Following the critically acclaimed 2014 Game of the Year winner Wasteland 2, the RPG series that pioneered the post-apocalyptic genre in video games returns with Wasteland 3.

In Wasteland 3 you take command of a squad of Desert Rangers, lawmen and women in a post-nuclear world, trying to rebuild society from the ashes. More than a century after the bombs fell, you’re fighting a losing battle to keep your beloved Arizona alive. Then the self-proclaimed Patriarch of Colorado radios, promising aid if you'll do a job he can only entrust to an outsider—rescue his land from the ambitions of his three bloodthirsty children.

You’re dispatched on a desperate quest from the scorching deserts to the snowy mountains to start from scratch, building a new base, finding a snow-worthy vehicle, training new recruits, and fighting your way through hostile frozen wastes. All the while, you'll have to decide who to trust in this land torn apart by corruption, intrigue, warring factions, crazed cultists, cutthroat gangs, and bitter sibling rivalries. Build a reputation for yourself by making decisions that will profoundly impact Colorado, its inhabitants and the story you experience. Will you be Colorado’s savior or its worst nightmare?

Wasteland 3 is a squad-based RPG from inXile entertainment, featuring challenging tactical turn-based combat and a deep, reactive story full of twists, turns, and brutal ethical decisions that will keep you hooked whether you’re a Wasteland veteran or new to the series. Create a squad of up to six Rangers and customize them with perks and abilities geared to your playstyle. You even get your own battle truck, which you can upgrade into a hardened war beast, bristling with weapons, to help mow down your enemies.

Improvement in most areas

I greatly enjoyed Wasteland 2 but I have to say that 3 is a step up in nearly every area. Interesting story with some nice choice and consequence and challenging moral decisions. Gameplay is fun and addictive and the music and voice acting is very well done for the most part. Having said that the game is considerably shorter than 2 and kind of lacking in interesting major quest hubs, particularly in the second half of the game. Furthermore, I think the Patriarch's children were a little underwhelming and uninteresting compared to some of the other major players. But, barring a couple of other plot holes and leaps of faith this game is by and large excellent and worth your time. I can see some strong DLC bumping my rating up to a 5 but we'll see.

5 steps forward, 7 paces backward

Pros: More focused story Lively world and characters Nuanced choices Cons: Bugs (Improved since release, but way too many still) Over-reliance on consequences. (There are times when the choices made aren't 'happy-ending', yet believable. Other times, the player gets shafted when better options would've made the experience cooler) This game could've been bigger/deeper. Seems unfinished and incomplete without the DLC. While I am looking forward to WL4, it's been a mixed bag since WL2. I do not understand why this company has such a hard time delivering a game that is not a buggy mess at release, and nails the landing. So much potential, so little consistency stability in production.

Not as good as the predecessors

I absolutely loved the previous two Wasteland games, having only ever played each of the installments for one playthrough I'm going to say my favourite installment was the first one (Remastered). Number three is still a fun game to play but I wasn't as interested in the numerous different goings-on, the world travel was totally out of sync from the rest of the environment, it felt like you are briefly visiting a stormy, chaotic alien planet while you traverse the map, then you pop back in an area and boof! there's sunshine and bonanza, teleported back to planet Earth. The characters and quests were totally goofy, the game actually seriously expects players to engage with total lunatics, cannibals, slavers and degenerates of many sorts - the kind of clientele I typically like to shoot on sight. Everything is fairly streamlined, never did I feel like I was facing an unusual challenge, everything's on track, even on expert difficulty. The main personas of the game are total madness as well, there's this guy you are meant to collaborate with from the start of the game and he expects you to bring back his degenerate offspring alive (lol?) and what you'd much rather do is just shoot him in the face and call it a day. So in a sense the 'game' is actually a bunch of fluff to put around the tactical combat mechanics, character building and progression etc. But if you are able to look past that or don't care much for dialogue, story and different motivations of different characters then the tactical combat experience is quite nice and it's still a fun game in that way. I'm between three and four stars, here's four hoping the next installment is going to be nicer!

micro-review

I was very pleasantly surprised by Wasteland 3 seeing how I didn’t like the second. While not one of the best RPGs out there, it manages to be enjoyable and quite a solid RPG. It really manages to do everything pretty well while also not taking itself entirely seriously. All dialogues have voice lines, and the boss music is very catchy. Some quests are time sensitive, a feature implemented very well. And I enjoyed it’s many QoL features. The biggest criticism that I have is that you are discouraged from using weapon and armor mods because you can’t take them off. And you often depend a lot on finding a high-level weapon through RNG; and then the character that has that weapon becomes by far the most valuable member of the group. At the very least, this was my experience on the highest difficulty level. https://pixelloot.com

Awesome RPG

This game is tons of fun. I first played it on PS4, now I am returning on PC. It's as close to a new Fallout New Vegas as we are going to get. Scotchmo alone is reason enough to buy. Your choices (even doing nothing) will impact the story. Down side, still has bugs months after launch. Also they need to increase the zoom-out of the camera. This can be a problem in some combat situations. With that said I am looking forward to the DLC.
