A classic with some infuriating problems

An action-oriented strategy game with a dash of resource management. The actual game action is very good but there's some infuriating problems related to UI -sometimes is hard to see who are you shooting or healing, soldiers who come back from the hospital will have default equipment again, even if better equipment is unused, when you upgrade grenades new soldiers will have them equipped by default (grenades are "infinite") but you'll have to upgrade current soldiers manually, when you are about to embark on a mission and notice a soldier needs a specific item, you have to go back several menus and then forward some more to manufacture it, then come back to equip it. If you need a piece of equipment worn by a benched soldier, you have to manually find him, make him equip something else, then go back. There's a "helpful" button to make everything available -by making all benched soldiers revert to basic equipment. Of course you can't revert them back to the good equipment automatically. Don't use this button -you'll regret it later in-game. If you want to get an idea of your team's strengths there's no single screen to see everything -for something as basic as armor you have to enter a menu to inspect all (assigned and benched) soldiers. In the team composition screen different armor models tend to look similar, and sometimes you can't even see things like guns. When researching new technology sometimes is unclear what kind of weapon (soldier or vehicle) it is. The STORY is interesting, but the plot-based events can be all around the place depending on your decisions. RECOMMENDED, but you need some tolerance to FRUSTRATION.

GREAT single, MISSING multi

This is one of the best games I ever played. Gameplay mechanics, character customisation etc. are great, but where the game shine the most is the way the storytelling is being done. This game just sucks you in, and before you realize, there is already the middle of the night, and you force yourself to postpone this amazing adventure for tomorrow. The way this game smoothly introduces player to its world and gameplay mechanics is simply a masterpiece - masterpiece that should be studied and replicated by game developers, and relished by players. Sadly GOG version of this game don't include multiplayer part of the game :( I hope it will be fixed, and then I would be happy to give this game full 5 stars it deserves.

XCOM: Hyphen Removed

In a way, the removal of the hyphen is a symbol of what this game is. It's XCOM simplified. Micromanagement, which is the worst part of the original games imo, is almost entirely gone. It allows for the focus to be put on global operations, combat and order of operations rather than annoyingly tiny aspects of making sure your soldier has a basic rifle. It completely captures the feel of the original in spite of it's streamlined nature. The graphics are colorful and clean, allowing for easy view of the battlefield. Animations are captured through a cinematic camera that emphasizes the battles of your soldiers. Hit percentages dictate life or death moments in game. I have missed 97% chance to hit and I have hit 77% chance to miss. Frustrating at times, exhilirating at others. While criticized heavily, there is no denying that this creates tense and addicting gameplay that will keep you coming back. For me, these Firaxis XCOM games are the best strategy games on the market today. They hold the feel and atmosphere of their inspiration but create an experience that is smooth and easy to engage with for most people. It definitely won't replace that original X-com experience for everyone, but most will find it hard to go back, and that is a success. Now bring on XCOM 3.

Reboot well done

Reboot of a well loved franchise, in a genre which is very rarely served in gaming. I don't remember good squad-level tactical games since JA2 and Silent Storm. What it is: stopping an alien invasion, with global strategy planning, and with tactical battles involving 4-6 commandos on an isometric map. Compared to the original game a few things were streamlined. For example the squad and the enemies are less numerous, so missions are ~30 mins instead of 60-90. You only have to manage one base instead of numerous bases, inventory is less invasive since there are less items per soldier. PRO * the AI is reasonable, tries to flank or focuses down soldiers who can be killed * own soldier abilites add additional options and combinations as time goes on. Easy to get into, but more depth is added later * permadeath, which is a very brave thing nowadays * no handholding, players treated with respect * graphics are pretty, has a "serious cartoon" style which I like CONTRA * the in game tutorial marks certain options priority. Very misleading, as these are NOT the most useful topics, but ones which advance the plot. * there are some too powerful player options in Enemy Unknown (mimetic skin) * the operations slingshot DLC has serious issues. The missions are very difficult, and the reward brakes the game economy. I advise to turn the DLC off in the first campaign. UNDECIDED * encountering aliens gives them a free turn. Unrealistic, but adds tension when you don't see them. I find it fun, but it is not for everyone The end result is great squad level tactical game, with faster pace than the original. The best in the genre since 1999 (JA2), and in my opinion superior to XCOM2. Good job!

Pretty good game but original is better.

Pretty fun game even though they have oversimplified things. Things they screwed up that made the game less fun than the original. 1:The time Units is far superior to the 2action point simplifisation in this game. It's still kinda works and pretty fun but lose some tactical depth over the original time units. 2:The Original had unique stats on every soldier. New has a set stat on every soldier dependig on what role they have. Must say i liked the original better. Where you could be lucky or unlucky with your new recruits. 3: Original had ammo clips. This version got unlimited ammo enough said. 4: The original had each bullet be calculated som you could hit or miss on any bullet when firing auto. The new only got hit or miss. 5: Bit too cartoony graphics(xcom2 has much better graphic style than this one) Biggest mistakes with the firaxis version(s)
