I've already played through Papo & Yo and I had mixed feelings. It's definitely worth playing, and a steal at this price, but it isn't perfect. The premise and story were interesting but also pretty simple. I was often really amazed at how great the soundtrack is, only to be annoyed by its repetitiveness a few minutes later, when it took me longer to beat the level. The environment is pleasing to the eye, but also a little empty, and a lot of time is spent running through it all by yourself to get from point A to point B, which I guess kind of fits the theme of loneliness though. The puzzles and mechanics are awesome at first, but then they are more or less repeated in variations, and sometimes the mechanics can even get a bit frustrating, especially when Papo gets in your way (which also fits the theme pretty well, but is no fun with regard to the gameplay). There are some clipping issues and once I had to restart a level because Papo got stuck in a corner. It feels a bit like one of the better student games due to the lack of polish, but also due to its originality. The game is rather short, but in the end I was kind of glad about that. All in all I enjoyed it, the minor frustrations and occasional boredom did not manage to drown that other initial feeling of pure delight, but I don't know if I would recommend it to friends who aren't as passionate about gaming as I am and not that open when it comes to trying something different just because it has an interesting premise. Maybe a 6 or 7 as a game, an 8 for theme, atmosphere and visual design.
On another note, I bought this a while ago on the Humble Store for $4, and now I'm kind of disappointed that they didn't include the soundtrack when you can get both game and soundtrack for as little as $1.20 on IGS ... :(
Anyway, $4 wasn't that much either, so I guess I'll just buy it again for the soundtrack. I take it gifting the key to someone else would be unethical and/or against the TOS, so I should just ignore it?
Also, most games on IGS so far were DRM-free, so commenting on the fact that this one is Steam-only is valid, no matter whether one likes Steam or not and whether one likes SirPrimalform or not (as for the latter, I do though, count me among those who value his input and opinions.)
