[This is a sticky post, it will be visible in every single page of this thread. It has been published in October 2020.]

Our moderation team decided not to take a side in the discussion since this giveaway thread was created by the community and, as long as there are no forum rules violated, is up to you, dear Gogers, to decide its fate. We will not set giveaway rules, edit the OP's post, nor lock the whole thread.

However, to make it easier for newcomers to understand the situation (about the OP being inactive and other), I will stick my own post right above the first one.

You are, of course, free to create new threads to start anew and make your own, clear rules. At the same time, please stay reasonable when crating them, as multiple new duplicates might make it even more confusing for many Gogers.

That being said, here you can find a post with dxenija's community poll to have better understanding of the situation: CLICK.

At the time of writing, open giveaway threads are:
- Massive Giveaways Blog
- Free (temporary) keys giveaway central topic. (this one)
- Updated Itch.io giveaways

Be nice to each other *flies away*

thats incorrect. they use the block chain to track "ownership" of the games, which allows the buysing and selling of digital games. They also have their own currency called "iron", but it is not a crypto currency. They had plans on mining (which would be optionsl) but removed it. They are working on other ways to ear that "iron" (which may include mining?), but currently there is no mining.

However, being on a block chain =/= crypto mining =/= crypto currency.

There's no need to be afraid of using Robot Cache. It's founded by Brian Fargo, the boss of inXile Entertainment and previous boss of Interplay, and AMD is also an official partner.

As amok said, they use the blockchain to give each game a unique identifier, which is necessary when you're going to resell digital games.
The blockchain isn't a bad thing in itself, just the extremely wasteful, greed-driven stuff it's mostly known for so far.

The computing power here isn't wasted on cryptocurrency, it's used by UC Berkeley's BOINC program for scientific studies (Berkeley Open Infrastructure for Network Computing).
In their own words: "The program will offer a diverse range of hand-picked projects that you can explore, with each notably striving to make a positive impact on the world."

You can check out active and completed projects utilizing BOINC's distributed computing network here:
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Berkeley_Open_Infrastructure_for_Network_Computing#Projects

And as stated in Robot Cache's policy: "IRON (their "currency") has no cash value and cannot be exchanged for cash, and furthermore has no value of any kind outside of the Robot Cache Platform." It's pretty much just store credit.

As amok also said, the option to use your computer to earn IRON isn't even active at the moment, but if they activate it in the future it will be completely optional.
No one's going to start massive mining operations to earn IRON to buy games at Robot Cache and thus hurting the environment. It's just an option for gamers if they want to contribute to scientific studies and earn a little to buy games with at the same time.

A store like this will probably never be DRM-free though. It's more an alternative to Steam etc, just with the option to resell your games when you're done with them.

Definitely, no way for that to be DRM-free.

But discussions about it should probably go on separate threads, or just the giveaway discussions thread. There even were a couple of old ones specifically about RobotCache, here and here. And some posts after first being mentioned on the Massive Giveaways thread, post 4890, going to 4903.

Homeworld: Deserts of Kharak is a very good real-time strategy/sci-fi game. I've had it in my library for the last year or two (in addition to the other releases that are available on GOG as part of the collection). Now this game is 90% off on GOG and that discount includes every single DLC for the title. So it's a very good buy if you like the genre. =)
