XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year.
Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet’s last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.
Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.
XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.
Please do not blame GOG.com for your faults! If you would have read the system requirements (=> "Multiplayer mode is not supported") and GOG's statement under DRM free ("No activation or online connection required to play.") you wouldn't have bought the game. Therefore giving only one star to the game is wrong! So, not reading the informations given on the website now costs you 100 $!
So I'm a major fan of the entire X-COM series. This game is a credit to this legacy, but I do need to state that there are some modern design issues that creep into how it plays that are affecting my enjoyment of it overall.
I am currently about a dozen houras into the game and I am constantly interrupted by events approximately every 10 seconds on the Geoscape. It's a constant barrage of things to deal with in the early game and it is very difficult to figure out how to sort through the noise.
The original game and the 2015 remake all had their own level of interruption happening in those same areas but this feels far more invasive than previous versions.
It has made the opening of this game an absolute slog to get through and I'm having trouble keeping my attention focused on it because I cannot get a chance to look at the overall map for more than a few seconds before the next 5 events show up at the same time.
This series is supposed to be hard and overwhelming at the start, but this has been ridiculous so far.
Other than that major complaint though, everything else about this game is absolutely perfect. It continues to expand the experience of the 2015 remake in logical ways, and as much as I miss the gameplay of the original this play style is still a ton of fun and a worthy successor to one of the single greatest games ever made.
The new classes, abilities, and skill trees are fun to go through and the voice cast makes it feel like the Next Generation of this series. It is worth the frustration I've felt so far and I will continue to play through this whole thing.
I probably won't buy it here though, as I already own it on xbox and Steam, however there's one glaring fault with this release: as GOG lacks a mod repository, your only option will be Nexus, which is severly limited in comparison to Steam Workshop. That said, XCOM 2 with WOTC is easily one of my top games ever, might even be contending for the first spot. The gameplay is great, the graphics are great, even the story is rather interesting in WOTC, with the chosen having vastly different personalities.
