Interesting remake

At the first glance I thought that this is UFO as it meant to be in nineties, but there are quite a lot of differences. It is faster and simpler. The storyline kind of presses you all the time pushing you in a certain line. In previous X-Coms the development of war with aliens was mostly about your skills in combat and outmanoeuvring aliens in technology. Here it is mostly a race in one direction. Also the tactical combat is simpler, which I don´t like so much. For example there is unlimited ammo. You still have to reload, but you will never run out of it. This takes away many tactical choices like using alien weapons (which explode almost always when an alien dies), stunning of important alien and dragging him away in withdrawal when outnumbered etc. Expansion Enemy Within adds a lot of more features and solves some of the issues. To sum it up. I enjoyed it a lot, it is decent remake, but it lost some of good features on the way.

WAIT FOR A SALE!

I want to put up a quick informative review. XCOM: Enemy Unknown is a decent turn-based tactical strategy game. It was a much needed breath of fresh air to the genre when it came out, and helped pave the way for better games. You'll get attached to your dudes in ways you can't imagine, and you'll learn important lessons in the cold, fatalistic nature of the universe when they die horribly. All in all, I thought it was a 4/5 package, but I think 3/5 is an absolutely fair score for the frustration levels. YMMV. FYI: It goes on sale for 80% off very frequently. This is a $10 USD game. Don't buy it for $50.

Triple Dip

This is my third time purchasing this game, and I'd do it again. I originally played both Enemy Unknown and Enemy Within on the Xbox 360 with this being my first time on PC. Both versions of the game are absolutely fantastic. It can be frustratingly hard but when everyhting "clicks" for you it becomes so fun. The base and resource management part of the game is deep enough to make you really put thought it your choices, but light enough to not be overbearin, while the combat portion forces you to think through every move you make and plan your movements and attacks several steps ahead. The story of the game is pretty light, aliens come down and you gotta stop em. There are a few FMV cutscenes talking about some broader themes like if the technology XCOM is obtaining from the aliens is too much power for humanity, etc but it's nothing too deep. The gameplay loop is what carries XCOM. As the description says this pack contains both the original Enemy Unknown and the expanded version of the game Enemy Within. The base game is great on its own and is worth a playthrough but Enemy Within does add a lot to the experience. You can jump straight into EU and not miss anything as it is the orignal game just with new features. I only have two real gripes with the game; soldier customization and discovering aliens in combat. The soldier customization is good but not too deep, even with the added options in Enemy Within. That being said it's still one of the most fun parts of the game. During battle if one of your units spots a group of aliens they get a free turn and can move into position, which I guess would be "realistic," but it can be really frustrating when you're trying to move your team up as a group. This forces you to move very slowly and deliberately if you're not trying to trigger new enemies. Other than those two things though, 5-star game.

Great, but no cigar

This game is so very good in so many ways and so frustrating sub-par in just as many if you ever played the original. Everytime I start playing it again, the limited choices, cheaper combat mechanics, & restricted strategic options frustrate me to quit and boot up the original. All they had to do was put a fresh coat of paint on that game and it would have blown just as many young minds. It's still great and if you've never played the original games, you'll probably love it if you have even a passing interest in strategy games. It's just not as good as the original 2 games, certainly the first. It's a shame the older games play so janky on modern machines through dosbox. It's closer to true greatness than any effort to ever remake old classics like MOO2, but I can't get over the fact that I inevitably wind up so frustrated at the extremely restrictive gameplay mechanics that I keep going back to the original which is wide-open by comparison. Were it not for those failings, it'd be a 5 star game, but they really strapped some rails on this experience.

Great game marred by long-standing issue

Excellent game but even after all these years, there remains no fix for mouse alignment issues when using a 21:9 monitor. There are settings in the config files which have been proposed as a fix, but they do not work. These have been fixed in XCOM 2. Showing how much they care about their customer base, Firaxis has not Fixathis.
