An event like this happens only once a year – our Anniversary!

We’ve been here for 17 years; that’s quite a lot of time of making games live forever! For this occasion, we prepared something special: even though it’s our birthday, you’re the one getting gifts. Visit our store every day for a surprise!

And of course, here’s some of the deals:
Cyberpunk 2077 (-65%)
Fallout 4: Game of the Year Edition (-60%)
Heroes of Might and Magic® 3: Complete (-50%)
The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt - Complete Edition (-80%)
Kingdom Come: Deliverance II Gold Edition (-35%)
Dungeons & Dragons Neverwinter Nights 2: Enhanced Edition (-25%)
Tainted Grail: The Fall of Avalon (-10%)

…and more!

Anniversary ends on October 7th, 7 AM UTC. Check it out!

abashedcry: From my understanding it's a voluntary invitation rather than say, a court subpoena, so I can't see there being much appetite to show up for this. I could be wrong though, maybe they want to get ahead of any legislation that might hurt their long term profits.
The wording of the invitation (PDF) "requests your testimony at a hearing " and Mr. Comers explanation for the hearing on the linked site ("the CEOs ... must appear before the Oversight Committee and explain what actions they will take to ensure their platforms are not exploited for nefarious purposes") don't indicate to me that this is voluntary or just some friendly talk, but let's see what happens.

GOGmissariat: I am not aware of any other digital store offering a "you buy it you own it" proposition for the entirety of their catalog.
Not giving names, but there are at least a couple more, obviously much smaller.

alexandros050: Probably Silent Hill F will be here tomorrow along with some other games (Or maybe they decide to save Silent Hill F for the Halloween sale). Maybe it would have been better to release the crysis games the previous week where we only got some discount codes and merch store codes.
Yeah, it's just... silly to have an entire anniversary week without new releases related to said anniversary, if we get SH f tomorrow it'll probably be one of the best events GOG has ever done, but the way they spaced out things was self-defeating

Really hope we get some AAA games tommorrow ( something like Total war, Command and conquer,Hogwart Legacy or even Marvel Midnight Sun). Having only Silent Hill F would be kind of anti-climatic for me to end this sale...

By all means, do tell.

abashedcry: 10/7 is definitely Silent Hill f, what with the "fog and petals" tweet.
Dying Light 2 and Dying Light the Beast, would complete another trilogy though.

A 17th Anniversary sale only happens once...

I do not understand the appeal of horror games whatsoever.

It is likely a similar appeal of horror movies. Some people simply like to be scared. They enjoy the novelty of the adrenaline rush.

But aren't those other stores mostly selling 20+ years old shovel- and abandonware at egregious prices... and come with a storefront that hasn't been updated for decades?

I liken it to enjoying nausea. Makes no sense to me. In some ways I wish I liked them so I'd have more options but I can't get any enjoyment from being scared or disturbed.

In certain circles, it's deeper than that.

Many who are accustomed to 'em do not really get scared or disturbed. It's mainly the enjoyment of uncertainty, I think. Imagine being separated from your friend, who went for help but might already be dead, face down in the mud during a violent storm, as you frantically make your way to the basement to figure out what took the lights out. It's the feeling of there being someone in the house, or something out there in the woods. Maybe some intruder from deep beneath the earth, or from all the way across the cosmos. That uncanny possibility of being the unfortunate soul that just happens to pick up on the ringing of some cosmic telephone. It's very alluring to some.

Usually horror games, when done well, implement these concepts mechanically and have a lot of randomness to 'em. So, to play gracefully, you're always managing a strong mental model that accommodates high degrees of uncertainty. You're never supposed to know the exact state of the simulation. Player and enemy health, for example, are usually communicated in obscure ways, so you're never quite sure how much punishment you can take, or the resource cost of engaging in a confrontation.

Guess linking to a thread on this forum, even if a closed one, should be fine, so referring to the two listed as exclusively DRM-free at https://www.gog.com/forum/general/list_of_drmfree_video_games_digital_distributors/post1

By definition something sold in a store can't be abandonware. And not updating the storefront for decades, plural, would imply them having been around decades ago, so at least since 2005, which again can't be the case.
But, on that note and to get back to GOG, would have been better if they wouldn't have redesigned the storefront either. At least we have jpolgesek to thank for "resurrecting" a reminder and actually keeping it functional, even if just for the front page.

Nah, it will be the only Nihon Falcom game not on GOG, the Trails in the Sky Remake. GungHo even will deeply apologize for not taking the smallest important shop into account including Russian gamers... which has been "deleted" as a matter of a accident; it will now be restored on GOG. As a bonus: They will personally make sure "lupineshadow" will get a Futon such as the one Nihons founder was using.
