IAmSinistar: Some of us still hope one of those things is a GOG Merchandise option. I'd love one of those DRM-Free Revolution t-shirts and a stuffed GOGbear. Or they could get into what a number of us have suggested, namely selling game soundtracks.

But I suspect these ideas are too sensible and instead they are working on a GOG Auction Site and GOG Gluten-Free Vegan Cookbook. ;)
i'd guess they haven't started with merchandise, because the merchandise team is currently busy with removing "one world, one price" from all already printed t-shirts. :)

I kid. It finally stopped around noon today. :D

Unfortunately I know exactly what this means. Firek locked his keys in his car......again. Now they are all in the parking lot with a coat hanger.

this must be one of the "how many of gog's staff do one need, to ..." jokes :)

omega64: It would be nice if he actually read what the blues respond with. :P
You both are sooo intelligent people. I'm so sorry to disturb your feelings. I'll just be quiet. Well or not.

I read what Mr. "we will not fucking do anything" said. I do not believe that this patch will ever come to happen. I'll just leave it at that for now and in let's say 6 or 12 months will speak again and I guarantee nothing has happened. Can I then get my money back?

And as long as there are Securom files present it is DRM for me. If you are ok with the way it is, why do you have to tell me that you have no problem? I'll never understand this "I'm so much better than you and I have to tell you how morally superior I am".

@omega64: And what about the registry entries that can't be removed until you use the Securom remover software. Ths sounds like the remover sooftware sees this as a Securom install and that is per se DRM.

Just a quick question, how do you think dormant Securom files allow the copyright holder to manager their digital rights?

Which was exactly my point. Those files don't prevent you from doing anything, it's not like your pc will suddenly explode.
avatar
PaterAlf: ...does it really matter that the files might become active when you have other active SecuROM programs on your computer? In that case your system is (willingly) "infected" with SecuROM anyway.
avatar
Crispy78: Then that other game has installed SecuROM, irrespective of whether GOG's version of FEAR has put a few files on there or not?
avatar
Randalator: Then SecuROM is already active and the whole matter is moot. Duh.
You all seem to miss the real point here:
You install gameA that requires some active version of securom in order to be played.
You install gameB (gogs fear) and with it some inactive version of securom.
There's a high probability that there'll be some securom conflicts and gameA stops being playable anymore.

Anyway, thank you @Ciris for responding ... it's a bit sad that we somehow "forced" your reply with all our "bitching and moaning" ;) and instead would have been nicer for GOG to address this immediately without customers complaining about this.
And it's also sad that this is low on your priority list and I guess it'll stay low for a very long time ... here's to hoping it'll be solved in some foreseeable end.

In fairness, he did link in his response that this had been addressed over two months ago:

http://www.gog.com/forum/general/fear_installed_securom_all_over_my_computer_does_anyone_know_how_to_get_rid_of_it/post162

The "bitching and moaning" didn't really achieve anything more than requiring Ciris to repeat what Firek had already said.

I thought Ciris was a woman. The avatar is female, so I might have assumed too much, but really, Ciris is a guy? O.o

That's because "bitching and moaning" are not very efficient strategies. What you would have to do instead is checking that other games with SecuRom are affected by it and demanding your money back because the product is faulty. That might make the fix going up in priority. Everything else... probably not.

IAmSinistar: Well, more accurately, it's dormant. I'm just a purist who doesn't like infections, even inactive ones. :)
In a silly mood at this point, but is this your opinion about vaccines as well? After all, vaccines are inactive infections.

JaqFrost: but really, Ciris is a guy? O.o
No. Ciris is a she. Tune in on GOG's Casual Mondays on Twitch to hear her punch Konrad.

I was thinking about that myself, oddly enough, and considering making a humourous posting along those lines. I am staunchly in favour of vaccines, being a biologist as well as a rational person. And I wouldn't mind a dormant copy of SecuROM on my computer if it would function as a vaccine and immunise me against the product itself. :)

Well, it does depend on how it's implemented. One way would be that if these dormant entries are created, legitimate ones couldn't overwrite them, thus SecuROM may not function properly. This would be the immunization you are talking about, but it would mean that it would break SecuROM protected games. So I'm not sure if immunization would be such a good thing ;)

Quite so. Hence my preference to just avoid the vectors of infection altogether. :)
