XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year.
Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet’s last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.
Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.
XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.
This game is all about relaoding. You think your tactic mind will help you throught missions? Guess again. Most missions have limited time to achieve goal and this time is so short you won't be able to scout area and think of the best aproach. Cause we are resistance movement and we go in fight without intel or knowing what's out there.
You don't like when your men die? Then this game is not for you. Unless you have hours to reload same mission.
Private snipers and gunners are useless. So exping them will feel like hell.
And what's with reinforcements of enemy? They always drop near or on my evacuation point. Is it a think or was I just unlucky?
While it's not a perfect game, I had a good time with it. Yes, the timer in most missions can be a bit annoying, but early on you can get a resistance order that makes it pretty much irrelevant unless the player rushes head-on out of concealment. I did enjoy setting up perfect ambushes that wiped out pretty strong patrols within a single turn, but the whole thing did get a bit repetitive after a while. The Avatar project, the game's doomsday clock mechanic, was also easy to keep at bay with covert sabotage orders and facility-attack missions. I really did turtle my way to victory.
I've seen a few weird complaints about enemies constantly taking cover: well, duh! It would be way too easy if they didn't. Besides that's what are all these explosives are for. Grenades are your friends! I always made sure to have at least one if not two grenadiers on my squad to remove that pesky cover (and armor). I do love the level of destruction in this game. In the late game it isn't uncommon to be leveling entire city blocks with the destructive arsenal the game provides.
The game does still have some bugginess and oddities. Sometimes after an in-mission action the game will just sit there for a moment before continuing for no obvious reason, go into severe slow-mo effect (not hardware related), or enemies will occasionally zip across the map and out-of-bounds visually even if they're still within actual game sight and can be targeted. None of these occurrences had a real negative effect on the overall game, and they really only happen once in a blue moon.
As for the DLC, the War of the Chosen was pretty decent and the Tactical Legacy Pack is pretty fun with some backstory prior to XCOM 2's events, but the Reinforcements & Resistance Warrior packs can be safely ignored. Those extra costume outfits just seem out of place (and ugly), and the special alien rulers were more annoying than fun to beat as they get an action for every one of your actions in a single turn.
A bit overcomplicated and stressful compared to Enemy Unknown. Less freedom of playstyle because of all the timers. (the expansion supposedly fixes this)
When I started playing this game the hours passed before my eyes. I started playing it on an Friday night and decided to finish my run after 22 hours straight of pure gaming, totally unaware of anything outside this amazing, hooking experience. 10/10.
I loved the old games and played them a lot. To this day i'd still rather go back and play them, than play the new ones.
I know a lot of people like this game, but for me it is just a complete sh!t show right from the start. In stead of starting from scratch you get thrown in to a chaotic scenario where way to many things are going on all at once.
In the old games you had time to learn, time to build/upgrade, time to do everything and prepare yourself slowly for what was to come. Here you have zero time for anything. New missions and the like are constantly popping up, so you never get to finish what you were doing (which i absolutely hate).
Despite having a tutorial the game doesn't tell you half of what you can do and how to do it.
As always with these games your "soldiers" can't hit anything, even if it stands right in front of them. 85% chance of hitting really means 25%. But the aliens will rarely miss. This is just braindead, and will not accomplish anything but save scumming to avoid the unfair advantage they have even on lowest difficulty.
It's just not an enjoyable experience in my opinion.
