We used this year’s spring cleaning to dust off some of the great DOS classics.

Thanks to the partnership and long-time cooperation with the DOSBox Crew, together we’ve managed to enhance with cloud saves feature over 100 classics, with more to come.

Since the introduction of the Universal Cloud Saves to GOG Galaxy, the feature has been added to more and more all-time classics that never offered save syncing and cloud backups. Working closely with DOSBox Crew and adding cloud saves to older games is another step that we take to improve gamers experience with good old games.

Many of these cloud saves enabled DOS classics joined the Spring Sale line up offering savings for such must-haves like Colonization (-75%), Dungeon Keeper Gold (-75%), Heroes of Might and Magic (-75%), Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3 (-75%), Wing Commander III (-75%), classic X-COMs (-75%), and many more.

Bluddy: I'm actually interested in the details. I couldn't find documentation for `-t overlay` so I assumed it just redirects all writes to the overlay mount, while reading first from the overlay mount and if not found, in the regular mount.
avatar
Qbix: Things get more complicated when you allow files in the regular mount to be deleted (fake of course) and directories
(the overlay one) to be hidden, when they are part of the normal mount location. (as is in this case).
(and of course being able to create a file with the same name as was just fake deleted and then deleted again!)
And of course ensuring that it works on Linux, resulted in quite a few name translations going on.
There is also logic to create missing directories in the overlay. Redirecting the data is only a small portion of the code.
Very neat. Sounds a lot like a version of the read-only layers in Docker containers.
Although I'm not going to use this feature, I wanted to thank both Dosbox and GOG crew for all the info shared here. Even if I'm not going to use it, getting the latest Dosbox version will improve many games for sure :) Keep up the good work!!

Thiev: Issue is not with games, but with the client. Hopefully rebuilds won't be necessary.

yeah noticed that earlier

eiii: Can I easily revert that setting in dosbox.conf, so that the GOG dosbox and the vanilla one behave the same?
avatar
Qbix: yes, just remove the mount command that has the -t overlay at the end.
That's easy, thanks!

So the saved games are not written to a different directory, they are written to an overlay file system, which is synchronized by Galaxy? Then this overlay file system could be used by any mechanism like rsync to synchronize and backup the saved games?

They are written to a different directory, because of the overlay file system.

From the outside, yes, everything the game writes goes to the directory where the overlay filesystem is saved. But from the view of the game it still writes its files to the usual location, right?

Now we just need a new official dosbox release, so that the overlay file system feature will be available from the usual Linux distributions. ;)

Yes, the game is not aware of it.

Al-Quadim: The Genie's Curse
...

EDIT: will be updating the list as more games are being added
As I discovered in searching Gog for this title, that's a typo -- there's no U in the game (since it's Arabic), it should be , Al-Qadim: The Genie's Curse

[This matters since (A) you say above this is going into a permanent list by Gog, which needs to be searchable for your own purposes, and (B) same thing for those of us who search Gog using it, like I tried, or (C) copy-paste the list and expect to be able to search it for titles]

P.S. somewhere this was hand-typed at Gog rather than copy-pasted, which is a recipe for mistakes which may persist, so that's food for thought about internal processes.

Edit:
Constructor is also not right; it was renamed by Gog to "Constructor Classic 1997" (according to my notes this is because a remaster "Constructor HD" was due to be released in 2016, which I don't see on Gog but is on Steam as just "Constructor" dated May 26, 2017).

Edit 2, more naming corrections or disclaimers:

Death Gate -- gog search fails; previously sold but delisted???

Duke Nukem 1+2 -- sold but then delisted Dec 31 2015, publisher revamped licensing due to remake

Duke Nukem 3D -- sold but then delisted Dec 31 2015, publisher revamped licensing due to remake

Forgotten Realms: The Archives - Collection One -- incorrect name, search fails because actual store listing is "Forgotten Realms - The Archives - Collection One" (punctuation difference, probably a mistake sinces it's different than the #2 and #3 in series, but there you have it - and the difference causes Gog search to fail)

No Ultima 7?
Wow, you included some games that have been de-listed: awesome! Way to go GOG! Now, if only there were a Linux version of Galaxy...

I tested a few games and it works really nicely.
I hoped it would work for installers and stuff like that, but I guess that's on the pipeline. Anything that creates a dir fails currently.

Anyway this is pretty cool, I hope at some point we can load games for a ZIP (In dosbox, not really for GoG re-releases), that way I could launch my zipped copies and changes would be saved to the overlay, seems like a win-win!

Start of shameless self promotion:
I have my own fork for libretro/RetroArch and I hooked it up so it mounts the overlay automatically and it's perfect for me, I play on Android and PC and I can keep the folders synced with this just fine instead of syncing the whole game folder.

So far I have tried DOOM2, Keen series, Tyrian with great results!

(Presuming that's sarcasm:)
No no no, that wasn't bad of Gog, it's a *good* thing, for two reasons:
(1) some of us bought the games before they were delisted (I did), so adding the feature is still a good thing, and
(2) presumably *some* day the publisher will start selling Duke Nukem 20th Anniversary here on Gog, and then either allow the classics to be relisted, or include Duke Nukem classic versions for free, and meanwhile the save game work is done and ready.

Update of my errata list (wrong names or other issues/comments) for the list of names of the DOSBox games that now have cloud save:

[This matters since (A) you say above this is going into a permanent list by Gog, which needs to be searchable for your own purposes, and (B) same thing for those of us who search Gog using it, like I tried, or (C) copy-paste the list and expect to be able to search it for titles]

Megarace 1 -- Gog lists "Megarace 1+2", so apparently the other half of the pack, Megarace 2, doesn't have the upgrade

Softporn Adventure -- gog search fails; delisted?

Terra Nova -- abbreviated, not a pack/series name. Full name of gog listing is "Terra Nova: Strike Force Centauri"

The Elder Scrolls: Arena -- not listed on store (which can lead to confusion) but is gifted if one buys a related title.

Tex Murphy 1 & 2 -- gog search fails but there *are* five Tex Murphy games on Gog, does "1 & 2" refer to two of those?

Wing Commander: Privateer -- appears twice in list; see also Linux CLI "sort -u" or "sort | uniq" :-P

...it looks like most of these games have Gog ratings of 4/5 or higher, although some are 3.5/5 or higher, and only a few are lower rated. Which suggests that either they chose higher rated games to upgrade first, or possibly that they mostly only sell the higher rated DOS games.

None of which is surprising, I would do the same if I were in their place.
Lesser rated and lesser known games will follow later on, I guess.
