We used this year’s spring cleaning to dust off some of the great DOS classics.

Thanks to the partnership and long-time cooperation with the DOSBox Crew, together we’ve managed to enhance with cloud saves feature over 100 classics, with more to come.

Since the introduction of the Universal Cloud Saves to GOG Galaxy, the feature has been added to more and more all-time classics that never offered save syncing and cloud backups. Working closely with DOSBox Crew and adding cloud saves to older games is another step that we take to improve gamers experience with good old games.

Many of these cloud saves enabled DOS classics joined the Spring Sale line up offering savings for such must-haves like Colonization (-75%), Dungeon Keeper Gold (-75%), Heroes of Might and Magic (-75%), Alone in the Dark: The Trilogy 1+2+3 (-75%), Wing Commander III (-75%), classic X-COMs (-75%), and many more.

trusteft: Ah....you confused me.

I am worried about downloading these new installers (and I hate that I don't have the option to download previous versions but anyway) since I heard people having issues with them. I don't care about the client and only want offline installers. As far as I know the client is no longer attached with the offline installers, so...yeah, no idea.

MightyPinecone: The client itself doesn't come with the non-Galaxy stand alone versions of the games, but there are some files that Galaxy make use of that also comes with the non-Galaxy versions. This is supposedly so that it becomes easy to import the games into Galaxy should you ever want to, and also–I'd wager‒because keeping multiple versions of the games up to date and running without a hitch is a pain in the ass. So yes, non-Galaxy versions of games also contains some Galaxy related files, and when these get updated, both Galaxy bundled installers and non-Galaxy installers becomes updated.
I'm one of those who only download and use non-Galaxy, offline, standalone (or whatever you want to call them) installers and too was concerned about what had changed in these installers to accommodate Galaxy cloud saves.

So, I tested out three different games and installed both the prior and new standalone installation versions of these games. I then compared the installed game folders and can confirm that the changes are as follows:

1. DosBox has been updated from version 0.74 to 0.74-2.1
2. The DosBox config files have been updated to accommodate the new version of DosBox. From what I could see there have been no changes made to the DosBox game specific settings in these config files (although this may be game specific).
3. A couple of GOG dll files have been deleted (GameuxInstallHelper.dll & goggame.dll).
4. A few other goggame files have changed.
5. A new goglog.ini file has been added.
6. The GOG DosBox Configuration utility (Launch Settings / Launch Setup) shortcut has been deleted. The utility is still available via the Windows Start menu.
7. The game uninstall program and files have been changed accordingly.
8. A new webcache.zip file (~300 to 400kB) is installed.
9. A new (empty) cloud_saves folder has been added.

The new installation folders are around 1 to 2 MB larger.than before.

There are NO changes to any of the original DOS game files.

BTW - I had no issues installing the new versions of games with Norton Security running, e.g. the new DosBox SDL.dll and SDL_net.dll were left untouched.

Wow! What a great feature! Well done, Qbix and the rest of the team! I'm looking forward to you adding it to the SVN!
avatar
KevinAmedy: I just tried that on a few games, and I get two error messages.

SDL_net.dll not found

SDL.dll not found

What do they mean?

squid_80: For some reason BitDefender has started detecting these files as malicious and removes them, even though they're exactly the same as the ones included in earlier installs.
Disable BitDefender and verify your games with the galaxy client (look a few posts up for instructions).
I do not have BitDefender. I have windows 10 64bit with Wndows Defender.

So have you installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable?
Very well, job well done, congratulations guys, a lot of work must have gotten into this :)

teceem: So have you installed Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable?
I have finished installing Microsoft Visual C++ 2010 SP1 Redistributable, and now the two error messages have changed. They still say the two SDL.dll files are missing, but they now suggest that progams may need to be reinstalled.

Am I making progress? It will be so much fun to have to uninstall and reinstall all 15 DOS games. Thank you so much, GOG.

I have e-mailed GOG tech support about my problem.

So try to reinstall one and see if it helps. You're not playing all 15 at once, right?

I did the reinstall, and the game works now. Thank you to everyone who helped me.

Just these alone are cause to celebrate. Now if you could get the Civilization series to support cloud saves, I could die happy.
Also, I'm amazed that there are new features released for games no longer for sale, ex. Duke Nukem. I was not expecting that.
