There's no defense against FREE stuff

Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten, the witty tower-defense/RPG, has just been delux-ified with a free update that brings HD graphics, new content, and tons of nice tweaks!

So you loved the crazy antics of Azra, as she made her way through the Half-Way World, right? But you have to realise that, however fabulous her adventure was, it didn't look nearly as good as it does nowadays. Oh no sir.

See, the DX update brings a beautified, thoroughly enriched version of the tale that you should definitely discover or even revisit anew. Here are some highlights:

- All new HD graphics
- No more Adobe Air shenanigans
- New Game+ with expanded story content
- Access to Azra's journal right from the start

Those who already own the game, get Defender's Quest: Valley of the Forgotten DX for free. Nostalgics, or people who simply don't want to let go, can choose to keep playing the "legacy" version, although the super-spiffy DX version also allows you to import your saves and continue your adventure in a snap.
What are you waiting for, then?

MIK0: They added a new cool version and switched the old one as an extra. I believe that should count as a change. How am I supposed to know when the file I can download changed if is not reported and notified?
I agree, but I had an update notification, and there's a big announcement featured in the site news. Maybe they thought it was enough, or maybe they simply forgot to write a changelog. Simultaneously releasing an update on at least 3 different stores can't be easy...

Trid: That made me realize that I lost all saves because it's another game that keep saved games in AppData... I don't get why they do that... sigh...
Have a look here: https://github.com/larsiusprime/tdrpg-bugs/issues/1052
I have been looking forward to this update for almost a year. Unfortunately, the new version runs significantly worse on my PC than the old version - even if I enable legacy graphics and sprites! That should not happen with a simple switch of an engine! For me, Defender's Quest was always the prime example of a 5-Star Indie Game: As simple and as deep as you want it to be, and hours upon hours of endless fun, coupled with a well written story. I've gotten five friends of mine to buy this game, and I've talked a couple more into buying the HD version when it comes out. Unfortunately, as it stands now, I cannot longer reccommend this game to my friends. Knowing this is the engine Defender's Quest II will run on makes me sad, since I can run Overwatch in Full HD with a stable 60 FPS just fine, but I can't play the sequel to a sprite-based indie game.

Yes, I do know I can still download the old version.

That's... odd. This new version runs significantly better than the old for me.
Oh man, love this game! And now with the free update, I've got a reason to play it again!

Also looking forward to the sequel! Any news when that one will be out?
Does anybody know what the DX stands for. Trying to search for it with Google returns references to DirectX, which is understandable. I remember that there's also Dusforce DX, and I've seen many games that use the DX suffix. It has to be something from the consoles, but my last console was the SNES, so it's a complete mystery.

Kudos to the the developers for releasing this HD update FREE, to this very good game. And thank you for getting rid of Flash, your game is greater for it.

I think DX stand for DeluXe in this context -especially since Retro City Rampage and Dustforce became DX as well after getting some features updated...

That has to be it, and it's mentioned in the announcement post and in the trailer, which is awesome by the way, I can't believe it didn't occur to me.

rampancy: Just as a heads up, Galaxy decided that it wanted to "update" my DX version of the game back to the original AIR-based app. Fantastic.
avatar
JudasIscariot: That should not happen. When did you have the update? We have the new AIR-less version available via Galaxy. Can you try "Verify & Repair"?
I did do a Verify and Repair, and it seems to have fixed the problem.

There is a minor bug in the game itself though; after the hospital mission in the basic game, the game suddenly awared me the achievement for earning all of the unique weapons and armor, in addition to upgrading both unique weapons and armor in NG+.
We fixed the achievement bug.

larsiusprime: We fixed the achievement bug.
I'm one of the Win XP users who can't launch the game. How will us GOG users be able to get the GL build that you made that seems to fix the problem? Or is it still in beta on Steam only?

Thanks for all of your work.
How do I install it? Or did I miss out?
