In Wasteland 3 you take command of a squad of Desert Rangers, lawmen and women in a post-nuclear world, trying to rebuild society from the ashes. More than a century after the bombs fell, you’re fighting a losing battle to keep your beloved Arizona alive. Great game. The spirit of the Wasteland is preserved- no doubts. But it is raw. Very much so. Hundreds of bugs need to be fixed. Battle system and balance has to be ajusted, because now it is more chaotic and less tactical. Has to be vice-versa. In wasteland 2 battles were very balanced and you got clear response from your platoon, but here i am not always sure if given command matches the actions which are happening on the screen. I suppose that after all nescessary patches and fixes will be issued the game will be absolutely fantastic.
I finished both this game and its predecessor and I do appreciate the fixing of the most irritating features W2 had, plus additional streamlining process the game went through. On the surface, it's just a refreshed W2 with additional animations. Underneath that, a lot has changed: combat system, types of damage, perk system on characters, quirks, map construction, reputation system and its impact on the story. And I like all of them. Some things are still there though: mediocre dialogue system, skill "ckecks" (though no save scumming, which is a plus), exploring via running in circles with left shift pressed, occasional stomping over mines because of camera (A LOT less than in W2, which is great) and occasional suicide because you just standed in the explosive range of a barrel and the game didn't inform you about it. Overall, W3 is a significant improvement over W2, with better story and definitely a worse finale. People talking W2 was overall a better game are just irrational. But if you didn't like W2, you're not going to like W3, they're too similar.
What I can't stand about this game is its optimization: my laptop punches way above recommended specs, yet I experienced frame drops into uncomfortable levels, usually when snowing but not only then, sometimes they seem completely random. And I played on the settings the system has auto detected minus motion blur (which I always turn off no matter what), so the system should know what it's doing, right? Wrong. No element of this game should ever consume that many system resources, so I'm guessing poor optimalization, which is both unfortunate and irritating.
I don't really consider this game to be AAA title, but it's good, engaging and, for the most part, a real joy to play. Thus, it definitely deserves 8/10.
Just master peace and those in game songs (especially Battle Hymn of the Republic and The Blood Of The Lamb)… damn how good they fit with gameplay.
Yes it is not so complex like WasteLand 2, sadly fights are kind a easy if you doesn’t play with highest difficulty (was was Phoenix Point). Also that Liberty fight was to long and boring and skills are kind a static (you are able to cover every skill sets what you need with your team)… And I expected a bit more from world map (more point of interest to cover and bit more dynamical way to drive in Colorado), but still… from those kind games I expect story, good graphic, voiceover, humor, feeling and choices what may count in end game and that I got from Wasteland 3.
If you don't play Wasteland 2 before you play this (and see the majority of the content), you won't appreciate why as much as half the game is in here the way it is. I asked someone else who hadn't played W2 first and it seems they completely missed out on so much unlike me :)
Very complex and indepth story around the Patriarch who you work for, a good sign of how well written everything is is the amount of debate it generated but ultimately what's also very well crafted is why the character did everything he did and how he came to me if you pay attention leaving things far less ambiguous for me.
Unlike others here I felt the streamlining of systems here was badly needed and reduces the higher risk and chances of wasting points, ending up with unworkable builds like in W2. The towns and levels are much smaller vs W2 but the graphical quality ends up a lot better. This may sound like you get a lot less game but in practice but in reality my play time was pretty similar for both and this ends up being a welcome relief in terms of streamlining again for backtracking and generally having less filler for everything.
The most impressive thing is just how many choices and outcomes have fleshed out consequences and reactions from other NPC's. Attention to detail is marvelous. My only gripe was that the refugees as a faction seemed quite neglected and underdeveloped in what they could offer and what you could do with them. This is the only thing that seemd like it was obviously cut/ developers ran out of time on.
For the amount of entertainment I got out of this, anything other $30 on sale s practically giving this game away. If you do play through everything to the end, it's well worth the full pricing
Now this game has it's issues, stricktly performance issues but also in game has a problem here and there but it has a great story where your actions matter, good comabt, lots of weapons and armors and upgrades and if i am anything it is a loot horder :D,
----
First problem, the performance issues: the game seems to be poorly optimized with frequent frame drops and stuttering when rotating and panning the camera, this is mostly while in combat, outside of combat is generally smoother.
Graphics setting: High preset (ultra just did not feel as stable as High)
Hardware:
- Ryzen 5 2600X
- Radeon 5700 XT
that being said this is a turn based CRPG so it dose not effect your combat effectiveness just the feel of the game so i don't think this point hurts the game that much.
----
Secound Problem, balance problems like Antiques Appraiser: is it just me or is that perk broken :), i would go out for a few hours, collecting random junk and guns from locations, come back to a vendor and sell all of it and make anywhere between $10,000 to $200,000 resulting in me having more money then i will every need to finish the game buying all all vendors stock of everything, ammo, guns (scrap them for parts), medpacks, deployables, etc..., it is all depending on a roll of the dice for each item but it only needs to work in your favor once and your set for the rest of the game
another thing is the assuslt rifles, they are just useless mid to late game doing next to no damage, they can penetrate there armor well enough but dose no damage so whats the point, had a lot of trouble trying to find any weapon upgrades to transform the rifles to fire or cold damage, seems to be a rare weapon upgrade.
----
Story was really good and i cared about the outcomes of my actions with just a few interactions that i felt where a bit off and just bad writing.
----
Over all i had a lot of fun with this game despite the above problems and can easierly see my self doing more playthroughs
