[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog (this one)
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic.
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

It's not all great though as I mentioned in the "Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic": Epic Games Store has a very lax privacy policy which as you might assume doesn't comply with GDPR. In my mind due to this they aren't worth the trust of giving them any personal information.

If you want to know more about this check out this Reddit post which explains this in detail.

LOL, they're basically saying "We will only respect the law if we feel like it". Good luck with that...

If you're just there to pick up the free games without using too much of the related service like I am, this shouldn't be a big issue. Epic Games lacks a social media platform, so they are already essentially hijacking a third party and applying the rules there - which in turn I would imagine would be a fight that takes care of itself eventually when the issue comes up. other than that, I don't find everything about it totally surprising.

It's by far not the first weird policy I'm aware of to exist. Valve's system isn't as bad as that either. That being said, going back to the games, all it amounts to is that it's already known that every other week there's a game posted for free, so you don't need to worry about wasting money (heck, I don't think I've even posted my CC information anyway). Once you've already signed up for the service though, you essentially already agreed to it. Consequential complaints, while valid, are a bit too late once you've already signed up. I might also say it may already extend to their games as well, like Fortnite, if you're already playing that.

Also, a neat little thing is that most of the games they have are also already on other platforms. As long as you aren't posting on wherever Epic Games establishes domain, how would they know they can legally just claim to own it anyway? This by far is restricted to wherever Epic Games actually owns the games by default, so basically you shouldn't have much issue unless you are posting content from their games - so just simply don't post such content or play their games if you don't want your info or content "stolen" for whatever reason.

Other than that, so far they've put up 4 free games you should have from day 1 by now as I have. The lesson to learn from this is that you shouldn't be dismissing the fine print when you've essentially agreed to the terms. It's important to know about it before falling for traps you shouldn't be in.

EDIT: I do see the problem when the angry mob comes in, and this explains it perfectly: https://www.reddit.com/r/Games/comments/a43dxi/the_epic_games_store_does_not_seem_to_comply_with/ebbed2b/

4? I got "Shadow Complex Remastered" in 2015 as well as "Subnautica" und "Super Meat Boy" in the recent weeks. Did I miss one in between or are you already counting "Edith Finch" although it's not free yet?

So far they gave away Subnautica and currently they are giving away Super Meat Boy. You haven't missed anything yet.

Subnautica, Super Meat Boy, and then Fortnite and UT are also free.

That, from at least 3 years ago...well, I was speaking of those off the release of the launcher that you can get from there. That should be 5 for you. I was never including any future releases in case they decide to scrap it in any given future because of the whole brouhaha over the ToS.

Ah, thanks. I'm not interested in multiplayer so that's probably why I missed "Fortnite" and UT ...

If I ever manage to get my backlog under 100 titles I might try that ... ;-)

I have played a lot of UT2004 and BattleField 2 (with expansions) in this way. I find them good for when I just want a short gaming session.

the royal trend is lame, but save the world is kind of fun in small doses, although it's not free. resource hunting is a serious pain because you'll never have enough ammo and decent guns.

You can still get them.

I'm not interested either, but they're still there. In case there's certain perks to it. They're already in enough trouble with it as it is, but free nonetheless.

Also minor correction on my part: somehow I was led to believe they had a non-existent social media platform, when in fact they exist in hubs on a per game basis. I'm sure if you've never provided valuable info anyway and just post dank memes you stole in the first place, happy time! Clearly they are not off the hook, but at least it is not as bad as it seems. Just donacdum.
