XCOM 2 is the sequel to XCOM: Enemy Unknown, the 2012 award-winning strategy game of the year.
Earth has changed. Twenty years have passed since world leaders offered an unconditional surrender to alien forces. XCOM, the planet’s last line of defense, was left decimated and scattered. Now, in XCOM 2, the aliens rule Earth, building shining cities that promise a brilliant future for humanity on the surface, while concealing a sinister agenda and eliminating all who dissent from their new order.
Only those who live at the edges of the world have a margin of freedom. Here, a force gathers once again to stand up for humanity. Always on the run, and facing impossible odds, the remnant XCOM forces must find a way to ignite a global resistance, and eliminate the alien threat once and for all.
XCOM ON THE RUN: Take command of the Avenger, an alien supply craft converted to XCOM’s mobile headquarters. New open-ended gameplay lets you decide where to guide your strike team, how to grow popular support, and when to combat enemy counter-operations.
RECRUIT RESISTANCE FIGHTERS: Five soldier classes, each with its own skill tree, let you create specific soldiers for your tactical plan.
TACTICAL GUERRILLA COMBAT: New gameplay systems offer more tactical flexibility in combat. Use concealment to ambush enemy patrols. Loot enemies for precious gear and artifacts. Rescue VIPs and save fallen comrades by carrying them to the extraction point.
A NEW BREED OF ENEMY: A diverse cast of enemies from powerful new alien species to the ADVENT, enforcers of the alien regime, offer a distinct tactical challenge.
RESEARCH, DEVELOP AND UPGRADE: Configure and build rooms on the Avenger to give XCOM new capabilities on the battlefield. Use your Scientists and Engineers to research, develop and upgrade weapons and armor to fit your preferred tactics.
EACH MISSION IS A UNIQUE CHALLENGE: Go on missions around the world, from wildlands to the heart of the alien-controlled megacities, to the depths of alien installations. There are virtually infinite combinations of maps, missions and goals.
This sets the standard for all turn-based strategy games. Its greatly enhanced by 'war of the chosen' also consider using 'long war 2' addon for significantly enhanced and longer campaign.
I also used a mod called 'Remove Weapon Upgrades' to be able to reuse weapon mods without worrying about getting a continent bonus. This is especially useful early on in the geame with limited weapon upgrades and resources.
Highly recommended
I have played the game through twice so far. Enjoy the upgrading of soldiers and equipment, and the variety in the different soldier types. I like that you get the psi operative later on, so right when you are starting to get a little bored with the same type of attacks over and over, you get the psi operative with a whole new set of abilities.
Don't want any spoilers so will not get into any details, but I felt the end of the game was very fulfilling.
I love games that have turn-based combat so that made the game all the better.
I will probably wait a few months then play the game a third time at a higher difficulty and see how that goes.
As I enjoyed game for the most part, I have to call it a 1 step forward and 2 step in compare to last one. Graphics are pretty, physics are cool and play a noticable role in beating enemies and finally you can choose what role your solders will have, but for some reason mistakes from older game was replicated, like artificial increasing dificulty by various limitations like 1 granade per soldier or completly un-tactical approach to end turn with move left after shot.
Whats bad, some new issues were added: some mission force you to push your troops in "human wave" right in front of superior enemy, because you have extremly limited time to fulfill main objective; if anyone took a damage in amount equal to bonus hp provided by armor then they are wounded (even gravely) anyway; story is completly laughable and has no logic, game even dont bother to tell you in cutscene what happen between xcom and xcom2; concealment could be great feature but its less useable than it could be; aliens receive extra movement when noticed but if they arent spotted, they just sit in place, even when they are dying in cloud of poisonous gas and so on.
While play itself could be satisfying, its good to have really calm mind for run, because emotions from doing "fast paced gun-in-and-out quick-response assault team" action will be pale in compare to game overall annoyingness.
The XCOM 2 base game is very solid, it has some minor bugs but in my 40 hours of playing, I haven't had a single game breaking one. the turned based tactical battles and base building are so engaging that you'll probably completely forget about the time and end up playing for hours in a single session.
I also recommend War of the Chosen since that expansion is in my opinion the definitive XCOM 2 experience.
This game seems much tougher than the first. But it is not impossible, just hard!
The gameplay is very slick and enjoyable. The obvious improvements on the first game have been made with saves in game easier and equipment changes far simpler to do when you start a mission. There are now so many options on modifying your weapons with stuff you find in the field on deceased alien troops. The squad soldiers seem more 'real' and I get really annoyed when I loose one - which is sadly now a more common occurence.
Don't join my cannonfodder sqaud :-)
8 hours in and 8% of achievements gathered. Plenty of gameplay to go. I suspect my first effort will not be very efficient, but I am learning the game. SImilar enough to the first to start on veteran - but be warned, this is more challenging than XCOM Enemy within...enjoy.
