GOG GALAXY gets a new batch of features to customize your experience with the client and add some quality of life improvements.

After testing the customization of the "Recent" view on the experimental branch and applying the needed fixes, we're rolling out the feature to all GOG GALAXY users. What's it all about? Now you can add or remove widgets on the "Recent" view and move them around to your liking, and create a completely personalized experience that is tailor-fit for you.

That's not all that the Proteus update introduces to the client. For better accessibility we have placed your GOG Games Wishlist on the left sidebar, so you can keep it closer to your heart. Thanks to a separate tab listing all owned DLCs, it’s now easier to find, filter out and manage the additional content. You'll find the DLCs tab in the game's configuration window. Last but not least, we've introduced a “Check for updates“ button under the cogwheel icon, so you can check if GOG GALAXY is up to date.

The Proteus update is now available for all GOG GALAXY users – go check it out and let us know what you think.
This updated caused my GOG Galaxy to crash on loadup with it saying " GOG Galaxy Failed to Load game database ". and from what I have seen i am not the only one. Hopefully there is a fix that comes out soon to rectify this.

(and yes I know the quick fix method of deleting galaxy-2 in programdata storage)

I have been fighting this gddm thing all friggin day, and i am BEYOND pissed beyond recognition
So does this mean you finally are going to support a Linux client so I can easily and cleanly use your client on SteamDeck or do I have to keep throwing my money at other companies that provide a Linux client instead?
What a Terrible Failure of an upgrade... OK, database doesn't work. It can happen, it's beta software. I do (did) have that checkbox checked, I should expect that. Downgrade to previous beta version, or stable version, right? Nope, "current or newer galaxy version is already installed". So, uninstall and install stable. But it threatens to delete all user data, and I don't want import my library and all those hassles already described in this thread! Easy, save the storage folder and all the json config files. Changelogs or redists or webcache cannot be THAT important to keep around, right? Wrong again:

- bookmarks and manually added games are kept somewhere else. Certainly not in galaxy/storage/*. After reinstall (and deleting the db file) and restoring everything I had saved, ui is completely back to stock. Maybe %APPDATA%? Too late now
- "stable" installer installs the same beta version that doesn't work with the db. Please remind me, why DO we have that checkbox?

Maybe someone could find SQL to fix the db, it's just sqlite - but all error messages I found were extremely unhelpful to show what is wrong.

...

Gave up, clean install, import library, restore UI bookmarks and imported few games I have from somewhere else. It looked like it will try to update everything i kept back at older version - for a while. I canceled two or three updates by hand and new downloads stopped popping up. "Available updates" stable at the usual 60-ish. What a "fun" evening.

26 Games installed - Zero issues on update. No plugins used. Felt I should say something as the wall of hate was becoming insurmountable. I'd have to surmise that fellow users in my boat just don't bother reading or posting.
truthfully, I'd surmise your boat is incredibly small

Also had the same issue where GoG no longer started (and given they tie shortcuts to the launcher meant I couldn't run games unless I manually ran the executables).

No hate, but frustration - it indicates that GoG didn't test this update enough, or they changed something seemly innocuous after the beta version which triggered this. (Either that or they ignored the fact this was happened to beta users and pushed live regardless, which would be worse).

Not to mention, I was prompted to install the update and I said "later" given I'd already seen these posts. However, it then automatically installed the update on the next start of the program (no additional prompt), so I was affected regardless despite trying to avoid it. So not only did they break my install, but they also ignored my choice and installed an update that I was trying to defer until they fixed it properly.

I think a bit of criticism is entirely justified when they have broken installs for a reasonable number of people (as with anything, it'll be the people with issues who post as people rarely come along and say "no problems here") due to a lack of testing or overside or for whatever reason.

The only hate here, is coming from gog galaxy. I am not testing software here. This is not the development branch. In 10 years, no store has ever broken on an update. Normal customers will not be able to fix this and will not find the solution online.
What a horrible insinuation you just made. You are probably trying to lighten the mood. But you are doing it in such a way to denigrate everybody that took the time to inform gog galaxy that their update breaks their software and will lose them most customers.

Starkrun: Here is the fix and i will make a new post too for anyone whos update broke... also GOGdevs you need to seriously pull this update, this was not ready for primetime!

https://www.reddit.com/r/gog/comments/uchr73/psa_galaxy_20_broken_update_fix_for_those_of_you/

With Galaxy Closed, in "C:\ProgramData\GOG.com\Galaxy\storage\" delete (AND SOLELY DELETE) the "galaxy-2.0.db" file.

This is the fix!

You will have to wait for Galaxy to re-import your library...

And you will have to re-scan your installed games...

BUT, it should preserve all of your bookmarks, bookmark page configs & tags, but you will have to manually re-configure your "Notifications" and your default game install & download folders in "Installing, updating" in Galaxy settings.

Thank you this worked for me.
Thank you for this new update, you've completely broken GOG Galaxy and made it totally unusable for me and countless others. That's a pretty remarkable achievement. Yes, I'm another of the "failed to load database" error crowd. I really hope there are serious repercussions for whoever made the call to deploy the client in this state. This is unacceptable.

Big props to the community for coming up with some workarounds but unfortunately all of these community solutions aren't actually fixing the problem, they are just putting a band-aid on it. There's a core issue with the client itself that needs to be fixed by GOG, and until that happens the issue will not be properly fixed. Not to mention the probably many thousands of users that either won't come here to find the community solutions or don't have the technical confidence to use them.

This needs to be fixed by GOG NOW and we'd better not lose any of our data as a result of this.

It's my own fault really. Despite all my previous experience with galaxy bs. I too decided to click the update without checking the forums. Installation seemed to stall. tried to restart galaxy and got same failure to load library everyone else had. Tried to close. Tried to reinstall to find Galaxy is already at newest version. Tried to uninstall to find out can't uninstall because its already running. Task manager kill it. Then uninstall, restart computer, reinstall and finally manage to get the f-ing thing to at least load. Ok sign in to find GOG has to find my 800+ games in my library. whatever, thats not taking too long. Then I have to recover 125 installed games from 3 separate hard drives. Then it has to "update" about 40 of those. Worked for most of them (no surprise given that most required a 0.0 Mb download) . Failed with Fallout Tactics and Book of Unwritten Tales. After retrying those to no avail, finally just thought the hell with it and uninstalled those. (manually, not through Galaxy. I learned my lesson on that with previous versions). 2 hours fighting with this and I'm done.

I genuinely feel for all the other users that have had the similar issues. All I want in a client is a simple way to sort and PLAY my games that I have purchased. Not to fix their obviously broken updates that are even more disturbing that it seems to be a known issue that they will force on all their users just like when they "updated" to 2.0.

I have been a longtime, steadfast defender and supporter of GOG but they seem to be going downhill very quickly with some of their questionable decisions in the last year or so.
"Good News" I hope GOG enjoys the money I spent with them the last 13 years. I really don't think there is going to be any more. I am happy to say "I knew them when"

Sorry about the rant but I am just done. Hope everyone has a blessed day.

Don't blame the QA department, I know from personal experience that this was very likely found and raised during testing. Someone higher up at GOG has made the call to release anyway.

My concern now is how GOG are actually going to roll out a fix for this, considering the client doesn't even start. How is it going to update itself if it can't start?

the hotfix is already out as of 5 mins ago... download Galaxy and install it over the top to get your client working mate

Yeah it's out. The client obviously can't update itself if it doesn't start so it's still a bit annoying to need to download the installer again but at least it's fixed now.

I still need to question exactly how this happened and why the call was made to release, and what measures are in place to prevent it happening again.
