I'm tired of remasters.

In most cases the modding community has already done the work (for free).

Instead of new IP, we get remasters jacked up in price and often originals removed (artificial inflation).

Not enjoying this trend.
Yikes, the price killed me right there, but as long as the original version stands intact, it's not a complete disaster imo. Though I agree with the already mentioned sentiment that the new buyers might not have the luxury of getting it at a fairly discounted price, since I expect little to no sale of the og version, or a price hike of some sort.

3 cheers for the forceengine, sourceports and mods that are made by lifelong fans and people who really care.
