Change of pace and format for ./play.it news: instead of waiting for a big change before posting anything, I will now post news every week, no matter if there has been a lot of things happening or not since last time.

It starts today with an update post without any library update, but quite a lot of updated scripts, and of course a couple new supported games.

Since last time, a lot of scripts needed some fixes to pass some strict syntax checks added in library update 2.5.0:

A Boy and His Blob
A Good Snowman is Hard to Build
A Story About My Uncle
Anomaly 2
Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition
Baldur's Gate 2 - Enhanced Edition
Crypt of the NecroDancer
Deponia 3: Goodbye Deponia
Fran Bow
Heroes of Might and Magic III
Icewind Dale - Enhanced Edition
Invisible Inc.
Jazzpunk
J.U.L.I.A Among the Stars
Knights of Pen and Paper
Melody's Escape
Pandora: First Contact
Risk of Rain
Solar 2
Star Wars Battlefront II
The Blackwell Epiphany
The Swapper
The Whispered World
Trine
Undertale

Some other scripts got unrelated updates:

Faster Than Light
New GOG installer supported
I Have No Mouth And I Must Scream
New GOG installers supported
Trine
Add a dependency on PulseAudio, needed to get good quality audio in this game

And a bunch of new games:

Banished
Caravan
Dex
Evoland
Hammerwatch (game previously handled by ./play.it 1, now supported by ./play.it 2)
Machinarium
Puzzle Agent
Strafe
The Inner World
The Warlock of Firetop Mountain

Let’s game!
(and see you next week)

Ooooh, Banished. I've had Banished ever since it was a part of some GOG promotion. It was supposedly coming to Linux, and then, I think, cancelled. I was always looking forward to Banished, but I was waiting for the Linux port.

Either way, I'd kind of forgotten all about until now. I'll have to check it out!

Thanks for everything!

I’ve not had the time for an extended play of Banished yet, but from what I’ve tried this is a game that might really click with me ;)

By the way, this is mostly thanks to this game that we have 64-bit WINE support in ./play.it since version 2.5.0
(this was already a feature of ./play.it 1.x, but it took quite a long time before landing into ./play.it 2)

A new ./play.it version is out, let’s see right now what comes with it:
2.5.1

  * Add a patch allowing to chose wether or not the desktop files should
include the full path to the launcher script (default includes it and does
not use $PATH, so custom values for installation prefix can be used
    without further tweaking)

  * Improve patches syntax following ShellCheck feedback

  * Display an error when using an invalid value for PKG

  * Fix error displayed if calling extract_icon_from on an unsupported file
    type

  * Improve user prefix generation

  * Improve library syntax following ShellCheck feedback

Maintenance work is an endless task, and like every week a handful of scripts got updated:
Anno 1404
Improve syntax following ShellCheck feedback
Binaries
Fix dependencies list
Braveland
New GOG installer
Braveland Pirate
New GOG installer
Braveland Wizard
New GOG installer

The Night of the Rabbit

Drop support for Galaxy multiplayer installer
Undertale
New GOG installer

And of course a couple new games to once again expand you games library:
Stardew Valley
Stories: The Path of Destinies
Unmechanical

Let’s game!
This doesn't work properly in Wine yet... there are issues with textures, lighting/shadows and other graphics effects - you can even see them in the screenshot (compare it to e.g.: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=1a2o-vhBNFg&t=160s )

adamhm: (…)
We noticed that some textures and lightning effects look strange, but with no Windows at hand for comparison we settled for calling it a strange aesthetics choice ;)
Glad to know it’s just a WINE issue that would probably be fixed at some point.

Still, the game seems fully playable with WINE, if you can go past the graphics glitches.

vv221: And a bunch of new games:

Banished

Let’s game!
Great timing!! I've been waiting for this and right now Banished is matching it's best discount (not counting pinatas). :D

Thanks for keeping us informed. It is greatly appreciated.

Hello World!
This week a new library version went live, and mark the end of an arduous bug hunt that started with the 2.5.1 release…
Said bug is crushed, let’s hope it will serve as an example for future wannabe bugs:
2.5.2

  * Fix init_prefix_files crashing when some files exist in PATH_DATA or
PATH_CONFIG with no equivalent in PATH_PREFIX

As usual, quite a lot of scripts got updates:
Baldur's Gate - Enhanced Edition
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0
Baldur's Gate 2 - Enhanced Edition
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0
Binaries
Fix dependencies list
Fran Bow
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0
HuniePop
New GOG installer supported
Icewind Dale - Enhanced Edition
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0
Kyn
New GOG installer supported
Risk of Rain
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0
Robin Hood: The Legend of Sherwood
New GOG installers supported
The Book of Unwritten Tales
Installs DirectX 9 on first launch, to avoid some graphics corruption issued
Undertale
On Arch Linux, use system-provided version of libssl 1.0.0

This week we’re spoiled with a good bunch of new supported games, most of them courtesy of mortalius and mopi:
Don't Starve: Reign Of Giants
Don't Starve: Shipwrecked
Door Kickers
Dungeons 2
Fear Equation
Goetia
Hitman: Codename 47
Little Big Adventure 2
Pixel Piracy

If you understand French, the most complete ./play.it presentation to date has just been published on LinuxFR:
./play.it installe vos jeux sans prise de tete

Of course, your feebdack would be most welcome here as well as on LinuxFR ;)

And if you have suggestions of websites that would happily host an English version of this presentation, please share them here!

If I didn’t post any news last week, it’s only partly due to working on writing news article published on LinuxFR. Another reason is the great deal of work that was required to polish ./play.it 2.6, that comes with a couple nice features.

Here goes the list of evolutions since last report two weeks ago:
2.6.0

  * Add ability to build only packages for a given architecture

  * Add automatic architecture handling to print_instructions

  * New function prepare_package_layout providing a wrapper for organize_data

  * Improve sort_icons so it can be used on single .png file produced by
    convert

  * Add --dry-run switch, running tests but not extracting data nor building
    packages

  * Use a dedicated function to guess package format to build from host OS

2.5.3

  * When no supported archive is provided, add download URL to archives list

  * Fix variable leaking function scope when calling print_instructions

  * Follow symblic links when copying native game binary in user prefix

Of course, working on the library doesn’t mean maintenance work stopped, so here are the most interesting updates to existing scripts:
Binaries
Add a dependency on PulseAudio
Faster Than Light
New GOG installer supported
Pid
New GOG installer supported
Fixed saved games persistence even if the ./play.it prefix got deleted
Republique
Store saved games outside of WINE prefix
Shadowrun: Dragonfall
Add a dependency on ALSA plugins
Shadowrun: Hong Kong
Add a dependency on ALSA plugins
System Shock 2
New GOG installer supported

Adding new games went a little bit slower than usual, but kept going too. As you might notice, half of them were previously handled by ./play.it 1:
Dungeon Keeper
Heroes of Might and Magic: A Strategic Quest
Icewind Dale II
Mark of the Ninja
Memoranda
Order of the Thorne: The King's Challenge
Star Wars: Galactic Battlegrounds
Subject 13

Let’s game!
