Description
XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year.

Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet’s last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.

Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.

  • XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
  • RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
  • TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
  • A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
  • RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
  • EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.

micro-review

XCOM2 is what XCOM should have been from the start. No more aliens appearing out of nowhere with no warning, and you have a few more options on how to approach situations even from the start of the campaign. There is even more room for maneuver. Unfortunately, like all Firaxis titles, it is full of gamey mechanics, for example: you have to do research so you can remove weapon mods without destroying them. It is very cool that the weapons have mods and everything, but anything that could be turned into a game mechanic, to make the game look more complex, got turned into a mechanic. In addition, it’s a bit silly that not all soldiers have handguns. XCOM2 the campaign is funneled through the story so it may appear that you don’t have as much agency as you expected. Don’t worry though, the game is full with options and there is plenty to do. The main DLC adds even more and overall the game feels complete and satisfying. Like all XCOM titles, the game is at its best when played in Ironman mode (no “scum saving”). But there are so many game mechanics and things that you could greatly benefit from knowing in advance, not to mention the occasion bug, that pure Ironman might be very time consuming. So maybe a solution to this might be a self-imposed Ironman where you can only load saved games when you encounter new game mechanics. Rating: High ground *Editors' Pick* https://pixelloot.com

Everyone has a valuable opinion

And doesn't afraid to experss it. I love the game but everyone are telling me what is happening. A foe appears, camera starts moving across the map, foe drops a line or two about way your are going to die, camera starts moving back, central notifies you "you know it seems you have to deal with a choosen", no f way, thanks for the heads-up cuz I had stoke for 30 seconds and missed it. Once is nice, twice is annoyning. You can disable some VO, solders won't bother you but everyone else will. Mods are helping a bit but no one can stop Bradford bring you useless info

Got it working in Linux with mods!

Just to give potential tux customers a heads-up: I got XCOM 2 installed via WINE (v6.0.2), as well as War of the Chosen and the Tactical Legacy Pack, and the game runs without issue. I mention this because, as of this date, there is no Lutris fork for installing the GOG version. I'm running Ubuntu 20.04 with Oibaf Mesa drivers on all AMD hardware. Also, it takes a bit of knowledge, but I even got it running with the Long War of the Chosen mod! You'll have to read the LWOTC's installation wiki closely, as well as download some additional mods to help it function without issue, but it can be done. Check the forum here for help to make that happen. I was initially hesitant because I didn't want to waste my money on a chance, but let this be proof that it works. My chance paid off! Finally, an offline option for XCOM 2 that works on Linux with all its expansions and mods. Enjoy!

XCOM2: Great game!

The combat is fast-paced and thrilling, the variety in the game-modes is a breath of fresh air. Sometimes though, it has wonky animation and textures, but that is to be expected of older games.
